    Attainable entanglement of unitary transformed thermal states in liquid-state nuclear magnetic resonance with the chemical shift

    Recently, Yu, Brown, and Chuang [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 71}, 032341 (2005)] investigated the entanglement attainable from unitary transformed thermal states in liquid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Their research gave an insight into the role of the entanglement in a liquid-state NMR quantum computer. Moreover, they attempted to reveal the role of mixed-state entanglement in quantum computing. However, they assumed that the Zeeman energy of each nuclear spin which corresponds to a qubit takes a common value for all; there is no chemical shift. In this paper, we research a model with the chemical shifts and analytically derive the physical parameter region where unitary transformed thermal states are entangled, by the positive partial transposition (PPT) criterion with respect to any bipartition. We examine the effect of the chemical shifts on the boundary between the separability and the nonseparability, and find it is negligible.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figures.     Finding Euroscaptor mizura (Mammalia : Insectivora) and Its Nest from under Hebeloma radicosum (Fungi : Agaricales) in Ashiu, Kyoto, with Data of Possible Contiguous Occurrences of Three Talpine Species in This Region

    We examined nests and other traces of moles in Ashiu, Kyoto, beneath fruit bodies of a mushroom species, Hebeloma radicosum, which grows on the underground latrines of small mammals. We also attempted to catch animals at nesting sites which were detected through the fungal fruiting. As a result, an adult specimen of a talpine mole species, Euroscaptor mizura, was collected together with its nest. This is the first record of E. mizura from Ashiu region. Also, this is the first report of the nest of E. mizura, of the mushroom-mole nest association in H. radicosum and E. mizura, and of the capture of a mole at the nesting site under indication of the fungus. Morphological features of the animal and structure of the nest are described. This finding further revealed a contiguousness in the distribution of three talpine species, E. mizura, Mogera wogura and Mogera kobeae in Ashiu

    Seasonal Deposition Fluxes of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Lake Biwa, Japan

    金沢大学大学院自然科学研究科金沢大学環日本海域環境研究センター地球環境計測研究部門北海道大学大学院地球環境科学研究院Seasonal deposition fluxes of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the North Basin of Lake Biwa were investigated by monthly collecting sediment trap samples through a year from July 2003. Average deposition flux of total PAHs was 75 ng cm-2 year-1, similar to those for other rural area. Deposition fluxes of PAHs did varied seasonally. In the vertical mixing period of the lake, late autumn to early spring, the fluxes of less volatile PAHs were enhanced while those for volatile PAHs were not. The size difference of particles associated with volatile and less volatile PAHs caused the seasonal variation of the fluxes. Oil discharge from water delivery equipments may contribute the fluxes of volatile PAHs in summer to autumn. © 2008 Springer Science+Business Media B.V

    Generation of a single-cycle acoustic pulse: a scalable solution for transport in single-electron circuits

    The synthesis of single-cycle, compressed optical and microwave pulses sparked novel areas of fundamental research. In the field of acoustics, however, such a generation has not been introduced yet. For numerous applications, the large spatial extent of surface acoustic waves (SAW) causes unwanted perturbations and limits the accuracy of physical manipulations. Particularly, this restriction applies to SAW-driven quantum experiments with single flying electrons, where extra modulation renders the exact position of the transported electron ambiguous and leads to undesired spin mixing. Here, we address this challenge by demonstrating single-shot chirp synthesis of a strongly compressed acoustic pulse. Employing this solitary SAW pulse to transport a single electron between distant quantum dots with an efficiency exceeding 99%, we show that chirp synthesis is competitive with regular transduction approaches. Performing a time-resolved investigation of the SAW-driven sending process, we outline the potential of the chirped SAW pulse to synchronize single-electron transport from many quantum-dot sources. By superimposing multiple pulses, we further point out the capability of chirp synthesis to generate arbitrary acoustic waveforms tailorable to a variety of (opto)nanomechanical applications. Our results shift the paradigm of compressed pulses to the field of acoustic phonons and pave the way for a SAW-driven platform of single-electron transport that is precise, synchronized, and scalable.Comment: To be published in Physical Review

    Need for Flexible Adjustment of the Treatment Schedule for Aprepitant Administration against Erlotinib-Induced Refractory Pruritus and Skin Rush

    Common dermatological side-effects associated with erlotinib, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI), include pruritus and skin rash, which are mediated by substance P, leading to the occasional discontinuation of cancer treatment. Aprepitant is an antagonist of neurokinin-1 receptor, through which substance P activates the pruritogens. Thus, aprepitant is expected to offer a promising option for the treatment of erlotinib-induced pruritus. However, the appropriate treatment schedule for aprepitant administration is under consideration. Here, we discuss the need for flexible adjustment of the treatment schedule for aprepitant administration against erlotinib-induced refractory pruritus and skin rush. A 71-year-old female smoker presented with stage IV EGFR-mutated lung adenocarcinoma. She was started on erlotinib at 150 mg/day. However, by 28 days, severe pruritus and acneiform skin rush resistant to standard therapies occurred, resulting in the interruption of erlotinib therapy. After recovery, she was restarted on erlotinib at 100 mg/day. However, severe pruritus and skin rush developed again within 2 weeks. Then, we started the first 3-day dose of aprepitant (125 mg on day 1, 80 mg on day 3, and 80 mg on day 5) based on the results of the previous prospective study, which showed the success rate of 100% with at least the second dose of aprepitant. However, the pruritus and skin rush exacerbated again within 4 weeks. Therefore, we started the second 3-day dose of aprepitant, but in vain. At this point, as the patient-centered medicine, bi-weekly schedule of the 3-day dose of aprepitant was considered and, then, adopted. As the results, the pruritus and skin rush remained well-controlled throughout the subsequent treatment with erlotinib

    Identification of an Anti–Integrin αvβ6 Autoantibody in Patients With Ulcerative Colitis

Although involvement of autoimmunity has been suggested in ulcerative colitis, specific autoantigens/antibodies have yet to be elucidated. Methods: Using 23 recombinant integrin proteins, we performed enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays on sera from patients with ulcerative colitis and controls. Integrin expression and IgG binding in the colon tissues of patients with ulcerative colitis and controls were examined using immunofluorescence and coimmunoprecipitation, respectively. The blocking activity of autoantibodies was examined using solid-phase binding and cell adhesion assays. Results: Screening revealed that patients with ulcerative colitis had IgG antibodies against integrin αvβ6. In the training and validation groups, 103 of 112 (92.0%) patients with ulcerative colitis and only 8 of 155 (5.2%) controls had anti–integrin αvβ6 antibodies (P < .001), resulting in a sensitivity of 92.0% and a specificity of 94.8% for diagnosing ulcerative colitis. Anti–integrin αvβ6 antibody titers coincided with ulcerative colitis disease activity, and IgG1 was the major subclass. Patient IgG bound to the integrin αvβ6 expressed on colonic epithelial cells. Moreover, IgG of patients with ulcerative colitis blocked integrin αvβ6–fibronectin binding through an RGD (Arg-Gly-Asp) tripeptide motif and inhibited cell adhesion. Conclusions: A significant majority of patients with ulcerative colitis had autoantibodies against integrin αvβ6, which may serve as a potential diagnostic biomarker with high sensitivity and specificity
