    The present work is concentrated with the dry turning of AISI 304 Austenitic Stainless Steel (ASS). This paper presents the influence of cutting parameters like cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut on the surface roughness of austenitic stainless steel during dry turning. A plan of experiments based on Taguchi’s technique has been used to acquire the data. An orthogonal array, the signal to noise (S/N) ratio and the analysis of variance (ANOVA) are employed to investigate the cutting characteristics of AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel bars using TiC and TiCN coated tungsten carbide cutting tool. Finally the confirmation tests that have been carried out to compare the predicted values with the experimental values confirm its effectiveness in the analysis of surface roughness

    Spoilage bacteria of Penaeus indicus

    Bacteria isolated from raw (untreated and unprocessed) prawn (Penaeus indicus) stored at 28±2°C, 4°C and-18°C were tested for spoilage potential, namely, production of protease, lipase, amylase, reduction of trimethylamineoxide (TMAO) to trimethylamine (TMA), production of off odours from flesh broth and halo zone around the colony grown on flesh agar. About 63 % of the total isolates tested were potential spoilers. Members of Vibrio, Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter were found to be dominant potential spoilers at all temperatures

    Impact of sea breeze on wind-seas off Goa, West coast of India

    After withdrawal of the Indian Summer Monsoon and until onset of the next monsoon, i.e., roughly during November-May, winds in the coastal regions of India are dominated by sea breeze. It has an impact on the daily cycle of the sea state near the coast. The impact is quite significant when large scale winds are weak. During one such event, 1-15 April 1997, a Datawell directional waverider buoy was deployed in 23 m water depth off Goa, west coast of India. Twenty-minute averaged spectra, collected once every three hours, show that the spectrum of sea-breeze-related 'wind-seas' peaked at 0.23 ±0.05 Hz. These wind-seas were well separated from swells of frequencies less than 0.15 Hz. The TMA spectrum (Bouwset al 1985) matched the observed seas spectra very well when the sea-breeze was active and the fetch corresponding to equilibrium spectrum was found to be 77±43 km during such occasions. We emphasize on the diurnal cycle of sea-breeze-related sea off the coast of Goa and write an equation for the energy of the seas as a function of the local wind

    AbstractThe kinetics and mechanism of Ag(I)-catalyzed oxidation of l-alanine by cerium (IV) in sulfuric acid media have been investigated by titrimetric technique of redox in the temperature range of 298–313K. It is found that the reaction is of first order with respect to Ce(IV) and l-alanine, and it is of a positive fractional order with respect to Ag(I). It is found that the pseudo first order ([l-alanine]≫[Ce(IV)]≫[Ag(I)]) rate constant k′ increases with the increase of[H+]. The major oxidation product of alanine has been identified as acetaldehyde by an 1H NMR and IR spectroscopy. Under the experimental conditions, the kinetically active species has been found to be Ce4+. Under nitrogen atmosphere, the reaction system can initiate the polymerization of acrylonitrile, indicating generation of free radicals. On the basis of the experimental results, a suitable mechanism has been proposed. The rate constants of the rate-determining step together with the activation parameters were evaluated

    Development of MgAl2O4 grain refiner in Al in-situ composite through H3BO3 addition

    Abstract : In the present work, a novel approach has been made for synthesis of in-situ Magnesium Aluminate (MgAl2O4) particles in the Al-4Mg alloy by Boric Acid (H3BO3) precursor addition (1 wt %, 1.5 wt % and 2 wt %) during the casting process. The developed composite has been investigated for its microstructural characteristics and corrosion performance. Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy examination revealed the formation of MgAl2O4 particles in the composite. Potentiodynamic polarization corrosion experiments were performed on the Al-4Mg/H3BO3 composite specimens (1 wt %, 1.5 wt % and 2 wt %) in three different medium (3.5 % Sodium Chloride-NaCl, 1 M Sulphuric Acid-H2SO4 and 1 M Hydrochloric Acid-HCl). Corrosion results showed that Al-4Mg/1.5 wt % H3BO3 composite specimen exhibited better corrosion resistance in 3.5 % NaCl, 1 M H2SO4 and 1 M HCl medium due to the significant grain refinement produced by MgAl2O4 particles. The developed composite with better corrosion properties can be utilized for marine and naval application

    REDESIGN OF HYDRAULIC CIRCUIT TO IMPROVE QUALITY IN HIGH PRESSURE ALUMINUM DIE CASTING MACHINE

    Pressure/velocity remains as main factors in a high pressure die casting machine to produce intricate components from the die. Rejection analysis was carried out in a die casting machine used in producing Aluminum components with a higher rejection rate. Three modifications have been carried out in the basic hydraulic design of the machine to increase the efficiency and in turn reduce the rejection of the components. The three modifications include (i) addition of nitrogen bottle to the system design (ii) Reducing the passage diameter of the Intensifier output (iii) Regeneration of Intensifier output. The first modification resulted with increase in pressure and the second with increase in velocity and finally the third one with optimum increase in both pressure and velocity. This has resulted in the improvement of machine efficiency thereby reducing the overall rejection of the components with intricate design

    The Natural Progression of Gambiense Sleeping Sickness: What Is the Evidence?

    Gambiense human African trypanosomiasis (HAT, sleeping sickness) is widely assumed to be 100% pathogenic and fatal. However, reports to the contrary exist, and human trypano-tolerance has been postulated. Furthermore, there is uncertainty about the actual duration of both stage 1 and stage 2 infection, particularly with respect to how long a patient remains infectious. Understanding such basic parameters of HAT infection is essential for optimising control strategies based on case detection. We considered the potential existence and relevance of human trypano-tolerance, and explored the duration of infectiousness, through a review of published evidence on the natural progression of gambiense HAT in the absence of treatment, and biological considerations. Published reports indicate that most gambiense HAT cases are fatal if untreated. Self-resolving and asymptomatic chronic infections probably constitute a minority if they do indeed exist. Chronic carriage, however, deserves further study, as it could seed renewed epidemics after control programmes cease
