The purpose of the study was to ascertain the influence of Facebook and Instagram social networking sites usage on Computer Science students’ academic achievement in tertiary institutions in South East Zone, Nigeria. Two research questions and two null hypotheses tested at 0.05 level of significance guided the study. Correlational research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study consists of (859) eight hundred and fifty nine of 2019/2020 academic session in the five federal universities in South East Zone while (615) six hundred and fifteen third year Computer Science students were using the social networking sites under study. The sample size of 242 respondents was selected using Taro Yamane formula among the social networking sites users and 19%, 21%, 19%, 20% and 22% of respondents were selected proportionately using simple stratified random sampling technique among the social networking sites users from five federal universities in South East Zone. Structured questionnaire and Computer Science Achievement score from the Computer Science Department of the Federal Universities in South East Zone were used for data collection. Computer Science Achievement score from the Computer Science Department of the Federal Universities were not subjected to any other validation and reliability assessment exercise because it is an official valid document domiciled in the Departments and Exams and Records of the federal universities under study. The questionnaire was validated by three lecturers and the internal consistency of the (questionnaire) instrument was determined using Cronbach Alpha coefficient method which yielded an overall reliability estimate of 0.79. Research questions were analyzed using the Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (r) and coefficient of determination (r2) while the hypotheses were tested at the 0.05 level of significance using Simple Linear Regression procedures. The result of the study found out that the usage of Facebook and Instagram social networking sites all recorded positive predictive influence on Computer Science students’ academic achievement. It also revealed that the usage of Facebook does not significantly influence Computer Science students’ academic achievement while Instagram significantly influence Computer Science students’ academic achievement. It was recommended among others that Teachers can adopt new strategies by channeling assignments or discussions on social networking sites like Instagram to help inculcate the habit of using these sites for academic work.Students should be encouraged to utilize social networking sites like Instagram in a manner that will promote their academic achievement positively. They should be encouraged to create educational groups and see how to use that to enhance their academic growth and worth. This study investigated the underlying factors that influence potential TVET teachers' decision to pursue a teaching career in order to recruit more teachers. The motivation of pre-service TVET graduates obtaining a postgraduate diploma in technical education was therefore investigated using the QUAN-QUAL approach to collect quantitative data via a researcher-created, self-administered questionnaire and qualitative data via written essays and narratives using the triangulation mixed method design. Participants were selected from two cohorts (N=78) of students enrolled in the various departments for the Postgraduate Diploma in Technical Education (PGDTE) program of the University of Nigeria. According to the quantitative analysis, excellent role models from previous teachers, the demanding nature of the job role, a willingness to impart relevant knowledge and skills, a willingness to assist financially disadvantaged students in gaining marketable job skills, and the country's presumed demand for TVET teachers were the primary motivators for pre-service teachers. The qualitative analysis found seven (7) themes, three of which were motivational: desire to assist students and community/sharing expertise; personal dream/calling/passion to teach; and the desire to financially aid students who are incapacitated. However, the gender aspect revealed that male and female pre-service TVET teachers showed significant differences in their altruistic and intrinsic impulses. Following that, the two sets of data were compared and investigated. The ramifications of the findings were then examined, as well as their significance in enhancing hiring measures through setting of standards for tech-voc education programs to improve on the status of TVET teachers to attract quality graduates of technical education programs who can teach as TVET teachers before and after completing their programs

Trends in the completeness of birth registration in Nigeria: 2002-2010

Background: Nigeria is a signatory to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which identifies birth registration as a child's right. However, it is unclear how much progress has been made toward attaining universal birth registration in the country. Methods: This paper reports findings from a secondary analysis of data from the 2007 and 2011 UNICEF Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey in Nigeria. Trends in birth registration completeness based on year of birth of children and age at survey were computed, tabulated, and graphed. Results: Birth registration completeness was 31.5Ĺ  and 41.5Ĺ  in 2007 and 2011 respectively. Children had better odds of registration across Nigeria in 2011 than in 2007 (OR 1.79, 95Ĺ  CI 1.59-2.01), except in the North East geopolitical zone (OR 0.76, 95Ĺ  CI 0.55-1.07). Likewise, older children had better odds of registration than those aged less than one year. Female children had worse chances of registration than their male counterparts (OR 0.92, 95Ĺ  CI 0.85-0.99). Conclusions: Birth registration improved in 2011 over 2007 across Nigeria except in the North East region. However, much still needs to be done to achieve universal birth registration. Birth registration appears to still be influenced by the gender and age of the child. Designing and implementing a strategic communication program to educate the population about the processes and benefits of early birth registration may further improve birth registration. Contribution: This paper provides a rigorous assessment of the progress made toward universal birth registration, which has not been previously demonstrated
