    [From the introduction]: Why do some rituals disappear while others continue to be performed? Why do some persist in a relatively unaltered state while others are radically modified? In an article published in 1978 Monica Wilson drew attention to the scarcity of information on this subject, and proceeded to consider possible reasons for the 'resilience' of certain rituals, such as those accompanying initiation and death, and the 'obliteration' of others, such as those concerning the birth of twins. My concern in this paper is with the persistence and radical modification of a Gcaleka ritual called umhlinzeko or umsindleko, performed in celebration of the return of a migrant worker to his rural home. The earlier form of the ritual (umhlinzeko) is described and this is followed by an outline of the present-day form (umsindleko). The bulk of the paper is taken up with an attempt to explain why the one form gave way to another. In this respect the analysis concentrates on the relationship between the two forms and their socio-economic contexts, and tries to relate the changes in the form and meaning of the ritual to the changing economic and political circumstances affecting the Gcaleka and other Xhosa-speakers

    The second phase of Leading Sheep (2008-2011) aimed to increase the profitability and viability of Queensland wool producers through innovative approaches to extension and technology adoption. It is a partnership between the Department of Employment, Economic Development & Innovation (DEEDI, formerly DPI&F), Australian Wool Innovation (AWI), and AgForce. Leading Sheep supported a regionally specific program model based on four areas of Queensland: South-East (Traprock), Southern Inland (Box/Sandalwood), South-West (Mulga) and, North/Central-West (Mitchell Grass). Each of these regions had a dedicated coordinator, DEEDI extension officer and a regional committee to identify and prioritise issues and then plan, conduct and evaluate events based on these issues

    Xhosa beer drinks and their oratory

    This is a study of 'beer drinks' among Xhosa people living in the Shixini administrative area of Willowvale district, Transkei. Beer drinks are defined as a 'polythetic' class of events distinguishable from other kinds of ceremonies and rituals at which beer may be consumed, and an attempt is made to outline their major characteristics. A detailed description of the way in which beer drinks are conducted is provided in Chapter 3, with emphasis on the symbolism involved in the allocation of beer, space and time, and on the speech events (including formal oratory) that occur. The main theoretical argument is that beer drinks may be regarded as 'cultural performances' in which social reality or 'practice' is dramatised and reflected upon, enabling people to infuse their experience with meaning and to establish guidelines for future action. This is achieved by relating social practice to cultural norms and values, in a dynamic rather than a static manner. It is demonstrated that the symbolism involved in beer drinking is highly sensitive to the real world and adjusts accordingly, which means that 'culture' is continually being reinterpreted. Despite poverty, a degree of landlessness and heavy reliance on migrant labour, Shixini people maintain an ideal of rural selfsufficiency and are able to partly fulfill this ideal, thereby maintaining a degree of independence and resistance to full incorporation into the wider political economy of southern Africa. They achieve this largely by maintaining a strong sense of community and of household interdependence, linked to a sense of Xhosa tradition. It is this aspect of social practice, manifested in a variety of forms - work parties, ploughing companies, rites of passage, and so on - that is dramatised, reflected upon and reinforced at beer drinks. In a definite sense then, beer drinks may be regarded as a response and a way of adapting to apartheid, and this study one of a community under threat

    Bloat in Ruminants: The Cell Rupture Hypothesis

    An alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) cultivar with a low initial rate of digestion (LIRD), AC Grazeland B, was developed to test the hypothesis that the rate of cell rupture was a cause of frothy bloat in cattle or sheep. The amount of cell wall increases and digestibility declines as plants mature. Thus the cell rupture theory also predicts that the bloat potential of alfalfa is related to maturity. This study compared the digestibility of cell walls (NDF) in LIRD cultivars with that of a standard, Beaver, in relation to maturity and bloat incidence. Fresh alfalfa was fed to wethers during two experiments. NDF was greater (P#.05) in Beaver (43.9%) than the less mature LIRD cultivar (41.1%) during Experiment 1. The digestibility of NDF was greater (P#.05) in the LIRD cultivar (48.4%; Beaver = 44.5%) during Experiment 2, when both cultivars were in vegetative stages of development but NDF digestibility was lower (P#.05) when the cultivars had matured to the bud stage (LIRD=37.1%; Beaver=48.4%). Bloat incidence did not differ between cultivars at the same stage of development. The number of bloats declined as the alfalfa matured, an effect which was attributed to the barrier to microbial invasion created by increasing amounts of cell wall and reduced cell wall digestibility. The cell rupture hypothesis of frothy bloat was supported by these results demonstrating that alfalfa maturity plays a key role in bloat etiology

