    Analysis towards Effective Policing in Nigeria

    Security of life and property is the bedrock of social, economic and political stability of any nation. Man as a unique creature with peculiar and complex nature could be instinctively unpredictable and uncontrollable. And this explains why humans are the major determinant and provider of security in a society. Governments of nations are therefore saddled with the responsibility of internal security through established agencies empowered by law. This duty is distilled into standard policing to enforce law and order in the wake of a secured/safe environment. The standard of policing available to nation determines the level of development of that country. Unfortunately, the Nigeria police has not been able to live up to expectation in providing adequate security to the nation. In carrying out the research, the secondary source of information and data was utilized. The findings reveal that several factors are responsible for police inefficiency and ineffectiveness, which include corruption, poor funding by government and lack of confidence by the general public. The paper recommended some important strategies for effective policing which includes re-orientation of the police, proper training, provision of firearms, motivation and public responsibility

    Cultism: A Destructive Concept in the Educational Development of Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria

    Security threat has for long constituted a major impediment to the smooth academic pursuit in Nigeria. It is an understatement to say that the environment devoid of peace cannot enhance a meaningful learning. The threat to human lives and properties has escalated beyond mere imagination with the spate of violence of all forms including assassination, robbery, theft, burglary and murder. The tertiary institutions in Nigeria have not been left out of this serious threat to the breakdown of law and order. Cultism has become a major social problem in the Nigerian tertiary institutions as its activities and mode of operation are usually shrouded in secrecy and are inimical to the interests of the institutions in particular and the society in general. This unfortunately has to do with the menace of secret cults. Relevant literatures were gathered for this study through secondary source of data. The findings of the study are the lack of the fear of God, lack of parental guidance, god fatherism influence etc. are some hindrance to the eradication of secret cults. It was therefore recommended that the eradication of secret cult demands the total commitment of all the elements of social structure; school, religious institutes, government and the society

    The perception of the contributory pension scheme administration by the staff of University of Benin

    This paper x-ray the perception of the staff of University of Benin on the contributory pension scheme administration. The research instruments used in the data collection were structured questionnaire and face to face interview. A sample size of 250 made up of both the academic and non-academic staff were selected from the total populations of about 5,000 staff. The research findings indicated non-significant relationship between the variable on the hypothesis. They faulted the scheme for lack of transparency and accountability and the life time pension payment as in defined benefit scheme. Based on the finding, appropriate recommendations were made to make the scheme attractive

    An Overview of the Nigerian Contributory Pension Scheme (2004 and 2014 Pension Act)

    The dejection and helplessness of pensioners waiting to be paid pension benefit under very frustrating verification process occasioned by impunity in pension fund administration led to the Pension Act of 2004.  This ushered in the Contributory Pension Scheme that replaced the Defined Benefit Pension Scheme with attendant review in 2014 to check mismanagement. This paper critically examines the contributory pensions scheme; identifies its inadequacies and also highlight the lapses of the old defined Benefit pension scheme.  Information was obtained from secondary source and personal encountered with pensioners.  In course of this study it was discovered that the contributory pension scheme was selectively implemented, not including all the Government Parastatals, there is a wide financial disparity between the old and new pension scheme, absent of life span annuity and also discovered is the current mode of diversion of pension assets.;  This paper recommend the wholestic implementation of the policy by the Government, the financial disparity in the pensioner take home should be bridged up by increased financial involvement by the Government and to fore-stall financial misappropriation, interests and commissions accruable to pension fund asset should be disclosed on regularly.  The Contributory Pension Scheme is a welcome idea which when properly implemented will eradicate the pensioners harsh life thereby making their dream a reality

    The Social-Economic Impediments to Kidnapping Eradication in Southern Nigeria

    Many families had gone through the trauma of being guests of Kidnappers. Apart from paying hefty ransom, many of the victims did not live to tell their stories. Since 2007, Nigeria has witness increased increasingly spate of kidnapping in the South, particularly South-South and South-East geo-political zones. In spite of the security agencies investment in intelligence gathering to get advance information to nip their activities in the bud and also the formation of the various special Task Force on kidnapping, the business still strives. This paper examined the Social-economic factors hindering the abolition of this illicit business in the southern Nigeria. The sources of data is secondary. It was discovered that the menace has been on the increase due to its lucrative nature of the business people pay ransom to get their relative released, and this encourages the crime to thrive, that unemployment, corruption, poverty, leadership failure and loss of societal value are the major obstacle to its eradication. The following recommendations were made: Any political or public office holder caught conniving with kidnappers should be relieved of their position. There should be effective governance that enhances improved standard of living for the people, by providing employment, and ensuring adequate security of lives and properties.Key Words: Kidnapping, values.
