Laboratory study was conducted to characterize the beneficial properties of plant growth-promoting rhizobacterial (PGPR) strains isolated from sweet potato rhizosphere. Fifteen rhizobacterial (PGPR) strains were screened for indole acetic acid (IAA) production with and without addition of the precursor L-tryptophan (L-TRP), phosphate-solubilizing activity, and nitrogen production, antagonistic activity against fungal pathogens, siderophore production and intrinsic antibiotic resistance. Results of the laboratory study showed that 15 rhizobacterial isolates were able to produce indole acetic acid (IAA). The concentration of IAA produced ranged from 3.84 - 13.33mg L-1. Addition of L-tryptophan (L-TRP) to the bacterial isolates increased the production of IAA ranging from 4.94 - 46.66 mg L-1. Six isolates (40%) were able to solubilize insoluble phosphate as evident by production of clear zone on calcium phosphate medium. All isolates were able to grow in N-free media indicating their abilities to produce nitrogen which ranged from 0.74 - 1.32 ppm. Three of the isolates produced fluorescent pigment on agar plate indicated their abilities to produce siderophores. Four isolates were able to inhibit the fungal pathogens Rhizoctonia sp.and Pythium sp. The intrinsic antibiotic test showed that all isolates were resistant against chloramphenicol (10 and 30 µg mL-1), Streptomycin (10 µg mL-1), Kanamycin (5 and 30 µg mL-1), Penicillin (10 µg mL-1) and tetracyclin (30 µg mL-1). The rhizobacterial isolates showed the several beneficial traits that could improve plant growth

This paper presents analyses of the land use and land cover change of the Langat-Dengkil sub-catchment and the deforestation of the Klang-Langat catchment in the context of water resource availability. The Langat-Dengkil sub-catchment lies within the upper catchment of Klang-Langat. For both catchments, the landsat TM and ETM satellite imageries, ERDAS Imagine 8.4 and ArcView/Arc GIS softwares were used to detect spatial and temporal changes in land use and deforestation between the year 1990 and 2001. For Klang-Langat deforestation, CLUE model was used to forecast change up to year 2020 using two set scenarios. Langat-Dengkil sub-catchments experienced multiple changes of land use and land cover at varying quantum for the years 1990 and 2001. It was found that forest land and agriculture were reduced by 9.5% (4,303 ha) and 17.3% (11,598 ha), respectively. During the same period (1990 to 2001), urbanised land has increased by nearly six folds (18,860 ha). Land use change matrix has indicated that the increase of urbanised area was at the expense of agriculture and forest land. For Klang-Langat catchment, the deforestation for 1989 – 1999 were also serious. About 36,351 ha were deforested including 12,244 ha of Permanent Forest Reserve. Deforestation prone areas are located within 1000 m from major access, 2000 m from town, confined to altitude less than 100 m and within slope of less than 5o. Projection for year 2020 has predicted that if the Permanent Forest Reserve is strictly protected, deforestation will be reduced to 22,340 ha or 22%. Otherwise, it will be heavily deforested at 50,851 ha or 50%. Both results showed that the accelerated land use change and deforestation can only be mitigated through stringent management of land conversion, and as for the forest, it has to be through the total protection by law. This can be achieved by strengthening the Permanent Forest Reserve law and the commitment in adopting sustainable resource policy

A pot experiment was conducted to determine the effects of rhizobacterial inoculation on growth and storage root development of Sepang Oren sweetpotato. Inoculation positively affected plant growth. The highest growth was observed on plants inoculated with Klebsiella sp. which increased shoot dry weight by 23% compared to control. Five of the isolates were able to produce sweetpotato storage roots. Klebsiella sp. and Erwinia sp. produced higher storage root yields of 35.15 and 8.22 g plant-1, respectively, compared to the other treatments. The inoculation significantly increased the uptake of nutrients in plant tissue and the concentrations of nutrients in soil. The results suggest that Klebsiella sp. and Erwinia sp. are potentially effective as bioenhancers and biofertilizers for sweetpotato

THE IMPACT OF LEADERSHIP STYLES ON R&D TEAM PERFORMANCE AND THE MEDIATING ROLE OF KNOWLEDGE SHARING

Purpose: This study aims to examine the impact of leadership styles, specifically on transformational leadership and transactional leadership in R&D team performance of researcher in UniversitiTeknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM). Further, this study was to examine the impact of knowledge sharing on R&D team performance as mediating variables. Methodology: The survey method was adopted to carry out the research. A structured Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) was used for data collection. R&D team performance was assessed based on measures of performance. Regression and Correlation statistical techniques were used to analyze the data elicited from one hundred seventy two (172) randomly selected respondents. Main Findings: It was revealed from the study that while transformational leadership style had a positive impact on R&D team performance; transactional leadership style also had a positive impact on R&D team performance. It was also revealed from the study that knowledge sharing have significant and positive relationship with mediate both transformational leadership and transactional leadership on R&D team performance. Implications/Applications: This research shows that R&D teams also can use the full range leadership styles although there are comparisons of uniqueness that exists in the R&D teams with other contexts. This is because leading an R&D team requires the leader to possess certain skills in addition to technical expertise, such as spreading information regarding technical advances, being knowledgeable regarding current professional activities and possessing strategic planning skills in an innovative climate where the team is not permanent or lasts only for a short period of time. This research confirmed that leadership styles led to significant team performance benefits such as an increase achievement of technical objectives, efficiency of resource utilization and other achievements. Novelty/Originality: This study has successfully extended the full leadership literature by conceptualizing how the transformational leadership and transactional leadership styles positively impact the R&D team's performance. Hence, the findings in this study may be beneficial and act as a framework or a limitation for other studies

The results of a live attenuated gdhA derivative P. multocida B:2 vaccine on immunity in buffalo herds is described. Three groups of 30 to 50 buffaloes selected from a haemorrhagic septicaemia-endemic and non-endemic area were used. Thirty percent of animals in each group were given intranasal 5 ml inoculum 106 cfu/mL live attenuated gdhA derivative P. multocida B:2. After exposure, vaccinated buffaloes were mingled with non-vaccinated animals of the same group. A booster dose was given 10 months after the first exposure. Serum samples were randomly collected from 30% of each group before vaccination and at 2-month intervals for 22 months to determine herd immune status by ELISA. Endemic or non-endemic herd status was compared with 15 non-vaccinated controls. Results revealed high herd antibody levels in endemic and non-endemic areas before vaccination. After vaccination, herd antibody levels in both areas gradually increased to peak values by the 6th month and then started to gradually decline until month 10. Following booster dose at 10th month, antibodies declined to levels similar to those in unvaccinated animal at 12 to 14 months. Antibody levels then recovered at 22-months (end of study). It was concluded that field vaccination using gdhA derivative P. multocida B:2 increased herd immunity for 8 to 10 months before a booster dose was required

Impact of mobility models on clustering based routing protocols in mobile WSNs

This paper presents comparison of different hierarchical (position and non-position based) protocols with respect to different mobility models. Previous work mainly focuses on static networks or at most a single mobility model. Using only one mobility model may not predict the behavior of routing protocol accurately. Simulation results show that mobility has large impact on the behavior of WSN routing protocols. Also, position based routing protocols performs better in terms of packet delivery compared to non position based routing protocols
