Peregrynacja do Ziemi Świętej – rzecz o motywacji Jana Goryńskiego do odbycia pielgrzymki

    Get PDF
Summary The article discusses the motivation of Jan Goryński to go on pilgrimage to the Holy Land. A 16th century description (preserved until now in a 17th century manuscript) forms a memory of that journey). According to the researchers, in comparison to the other descriptions of that time (by Anzelm Polak, Jan Tarnowski and Mikołaj Krzysztof Radziwiłł “Sierotka” [“Orphan”]), it has an outstandingly memoirs-like nature, according to researchers. In the bibliography concerning the issue of Goryński, there are yet no explanations of the reasons for his decision to go on that journey which was so difficult at those times. Considering the reality of the period when the Pole went on pilgrimage, his motivation might have been: deep faith and will to follow Christ’s steps, intention of penance, thanksgiving or intercession, or increase in his social rank status by being granted the title of the Knight of the Holy Sepulchre. In the text of peregrination, the pilgrim did not directly indicate the reason why he had decided to travel. Until this day, no correspondence which could explain the reasons for realisation of his pilgrimage has been retained. \e discourse first presents biographical facts concerning Goryński, his closest relatives and environment which shaped him. An analysis of this Polish pilgrim’s biography as well as the &'th century description of peregrination may assist in determination of reasons for which he went on this pilgrimage

The civilization-related phenotypes of abnormal fatty tissue distribution: visceral obesity and sarcopoenic obesity

    Get PDF
Obesity is a well-known risk factor of abnormal carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, arterial hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases. This risk increases with abnormal fat distribution with excessive fat accumulation in the abdominal cavity, liver, pancreas, heart, kidneys, blood vessels, and muscles. In this review we present pathogenesis, diagnostic challenges and metabolic consequences of visceral and sarcopoenic obesity — the new phenotypes of fat distribution in human evolution.Obesity is a well-known risk factor of abnormal carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, arterial hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases. Fatal pulmonary complications in an immunodeficient child with chronic active Epstein-Barr virus infection

    Get PDF
Primary Epstein-Barr virus infection in children typically presents as infectious mononucleosis and in immunocompetent individuals severe pneumonitis proves to be a rare complication. Chronic active Epstein-Barr virus infection (CAEBV) is associated with multiple life-threatening conditions, including interstitial lung disease with fibrosis and lymphoid and lymphohistiocytic infiltrations. We report on a pediatric patient in whom CAEBV resulted in severe pneumopathy with a fatal outcome. W pracy przedstawiono przypadek dziecka z CAEBV i powikłaniami płucnymi o śmiertelnym przebiegu

Lesion of the Cerebellar Noradrenergic Innervation Enhances the Harmaline-Induced Tremor in Rats

Abnormal synchronous activation of the glutamatergic olivo-cerebellar pathway has been suggested to be crucial for the harmaline-induced tremor. The cerebellum receives two catecholaminergic pathways: the dopaminergic pathway arising from the ventral tegmental area/substantia nigra pars compacta, and the noradrenergic one from the locus coeruleus. The aim of the present study was to examine a contribution of the cerebellar catecholaminergic innervations to the harmaline-induced tremor in rats. Rats were injected bilaterally into the cerebellar vermis with 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA; 8 μg/0.5 μl) either alone or this treatment was preceded (30 min earlier) by desipramine (15 mg/kg ip). Harmaline was administered to animals in doses of 7.5 or 15 mg/kg ip. Tremor of forelimbs was measured as a number of episodes during a 90-min observation. Rats were killed by decapitation 30 or 120 min after harmaline treatment. The levels of dopamine, noradrenaline, serotonin, and their metabolites were measured by HPLC in the cerebellum, substantia nigra, caudate–putamen, and frontal cortex. 6-OHDA injected alone enhanced the harmaline-induced tremor. Furthermore, it decreased the noradrenaline level by ca. 40–80% in the cerebellum and increased the levels of serotonin and 5-HIAA in the caudate–putamen and frontal cortex in untreated and/or harmaline-treated animals. When 6-OHDA treatment was preceded by desipramine, it decreased dopaminergic transmission in some regions of the cerebellum while inducing its compensatory activation in others. The latter lesion did not markedly influence the tremor induced by harmaline. The present study indicates that noradrenergic innervation of the cerebellum interacts with cerebral serotonergic systems and plays an inhibitory role in the harmaline-induced tremor

