Secondary succession of overgrazed Pannonian sandy grasslands
We assessed vegetation changes on acidic sandy soils in permanent plots to follow secondary succession
after cessation of intensive goose breeding in E Hungary. We also aimed to estimate the time
required for vegetation regeneration and indicate differences in secondary succession patterns at
different altitudes in sand dunes. Two sites in the low and two in the high parts of the dunes were
chosen and sampled for twelve years. The initial stages are characterized by ruderal communities
dominated by nitrophilous annual weeds. Ruderal vegetation was soon replaced by nutrient-poor
communities dominated by short-lived pioneer dicotyledonous plants and grasses. In the last few
years of the study, coinciding with a rainy period, the low sites were dominated by the perennial
grasses, Poa angustifolia, P. pratensis and Cynodon dactylon. In contrast, in the high sites a less
dense cover of perennials developed. The influence of initial composition on vegetation development
decreased with time and the influence of altitude increased during succession. The altitude of
the site had a significant effect on regeneration. Species richness and Shannon diversity of the high
sites increased during vegetation development and that of the lowsites decreased. Most annuals persisted
in the high sites but became extinct in the low sites. The mean species turnover rate, irrespective
of altitude, decreased during the study
egyaránt szignifikánsan magasabbnak bizonyult a vadkizárt
területen. Az átlagfajszám és az évelők
gyakorisága magasabb, az egyévesek gyakorisága alacsonyabb volt
a vadkizárt területen. Az elkerített
terület gyepszintjének produktivitása és a legtöbb faj
virágzási sikere nőtt. A kizárást követően a természetvédelmi
szempontból értékes fajok szaporodási esélyei növekedtek. A
degradációtűrő gyenge kompetítor
egyéves fajok, és a mérgező Vincetoxicum hirundinaria virágzási
sikere viszont jelentősen csökkent
Tuning of the Thermoelectric Figure of Merit of CHNHMI (M=Pb,Sn) Photovoltaic Perovskites
The hybrid halide perovskites, the very performant compounds in photovoltaic
applications, possess large Seebeck coefficient and low thermal conductivity
making them potentially interesting high figure of merit () materials. For
this purpose one needs to tune the electrical conductivity of these
semiconductors to higher values. We have studied the CHNHMI
(M=Pb,Sn) samples in pristine form showing very low values for both
materials; however, photoinduced doping (in M=Pb) and chemical doping (in M=Sn)
indicate that, by further doping optimization, can be enhanced toward
unity and reach the performance level of the presently most efficient
thermoelectric materials.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures + toc figur
Nanosegregation in Na2C60
There is continuous interest in the nature of alkali metal fullerides containing C(4)(60) and C(2)(60),
because these compounds are believed to be nonmagnetic Mott–Jahn–Teller insulators. This idea
could be verified in the case of A(4)C(60), but Na(2)C(60) is more controversial. By comparing the results
of infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction, we found that Na(2)C(60) is segregated into 3-10 nm
large regions. The two main phases of the material are insulating C(60) and metallic Na(3)C(60). We
found by neutron scattering that the diffusion of sodium ions becomes faster on heating. Above
470 K Na(2)C(60) is homogeneous and we show IR spectroscopic evidence of a Jahn–Teller distorted
C(2)(60) anion
Polimerizáció szén nanoszerkezetekben = Polymerization in carbon nanostructures
Eredményeinket nemzetközi folyóiratokban publikáltuk, ezek közül legfontosabbak két Physical Review B, két Journal of Physical Chemistry C, egy Journal of Applied Physics, egy Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters, egy Nature Communications folyóiratcikk, továbbá hét meghívott előadás nemzetközi konferenciákon. | We investigated three types of carbon nanostructures: fullerenes and fulleride salts, carbon nanotubes and hybrid systems composed of carbon nanotubes and organic molecules. Materials belonging to the first group were studied by temperature- and pressure-dependent vibrational spectroscopy, and determined the relationship between molecular features and macroscopic crystal properties. Such microscopic effects are molecular polimerization reactions (C70), molecular Jahn-Teller distortion (tetraphenylphosphonium-C60), and the combination of electron correlations due to Mott localization and the Jahn-Teller effect (Cs3C60). From the wide-range optical spectra of carbon nanotubes we could determine the electronic structure, and from measuring their infrared spectra with high sensitivity, their vibrational modes. Having studied series of samples with different tube diameter, the dependence of these quantities on the geometry of the tubes could be established. The bonding configuration in carbon nanotube-organic molecule hybrids was determined by infrared and optical spectroscopy as well. Our results were published in international journals, of which the most important are four papers in Physical Review B, two in Journal of Physical Chemistry, one in Science and one in Nature Materials, in addition to seven invited lectures at international conferences
Molekuláris szénszerkezetek optikai spektroszkópiája = Optical spectroscopy of molecular carbon structures
