This article addresses the northeastern Brazilian economy—probably the most studied one in
the country—after the extinction of the Superintendency for the Northeastern Development
(SUDENE) in 2000. The colonial and imperial years set the conditions for the “Northeastern
economic complex” to develop. In the twentieth century, the region was integrated into the
national economy, first by a commercial articulation driven by the industrialized southeastern
Brazil. It was afterwards, in the SUDENE years (1960-2000), that the region was productively
integrated to the Brazilian economy. In the fifteen years that followed the extinction of
SUDENE (2000-2015), the region has achieved higher rates of economic growth as compared
to the national average, with a significant improvement in social indicators. Our article thus
aims to understand which elements have influenced such new form of development that,
in the present century, allowed northeastern Brazil to have its inequalities to other regions
of the country, which, although still significant, reduced