The lot of Polish citizens after September 17, 1939 and the circumstances of the formation of the Polish Army in the USSR

    No full text
The events that occurred on September 17 were extremely tragic, especially for Polish civilian population. After the defeat in September, a lot of Polish soldiers retreating to Hungary and Romania were taken captive. The reason behind their sad plight was the fact that, although captives, they were not entitled to prisoner-of-war status. They were grouped in camps built particularly for that purpose. Three of the camps were given a special status and the Polish captives detained there were murdered in spring 1940. After their invasion on the Second Republic of Poland, the Soviets started to consistently implement the previously sketched plan to exterminate the Polish nation. Due to mass arrests and deportations, hundreds of thousands of Poles, including women, children and elderly people, were taken to the wild backwoods regions of the USSR and left without any protection whatsoever. The flower of our nation was forced to hard labour, such as railway construction or deforestation of some Siberian areas. That tragic situation did not change until the summer of 1941, when the London-based Polish government, after long and stormy negotiations, signed an agreement with the Soviet government. By virtue of Sikorski-Majski agreement, masses of Polish citizens were granted amnesty and a Polish army was to be formed in the USSR. After announcement of the amnesty decree, Poles from the furthest recesses of the USSR started their southward journey to meet their “brothers”. Władysław Anders, general and commander of the Polish Army, had to face a number of difficulties in order to provide his soldiers with relatively good living conditions. The army was short of virtually everything, especially as it also gave shelter to civilians, who wanted to escape death. Therefore, it was an army composed of down-at-heel, rugged human skeletons. Thanks to their persistence and the feeling of great injustice, however, they became highly skilled soldiers and the Polish Army in the USSR was exceptionally vital and resilient.

Old age, commonly viewed as “inability, regress, fadedness”, appears as a leitmotiv in sylva’s triptych and Tadeusz Konwicki’s auto comments

Whole Tadeusz Konwicki’s works have been strongly influenced by his own personal experiences. In his work “Kalendarz i klepsydra” one can find the same motives, situations, figures and descriptions of nature. However, one of the most repetitive leitmotive’s in his prose is ageing. In a very surprising way because of the fact that at the same time it is unpredictable and ironic, the author presents this topic in his autobiographical prose — that is in sylva’s triptych consisted of “Kalendarz i klepsydra”, “Wschody i zachody księżyca” and “Nowy Świat i okolice”. It is quite an extraordinary situation taking into consideration the fact that during the publication of the first sylva Konwicki is fifty years old — is it the age when human starts thinking about death. That question will probably be left with no answer. It is highly likely that such way of thinking about death and ageing appeared in his works because of the intensity of the experience he had gained before throughout his half of a century life. Maybe it is some kind of trick to achieve the advantage over the dialogue between an intelligent reader and himself as an author. Ageing in Konwicki’s works is multidimensional — it does not refer only to the physical ageing but also to the process of literary creation. Therefore the main purpose of this article is to collect, describe and categorise the most important topics and motives when Konwicki pretended to be old man.Udostępnienie publikacji Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego finansowane w ramach projektu „Doskonałość naukowa kluczem do doskonałości kształcenia”. Logiczne podstawy nauczania, czyli rozważania o kulturze logicznej i podstawach rzetelnego myślenia

    No full text
W artykule przedstawiam dydaktyczny dorobek Kazimierza Ajdukiewicza.
