Positioning in ad hoc networks using double time difference of arrival data fusion method

    No full text
The paper describes a new data fusion method for positioning of mobile users in an ad hoc wireless network. The method relies on a double time difference of data arrival. In difference to the presently used alternatives it does not rely on time synchronization of various nodes of the system. It reduces to solving a nonlinear system of equations, which can be handled using standard procedures. Its validity is demonstrated in an example of a simple ad hoc network

Experiments Utilizing Data Glove and High-Performance INS Devices in an Immersive Virtual Mining Environment

    No full text
The present work concerns immersive virtual reality experiments for the mining industry. The experiments demonstrate efficacy of devices used for teleoperation of mining equipment. The visualisation is carried out using Unity3D 2.5 multiplatform game development tool that communicates with a .Net socket server allowing continuous data feeding from: (a) 5DT Data Glove Ultra that measures finger flexures; (b) MicroStrain 3DM-GX2 high performance orientation sensor that provides information about acceleration and rotational attributes such as pitch, roll and yaw. The user is placed at the focal point of 4-m dome and experiences being part of mining environment. Users also have the ability to navigate and manipulate the fields of view using orientation data and behaviour of the underground mining equipment using six different distinctive hand gestures. In the future, the same techniques can be applied to monitor real mining environments, in which the mining equipment is geo-referenced using the same IMU devices and surrounded by other sensor networks

Performance comparison and analysis of voice communication over ad hoc network

    No full text
Currently, voice traffic (both local and long-distance) is gradually moving from traditional circuit-switched networks to IP-based, packet-switched networks. Another dominant trend is the development of mobile ad hocnetworks technology. In this work, a simulationbased performance analysis of ad hoc routing protocols is presented for establishing VoIP conversation sessions by mobile users in an ad hoc network scenario. The two primary performance metrics (the packet delivery rate and end-to-end delay) for measuring the voice communication are evaluated by varying the routing protocols, number of VoIP conversation sessions and user mobility

    Assessing cognition in mice.

    No full text
Genetically modified mouse models have proven useful to study learning and memory processes and the neurocircuitry and molecular mechanisms involved, as well as to develop therapies for diseases involving cognitive impairment. A variety of tests have been developed to measure cognition in mice, and here we present those established and regularly used in the German Mouse Clinic. The test paradigms have been carefully chosen according to reliability of results and disease relevance of the cognitive functions assessed. Further criteria were time efficiency and ease of application. All tests assess slightly different but also overlapping or interacting aspects of learning and memory so that they can be used to complement each other in a comprehensive assessment of cognitive function. The five protocols described are for spontaneous alternation in the Y-maze, social discrimination, object recognition, automated assessment of learning and memory using the IntelliCage, and olfactory discrimination learning
