Background: Street sweeping is an increasing popular outdoor occupation in major cities of Nigeria. These workers are chronically exposed to diverse occupational and environmental sources of ocular hazards, that they may not be aware of. This may impair their adoption and compliance with the requisite safety practices. This study was aimed at assessing levels of awareness, knowledge, and practice of ocular safety among street sweepers in Calabar, Southern Nigeria.Materials and Methods: The study was a cross sectional study among one hundred and fifteen (115) street sweepers in Calabar Urban Development Authority, Nigeria over a period of three months. A systematic random sampling method was used to select respondents eligible for the study and a pretested semi-structured interviewer administered questionnaire was used to obtain data. Data obtained was analysed using statistical package for social sciences version 20 (Armonk, NY: IBM Corp.).Results: One hundred and fifteen (115) subjects were studied, with mean age of 41.8 ± 10.4 years, and female to male ratio of 1:0.03. Seventy percent had good knowledge of ocular health safety; while 68% were aware of the occupational hazards associated with the job. Less than a quarter (19%) of workers used personal protective devices (PPD). Only 1% of the total who used PPD wore protective goggles while at work. Conclusion: Good knowledge and a high level of awareness on ocular health safety was seen among street sweepers. However, there was poor utilization of personal protective devices especially protective goggles among the workers which will increase their risk to occupational hazards. Keywords: Ocular health safety, street sweepers, Calaba

Historical Missionary Activity, Schooling, and the Reversal of Fortunes: Evidence from Nigeria

Get PDF
This paper shows that historical missionary activity has had a persistent effect on schooling outcomes, and contributed to a reversal of fortunes wherein historically richer ethnic groups are poorer today. Combining contemporary individual-level data with a newly constructed dataset on mission stations in Nigeria, we find that individuals whose ancestors were exposed to greater missionary activity have higher levels of schooling. This effect is robust to omitted heterogeneity, ethnicity fixed effects, and reverse causation. We find inter-generational factors and the persistence of early advantages in educational infrastructure to be key channels through which the effect has persisted. Consistent with theory, the effect of missions on current schooling is larger for population subgroups that have historically suffered disadvantages in access to education

The effects of wheat and yam flour diets on the toxicity of three botanical extracts to Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) and the underlying biochemical mechanisms

No full text
This study investigates the interactive effects of food type, exposure time, and experimental dosages on the biochemical and insecticidal responses of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) to the toxic effects of three botanicals. The botanicals [Piper guineense (PG), Cinnamomum verum (CV), and Syzygium aromaticum (SA)] were applied individually and in binary combinations (PG + SA, PG + CV, and SA + CV). Beetles were reared for two generations on wheat and yam flour prior to insecticide exposure. The specific activities of α-amylase, alkaline phosphatase (AKP), acid phosphatase (ACP), acetylcholinesterase (AChE), and glutathione S-transferase (GST) were also determined. Generally, the insecticidal and biochemical responses of T. castaneum to each botanical extract and their binary combinations varied with the type of host food used for rearing the beetles, the experimental dosage, and the exposure time to the extracts. The three main factors (i.e. food, time and dosage) and their two-way interactions (F∗D, F∗T and D∗T) significantly (p < 0.05) influenced the mortality response of the beetles. According to the LD50, LD95, and LT50 values, all three botanical extracts were generally more toxic to beetles fed wheat flour than those fed yam flour. Beetles given yam flour showed more toxic effects with the binary mixture of PG + CV and SA + CV than those fed wheat flour. Except for CV + SA, which had a synergistic effect on the mortality response of yam-reared T. castaneum, all the binary mixtures had antagonistic effects on the beetles' mortality rate. Irrespective of food type, significantly higher (p < 0.05) specific activities of α-amylase, AKP, and ACP was recorded in beetles exposed to CV alone and EA + CV combination relative to the control. This study demonstrates the valuable insights needed for the possible development of targeted and sustainable strategies for managing T. castaneum infesting wheat and yam flour

Development of a manual egusi (Citrulus Vulgaris) washing machine

Egusi is an important oil seed plant used in the food industry. However, the washing of egusi seeds after harvest has been a major challenge to the egusi farmers in Nigeria. The washing of egusi seeds after harvest is locally done by the use of basket containing unwashed egusi seeds submerged inside water and washed with hand to remove the slime and dirt which is labour intensive and time consuming. A manual egusi (Citrulus Vulgaris) washing machine was developed to help egusi farmers in washing of egusi seeds after manual pod cracking and seeds scooping. The average length, width, thickness and sphericity of 100 egusi seeds were first determined to be 15 mm, 8.8 mm, 2.06 mm and 0.43 mm and used in the machine design. The machine was designed and fabricated using available materials and it consist of five major components which are; cylindrical drum, perforated drum, roller, water tank and frame with a capacity of 32.14kg/batch. The machine was evaluated to have 75.3% washing efficiency, 0.08% percentage loss, and 0.0% damaged egusi respectively

Theoretical DFT Investigation of Structure and Electronic Properties of η5-Cyclopentadienyl Half-Sandwich Organochalcogenide Complexes

No full text
For the first time, an extensive theoretical comparative study of the electronic structure and spectra of the η5-cyclopentadienyl half-sandwich [(Cp)(EPh3)], E = Se, Te) organochalcogenides was carried out using direct space electronic structure calculations within hybrid, meta, and meta-hybrid DFT GGA functionals coupled with double-ζ polarized 6-31G* and correlation-consistent triple-zeta cc-pVTZ-pp basis sets. The absence of covalent bonding between the cyclopentadienyl (Cp) ligands and Te/Se coordination centers was revealed. It was found that the chalcogens are partially positively charged and Cp ligands are partially negatively charged, which directly indicates a visible ionic contribution to Te/Se-Cp chemical bonding. Simulated UV–Vis absorption spectra show that all complexes have a UV-active nature, with a considerable shift in their visible light absorption due to the addition of methyl groups. The highest occupied molecular orbitals exhibit π-bonding between the Te/Se centers and Cp rings, although the majority of the orbital density is localized inside the Cp π-system. The presence of the chalcogen atoms and the extension of π-bonds across the chalcogen-ligand interface make the species promising for advanced photovoltaic and light-emitting applications

Spin Polarization and Flat Bands in Eu-Doped Nanoporous and Twisted Bilayer Graphenes

No full text
Advanced two-dimensional spin-polarized heterostructures based on twisted (TBG) and nanoporous (NPBG) bilayer graphenes doped with Eu ions were theoretically proposed and studied using Periodic Boundary Conditions Density Functional theory electronic structure calculations. The significant polarization of the electronic states at the Fermi level was discovered for both Eu/NPBG(AA) and Eu/TBG lattices. Eu ions’ chemi- and physisorption to both graphenes may lead to structural deformations, drop of symmetry of low-dimensional lattices, interlayer fusion, and mutual slides of TBG graphene fragments. The frontier bands in the valence region at the vicinity of the Fermi level of both spin-polarized 2D Eu/NPBG(AA) and Eu/TBG lattices clearly demonstrate flat dispersion laws caused by localized electronic states formed by TBG Moiré patterns, which could lead to strong electron correlations and the formation of exotic quantum phases
