Examining Mental Health and Well-being Provision in Schools in Europe: Methodological Approach
Schools are considered an ideal setting for community-based mental health and well-being interventions for young people. However, in spite of extensive literature examining the effectiveness of such interventions, very few studies have investigated existing mental health and well-being provision in schools. The current study aims to extend such previous research by surveying primary and secondary schools to investigate the nature of available provision in nine European countries (Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland, Serbia, Spain, Sweden, the UK and Ukraine). Furthermore, the study aims to investigate potential barriers to mental health and well-being provision and compare provision within and between countries
Failure Probabilities and Tough-Brittle Crossover of Heterogeneous Materials with Continuous Disorder
The failure probabilities or the strength distributions of heterogeneous 1D
systems with continuous local strength distribution and local load sharing have
been studied using a simple, exact, recursive method. The fracture behavior
depends on the local bond-strength distribution, the system size, and the
applied stress, and crossovers occur as system size or stress changes. In the
brittle region, systems with continuous disorders have a failure probability of
the modified-Gumbel form, similar to that for systems with percolation
disorder. The modified-Gumbel form is of special significance in weak-stress
situations. This new recursive method has also been generalized to calculate
exactly the failure probabilities under various boundary conditions, thereby
illustrating the important effect of surfaces in the fracture process.Comment: 9 pages, revtex, 7 figure
Conservative Management of Paediatric Clavicle Fractures
Paediatric clavicle fractures have traditionally been treated nonoperatively. Recent studies have recommended operative management for displaced midshaft fractures. We conducted a retrospective review of all clavicle fractures in children aged one to sixteen over a two-year period. We classified fractures and evaluated followup and clinical outcome. We identified 190 fractures. There were 135 boys and 55 girls. 65% of fractures were displaced and 35% undisplaced. Mean radiographic and clinical followup was 35 days and 44 days, respectively. Clavicle fractures in children heal with nonoperative management. Radiographs of clavicle fractures in children are unnecessary in the absence of clinical symptoms
Natural Aging and Vacancy Trapping in Al-6xxx
Undesirable natural aging (NA) in Al-6xxx delays subsequent artificial aging
(AA) but the size, composition, and evolution of clustering are challenging to
measure. Here, atomistic details of early-stage clustering in Al-1\%Mg-0.6\%Si
during NA are studied computationally using a chemically-accurate
neural-network potential. Feasible growth paths for the preferred
precipitates identify: dominant clusters differing from motifs;
spontaneous vacancy-interstitial formation creating 14-18 solute atom
-like motifs; and lower-energy clusters requiring chemical
re-arrangement to form nuclei. Quasi-on-lattice kinetic Monte Carlo
simulations reveal that 8-14 solute atom clusters form within 1000 s but that
growth slows considerably due to vacancy trapping inside clusters, with
trapping energies of 0.3-0.5 eV. These findings rationalize why cluster growth
and alloy hardness saturate during NA, confirm the concept of ''vacancy
prisons", and suggest why clusters must be dissolved during AA before formation
of . This atomistic understanding of NA may enable design of
strategies to mitigate negative effects of NA
Determining the Surface p\u3cem\u3eK\u3c/em\u3e\u3csub\u3ea\u3c/sub\u3e of Perfluorooctanoic Acid
Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is an environmentally prevalent and persistent organic pollutant with toxic and bioaccumulative properties. Despite the known importance of perfluorinated pollutants in the global environment, molecular-level details of the physicochemical behavior of PFOA on aqueous interfaces remain poorly understood. Here, we utilized two surface-specific techniques, vibrational sum frequency generation spectroscopy (SFG) and surface tensiometry, to investigate the pH-induced structural changes of PFOA and octanoic acid (OA) and determined the apparent pKa at the airâwater surface. The SFG spectra and surface activity model were investigated over a wide range of pHs. With the surface tension measurements, the surface pKa values for OA and PFOA are determined to be 3.8 ± 0.1 and 2.2 ± 0.2, respectively. These results could provide insights into improved remediation of PFOAs and may impact climate modeling of perfluorinated alkyl chain molecules
The Early Development Instrument: an evaluation of its five domains using Rasch analysis
Background: Early childhood development is a multifaceted construct encompassing physical, social, emotional and intellectual competencies. The Early Development Instrument (EDI) is a population-level measure of five domains of early childhood development on which extensive psychometric testing has been conducted using traditional methods. This study builds on previous psychometric analysis by providing the first large-scale Rasch analysis of the EDI. The aim of the study was to perform a definitive analysis of the psychometric properties of the EDI domains within the Rasch paradigm. Methods: Data from a large EDI study conducted in a major Irish urban centre were used for the analysis. The unidimensional Rasch model was used to examine whether the EDI scales met the measurement requirement of invariance, allowing responses to be summated across items. Differential item functioning for gender was also analysed. Results: Data were available for 1344 children. All scales apart from the Physical Health and Well-Being scale reliably discriminated between children of different levels of ability. However, all the scales also had some misfitting items and problems with measuring higher levels of ability. Differential item functioning for gender was particularly evident in the emotional maturity scale with almost one-third of items (9 out of 30) on this scale biased in favour of girls. Conclusion: The study points to a number of areas where the EDI could be improved
Bursts in a fiber bundle model with continuous damage
We study the constitutive behaviour, the damage process, and the properties
of bursts in the continuous damage fiber bundle model introduced recently.
Depending on its two parameters, the model provides various types of
constitutive behaviours including also macroscopic plasticity. Analytic results
are obtained to characterize the damage process along the plastic plateau under
strain controlled loading, furthermore, for stress controlled experiments we
develop a simulation technique and explore numerically the distribution of
bursts of fiber breaks assuming infinite range of interaction. Simulations
revealed that under certain conditions power law distribution of bursts arises
with an exponent significantly different from the mean field exponent 5/2. A
phase diagram of the model characterizing the possible burst distributions is

Polarization Measurements of Arecibo-Sky Pulsars: Faraday Rotations and Emission-Beam Analyses
We present Faraday Rotation Measure (RM) values derived at L- and P-band as
well as some 60 Stokes-parameter profiles, both determined from our
longstanding Arecibo dual-frequency pulsar polarimetry programs. Many of the RM
measurements were carried out toward the inner Galaxy and the Anticenter on
pulsars with no previous determination, while others are re-measurements
intended to confirm or improve the accuracy of existing values.
Stokes-parameter profiles are displayed for the 58 pulsars for which no
meaningful Stokes profile at lower frequency is available and four without a
high frequency pair. This is a population that includes many distant pulsars in
the inner Galaxy. A number of these polarized pulse profiles exhibit clear
interstellar-scattering tails; nonetheless, we have attempted to interpret the
associated emission-beam structures and to provide morphological
classifications and geometrical models where possible
