    Predicting house damage class using artificial intelligence method

    The unsatisfactory performance of light structures founded on expansive soils subject to seasonal movements is frequently reported since the early 1950\u27s in Australia. Excessive movements have caused damage to numerous structures that have not been adequately designed to accommodate soil volume changes. However, the sole presence of expansive soil is not necessarily the main cause of damage. Other factors such as vegetation, climate factors, types of construction materials and geology type may also contribute. This paper presents a model which predicts the damage class by analyzing combinations of the contributing factors using artificial intelligence methods. This model can help to identify if any serious and urgent repairs are necessary and immediate actions could be initiated without delay

    Data mining techniques for the assessment of factors contributing to the damage of residential houses in Australia

    This paper reports on the preparation and management processes of inconsistent data on damage on residential houses in Victoria, Australia. There are no existing specific and fully relevant databases readily available except for the incomplete paper-based and electronic-based reports. Therefore, the extracting of information from the reports is complicated and time consuming in order to extract and include all the necessary information needed for analysis of damage on residential houses founded on expansive soils. Data mining is adopted to develop a database. Statistical methods and Artificial Intelligence methods are used to quantify the quality of data. The paper concludes that the development of such database could enable BHC to evaluate the usefulness of the reports prepared on the reported damage properties for further analysis

    The association of spinal osteoarthritis with lumbar lordosis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Careful review of published evidence has led to the postulate that the degree of lumbar lordosis may possibly influence the development and progression of spinal osteoarthritis, just as misalignment does in other joints. Spinal degeneration can ensue from the asymmetrical distribution of loads. The resultant lesions lead to a domino- like breakdown of the normal morphology, degenerative instability and deviation from the correct configuration. The aim of this study is to investigate whether a relationship exists between the sagittal alignment of the lumbar spine, as it is expressed by lordosis, and the presence of radiographic osteoarthritis.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>112 female subjects, aged 40-72 years, were examined in the Outpatients Department of the Orthopedics' Clinic, University Hospital of Heraklion, Crete. Lumbar radiographs were examined on two separate occasions, independently, by two of the authors for the presence of osteoarthritis. Lordosis was measured from the top of L<sub>1 </sub>to the bottom of L<sub>5 </sub>as well as from the top of L<sub>1 </sub>to the top of S<sub>1</sub>. Furthermore, the angle between the bottom of L<sub>5 </sub>to the top of S<sub>1</sub>was also measured.</p> <p>Results and discussion</p> <p>49 women were diagnosed with radiographic osteoarthritis of the lumbar spine, while 63 women had no evidence of osteoarthritis and served as controls. The two groups were matched for age and body build, as it is expressed by BMI. No statistically significant differences were found in the lordotic angles between the two groups</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>There is no difference in lordosis between those affected with lumbar spine osteoarthritis and those who are disease free. It appears that osteoarthritis is not associated with the degree of lumbar lordosis.</p

    Geoeconomic variations in epidemiology, ventilation management, and outcomes in invasively ventilated intensive care unit patients without acute respiratory distress syndrome: a pooled analysis of four observational studies

    Background: Geoeconomic variations in epidemiology, the practice of ventilation, and outcome in invasively ventilated intensive care unit (ICU) patients without acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) remain unexplored. In this analysis we aim to address these gaps using individual patient data of four large observational studies. Methods: In this pooled analysis we harmonised individual patient data from the ERICC, LUNG SAFE, PRoVENT, and PRoVENT-iMiC prospective observational studies, which were conducted from June, 2011, to December, 2018, in 534 ICUs in 54 countries. We used the 2016 World Bank classification to define two geoeconomic regions: middle-income countries (MICs) and high-income countries (HICs). ARDS was defined according to the Berlin criteria. Descriptive statistics were used to compare patients in MICs versus HICs. The primary outcome was the use of low tidal volume ventilation (LTVV) for the first 3 days of mechanical ventilation. Secondary outcomes were key ventilation parameters (tidal volume size, positive end-expiratory pressure, fraction of inspired oxygen, peak pressure, plateau pressure, driving pressure, and respiratory rate), patient characteristics, the risk for and actual development of acute respiratory distress syndrome after the first day of ventilation, duration of ventilation, ICU length of stay, and ICU mortality. Findings: Of the 7608 patients included in the original studies, this analysis included 3852 patients without ARDS, of whom 2345 were from MICs and 1507 were from HICs. Patients in MICs were younger, shorter and with a slightly lower body-mass index, more often had diabetes and active cancer, but less often chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and heart failure than patients from HICs. Sequential organ failure assessment scores were similar in MICs and HICs. Use of LTVV in MICs and HICs was comparable (42\ub74% vs 44\ub72%; absolute difference \u20131\ub769 [\u20139\ub758 to 6\ub711] p=0\ub767; data available in 3174 [82%] of 3852 patients). The median applied positive end expiratory pressure was lower in MICs than in HICs (5 [IQR 5\u20138] vs 6 [5\u20138] cm H2O; p=0\ub70011). ICU mortality was higher in MICs than in HICs (30\ub75% vs 19\ub79%; p=0\ub70004; adjusted effect 16\ub741% [95% CI 9\ub752\u201323\ub752]; p&lt;0\ub70001) and was inversely associated with gross domestic product (adjusted odds ratio for a US$10 000 increase per capita 0\ub780 [95% CI 0\ub775\u20130\ub786]; p&lt;0\ub70001). Interpretation: Despite similar disease severity and ventilation management, ICU mortality in patients without ARDS is higher in MICs than in HICs, with a strong association with country-level economic status.     The influence of climate change on Thorthwaite moisture index on the design of light structures