| We investigated the Jahn-Teller distortion in alkali fulleride salts by several methods and showed that the symmetry of the distortion is D3d/D5d in both the alkali fullerides A4C60 (A=K,Rb,Cs) and in the high-temperature phase of Na2C60, and it is realized during continous pseudorotation in a dynamic way. Likewise, we proved that Na2C60 is segregated at room temperature into nanometer size regions of metallic Na3C60 and insulating C60. In rotor-stator systems of fullerenes and cubane, we found spectroscopic proof of the rotation of the fullerene molecules at room temperature, and deducted the structure of the C60-C8H8 polymer from the symmetry analysis of the vibrational spectra. We determined the wide-range optical spectrum of transparent self-supporting nanotube films and calculated the optical constants and transmission windows of several types of nanotubes. From the measurement of photoconductivity and optical absorption on the same nanotube film we concluded that the photoresponse of the tubes is bolometric. We found optical anisotropy in magnetically oriented nanotubes. From the spectra of sidewall-functionalized nanotubes we found the smaller diameter ones to be more reactive. Our results were published in international journals, of which the most important are four papers in Physical Review B, two in Journal of Physical Chemistry, one in Science and one in Nature Materials, in addition to five invited lectures at international conferences
Influence of local fullerene orientation on the electronic properties of A3C60 compounds
We have investigated sodium containing fullerene superconductors Na2AC60, A =
Cs, Rb, and K, by Na-23 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy at 7.5 T
in the temperature range of 10 to 400 K. Despite the structural differences
from the Rb3C60 class of fullerene superconductors, in these compounds the NMR
line of the tetrahedrally coordinated alkali nuclei also splits into two lines
(T and T') at low temperature. In Na2CsC60 the splitting occurs at 170 K; in
the quenched cubic phase of Na2RbC60 and Na2KC60 we observe split lines at 80
K. Detailed investigations of the spectrum, spin-spin and spin-lattice
relaxation as well as spin-echo double resonance (SEDOR) in Na2CsC60 we show
that these two different tetrahedral sites are mixed on a microscopic scale.
The T and T' sites differ in the orientation of first-neighbor C60 molecules.
We present evidence that the orientations of neighboring molecules are
uncorrelated. Thermally activated molecular reorientations cause an exchange
between the T and T' sites and motional narrowing at high temperature. We infer
the same activation energy, 3300 K, in the temperature range 125 to 300 K. The
spin lattice relaxation rate is the same for T and T' down to 125 K but
different below. Both the spin-lattice relaxation rate and Knight shift are
strongly temperature dependent in the whole range investigated. We interpret
this temperature variation by the effect of phonon excitations involving the
rigid librational motion of the C60 molecules. By extending the understanding
of the structure and molecular dynamics of C60 superconductors, these results
may help in clarifying the effects of the structure on the superconducting
properties.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, submitted to PR
Természetben előforduló és mesterséges karotinoidok izolálása, előállítása, szerkezetigazolása = Isolation and structure elucidation of natural and semisynthetic carotenoids
Kereskedelmi szilikagél lúgos kezelésével olyan nagy kapacitású preparatív kromatográfiás állófázist állítottunk elő, amely az igen savérzékeny karotinoid-5,6-epoxidok elválasztására is alkalmas. Ennek segítségével paprikából latoxantint izoláltunk. Karotinoid-glikozidokat állítottunk elő új módszerrel. Ennek lényege, hogy a karotinoidok savak hatására kationokat képeznek, melyek nukleofilekkel 4 ill. 4- helyzetben reagálnak. beta-karotin és izo-zeaxantin savas kezelésével majd perbenzoilezett 1-tioglükóz alkalmazásával változatos tioglikozidokat állítottunk elő jó hozammal. Általános módszert dolgoztunk ki karotinoid-szukcinátokból karotinoid dimerek előállítására. Elvégeztük aromás magot tartalmazó dimerek és trimerek szintézisét aromás karbonsavakból karotinoidokkal, ill. fenolokból és benzil-alkoholokból karotinoid-szukcinátokkal. Az új vegyületek oxidatív stressz gátló hatása jóval meghaladta a referencia karotinoidok aktivitását. Jó hozammal glikozil-észtereket állítottunk elő karotinoid-szukcinátokkal a glikozilos OH-csoport észteresítésével. | Through basic handling of commercially available silica gel a new high-capacity chromatographic stationary phase was produced and used for the separation of acid-labile 5,6-epoxy-carotenoids. With the help of the modified gel latoxanthin was isolated from yellow paprika. A new method was elaborated for the synthesis of carotenoid glycosides. Carotenoids form cations in the their reactions with acids, which readily react with nucleophile at positions 4 and 4- of the end groups. After acidic treatment of beta-carotene and isozeaxanthin the cation obtained was reacted with perbenzoylated 1-thioglucose to give thioglycosides with good yields. A general method was elaborated for the production of carotenoid succinates, and carotenoid homo- and hetero- succinate diesters. Carotenoid dimers and trimers were synthetized from aromatic di- or tricarboxylic acids and from di- or tribenzylic alcohols. These new compounds have been shown higher antiodidant activity in preliminary tests than native carotenoids. Glycosyl esters were synthetised from carotenoid succinates with good yields. Synthesis and biological investigation of PEG-carotenoid conjugates have been started recently. As a continuation of our work on the isolation of natural carotenoids carotenoid composition of petals and berries of some medicinal herbs were determined. Food chemistry studies were made on the carotenoid composition of commercially available plants and their prosessed forms. The role of carotenoids in biological sytems was investigated
