Induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells possess pluripotency and self-renewal ability. Therefore, iPS cells are expected to be useful in regenerative medicine. However, iPS cells form malignant immature teratomas after transplantation into animals, even after differentiation induction. It has been suggested that undifferentiated cells expressing Nanog that remain after differentiation induction are responsible for teratoma formation. Various methods of removing these undifferentiated cells have therefore been investigated, but few methods involve morphological approaches, which may induce less cell damage. In addition, for cells derived from iPS cells to be applied in regenerative medicine, they must be alive. However, detailed morphological analysis of live undifferentiated cells has not been performed. For the above reasons, we assessed the morphological features of live undifferentiated cells remaining after differentiation induction as a basic investigation into the clinical application of iPS cells. As a result, live undifferentiated cells remaining after differentiation induction exhibited a round or oval cytoplasm about 12 μm in diameter and a nucleus. They exhibited nucleo-cytoplasmic (N/C) ratio of about 60% and eccentric nuclei, and they possessed partially granule-like structures in the cytoplasm and prominent nucleoli. Although they were similar to iPS cells, they were smaller than live iPS cells. Furthermore, very small cells were present among undifferentiated cells after differentiation induction. These results suggest that the removal of undifferentiated cells may be possible using the morphological features of live iPS cells and undifferentiated cells after differentiation induction. In addition, this study supports safe regenerative medicine using iPS cells.九州保健福祉大学平成29年

Development of a Simple Device for Functional Reach Test(FRT)

We devised a simple FRT scale for fall prevention combined with a height measure. This advantage of this scale is that it includes a target point which can be pushed forward with the upper limbs to a distance which is measured numerically. The measuring position can be adjusted to the height of the user\u27s shoulders

We conducted field research on Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) in Malaysia from 4th March2002 to 3rd April. The purpose of this study was to clarify issues on CBR which are implemented by theMinistry of Social Welfare, the Ministry of Health and non-governmental organizations.A nationwide increase has been observed in the number of PDK centers. However, the centres\u27 activities aretargeted at children with mental retardation, and the content is mainly to do with functional training andeducation of individuals. The social approach is insufficient. According to the Ministry of Health, the activitiesof CBR are early detection and intervention for children with disability. From the point of view of the nongovernmentalorganizations, it is important to empower people with disability through a social approach. The tripartite cooperation of the Ministry of Social Welfare, the Ministry of Health and non-governmentorganizations would be needed in order to progress CBR in Malaysia

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether often used hypnotics are safe or not to elderlypeople by evaluating the early morning effects and residual effects on the physical and cognitivefunctions after hypnotic administration.Fourteen healthy elders (3 male, 11 female ; mean age 64 years) took part in the study. Triazolam0.125 mg, rilmazafone hydrochloride 1 mg or placebo was orally given to each subjectbefore going to bed (11 pm). Objective evaluations including 1. Total Sway Path test (openedand closed eye) 2. Functional Reach test 3. Timed Up and Go test 4. Simply DiscriminatoryReaction test 5. Critical Flicker Fusion test 6. Short-Term Memory test were done at 10 pm(an hour before subjects went to bed), 4 am, 6 am, 10 am and 2 pm.Among all evaluations for the physical and cognitive functions, main effects between medicineswere only seen in the Total Sway Path test, which is the indicator for static balance ability. Wheneyes were opened, trembling was significantly small in the rilmazafon group compared to the placebogroup (p=0.04).In this study, the hypnotics did not affect physical and cognitive functions for healthy elders. Furtherstudies using an interdisciplinary approach with different professionals such nurses, physicaltherapists, pharmacists and physicians are needed for evaluating the safety use of hypnotics in theelderly patients with insomnia