    BACKGROUND: Bacterial cholangitis and cholecystitis are rarely reported, poorly characterized diseases in the dog. OBJECTIVES: To characterize the clinical features of these conditions. ANIMALS: Twentyā€seven clientā€owned dogs with bacterial cholangitis, cholecystitis, or both. METHODS: Multicenter, retrospective cases series of dogs with bacterial cholangitis, cholecystitis, or both, presenting January 2000 to June 2011 to 4 Veterinary Schools in Ireland/United Kingdom. Interrogation of hospital databases identified all cases with the inclusion criteria; histopathologically confirmed cholangitis or cholecystitis and bile culture/cytology results supporting a bacterial etiology. RESULTS: Twentyā€seven dogs met the inclusion criteria with approximately 460 hepatitis cases documented over the same study period. Typical clinical pathology findings were increases in liver enzyme activities (25/26), hyperbilirubinemia (20/26), and an inflammatory leukogram (21/24). Ultrasound findings, although nonspecific, aided decisionā€making in 25/26 cases. The most frequent hepatobiliary bacterial isolates were Escherichia coli (n = 17; 16 cases), Enterococcus spp. (n = 8; 6 cases), and Clostridium spp. (n = 5; 5 cases). Antimicrobial resistance was an important feature of aerobic isolates; 10/16 E. coli isolates resistant to 3 or more antimicrobial classes. Biliary tract rupture complicated nearly one third of cases, associated with significant mortality (4/8). Discharged dogs had a guarded to fair prognosis; 17/18 alive at 2 months, although 5/10 reā€evaluated had persistent liver enzyme elevation 2ā€“12 months later. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Bacterial cholangitis and cholecystitis occur more frequently than suggested by current literature and should be considered in dogs presenting with jaundice and fever, abdominal pain, or an inflammatory leukogram or with ultrasonographic evidence of gallbladder abnormalities

    Reconstructing a model of quintessential inflation

    We present an explicit cosmological model where inflation and dark energy both could arise from the dynamics of the same scalar field. We present our discussion in the framework where the inflaton field Ļ•\phi attains a nearly constant velocity mPāˆ’1āˆ£dĻ•/dNāˆ£ā‰”Ī±+Ī²expā”(Ī²N)m_P^{-1} |d\phi/dN|\equiv \alpha+\beta \exp(\beta N) (where Nā‰”lnā”aN\equiv \ln a is the e-folding time) during inflation. We show that the model with āˆ£Ī±āˆ£<0.25|\alpha|<0.25 and Ī²<0\beta<0 can easily satisfy inflationary constraints, including the spectral index of scalar fluctuations (ns=0.96Ā±0.013n_s=0.96\pm 0.013), tensor-to-scalar ratio (r<0.28r<0.28) and also the bound imposed on Ī©Ļ•\Omega_\phi during the nucleosynthesis epoch (Ī©Ļ•(1MeV)<0.1\Omega_\phi (1 {\rm MeV})<0.1). In our construction, the scalar field potential always scales proportionally to the square of the Hubble expansion rate. One may thereby account for the two vastly different energy scales associated with the Hubble parameters at early and late epochs.     Chasing Brane Inflation in String-Theory

    We investigate the embedding of brane anti-brane inflation into a concrete type IIB string theory compactification with all moduli fixed. Specifically, we are considering a D3-brane, whose position represents the inflaton Ļ•\phi, in a warped conifold throat in the presence of supersymmetrically embedded D7-branes and an anti D3-brane localized at the tip of the warped conifold cone. After presenting the moduli stabilization analysis for a general D7-brane embedding, we concentrate on two explicit models, the Ouyang and the Kuperstein embeddings. We analyze whether the forces, induced by moduli stabilization and acting on the D3-brane, might cancel by fine-tuning such as to leave us with the original Coulomb attraction of the anti D3-brane as the driving force for inflation. For a large class of D7-brane embeddings we obtain a negative result. Cancelations are possible only for very small intervals of Ļ•\phi around an inflection point but not globally. For the most part of its motion the inflaton then feels a steep, non slow-roll potential. We study the inflationary dynamics induced by this potential.Comment: 34 pages, 4 figures.     The rearrangements of protons and neutrons amongst the valence single-particle orbitals during double {\beta} decay of 100Mo have been determined by measuring cross sections in (d,p), (p,d), (3He,{\alpha}) and (3He,d) reactions on 98,100Mo and 100,102Ru targets.