    Significant long term changes in the earth&rsquo;s climate have occurred in the past but recently there has been more severe climate fluctuation than have occurred in the past few centuries. The effect of this climate change on the foundation conditions of roads and low-rise buildings is costing several hundred billion dollars world-wide. A method which tracks this climate change will be of great value for companies and governments. C.W. Thornthwaite (1948) defined the Thornthwaite Moisture Index (TMI) as the first base for his climate classification system and mapping in the United States. There are 3 important factors to predict ground movement: (a) the degree of moisture index change (b) the depth at which this change occurs and (c) the foundation soil type. The water budget model was used by Thornthwaite (1948) to calculate the moisture index. This paper also discusses two typical examples of the use of this model. Originally TMI&rsquo;s were mainly used to map soil moisture conditions for agriculture but soon became a method to predict environmental and pavement foundation changes

    A review of the cost estimation issues in the tender preparation process in construction industry

    Cost estimation process is undertaken to predict the total cost of the project. Studies indicate that one of the construction company failures in contracting is because of the uncertain, incorrect, and unrealistic cost estimation. Cost estimation process are heavily influenced by the complexity of the project, scale and scope of construction, market conditions, method of construction, site constraints, client&rsquo;s financial position, buildability and the location of the project. However, there are other combinations factors that have not been studied thus far. Hence, this paper focuses on the review of other researchers&rsquo; findings in relation to cost estimation issues in the construction industry. Among the findings, it has been revealed that the cost estimation issues are related to accuracy, human factors, practical knowledge and insufficient cost data/information. The aim of this paper is to investigate these factors and determining other potential factors that may influence cost estimation process in the construction industry.<br /

    Towards integration of BIM into construction management curriculum learning activities

    The utilization of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) by the construction industry and transformations in work practices, such as implementation of Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), have proven to increase construction productivity and efficiency in the delivery of building projects. The education of the construction professionals has now instigated the use of highly collaborative teaching methods reinforced by extreme utilization of ICT to increase the efficiency of information distribution and knowledge development.Building Information Modeling (BIM) methodology, which integrates advanced ICT with stakeholders&rsquo; collaboration, has emerged as one of the most effective project development and delivery methods currently available within the AEC industry. Increasingly, construction managers become involved in BIM methodology due to its capabilities of simulating and assisting the project management processes. The technology portion of the BIM methodology integrates software usage with design, analytical and simulation capabilities to produce interoperable information outputs for productive use by project stakeholders. The collaboration instigated by the BIM methodology enables integration of modeling information and stakeholder ideas in order to produce a Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) platform.This paper introduces learning methodology based on BIM concept and IPD philosophy in regards to its higher education application within the construction project management discipline. The usage of the Learning Management System (LMS) utilized as the learning dissemination platform was compared between comparable learning units to evaluate the contribution of BIM methodology to effectiveness of the learning processes and its impacts on expected outcomes.     Top3 Processes Recombination Intermediates and Modulates Checkpoint Activity after DNA Damage

    Mutation of TOP3 in Saccharomyces cerevisiae causes poor growth, hyperrecombination, and a failure to fully activate DNA damage checkpoints in S phase. Here, we report that overexpression of a dominant-negative allele of TOP3, TOP3(Y356F), which lacks the catalytic (decatenation) activity of Top3, causes impaired S-phase progression and the persistence of abnormal DNA structures (X-shaped DNA molecules) after exposure to methylmethanesulfonate. The impaired S-phase progression is due to a persistent checkpoint-mediated cell cycle delay and can be overridden by addition of caffeine. Hence, the catalytic activity of Top3 is not required for DNA damage checkpoint activation, but it is required for normal S-phase progression after DNA damage. We also present evidence that the checkpoint-mediated cell cycle delay and persistence of X-shaped DNA molecules resulting from overexpression of TOP3(Y356F) are downstream of Rad51 function. We propose that Top3 functions in S phase to both process homologous recombination intermediates and modulate checkpoint activity
