Development of a Multifunctional Lightweight Membrane with a High Specific Power Generation Capacity

    Get PDF
As a lighter power generation system, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and Sakase Adtech Corp. are developing a demonstrator component named “Harvesting Energy with Lightweight Integrated Origami Structure” (HELIOS), which is a deployable lightweight membrane structure. HELIOS has solar arrays on its surface and demonstrates the technology which enables higher specific power generation capacity compared to the conventional solar array panels. The membrane also has communication antennas, showing the potency of lightweight membrane’s multifunctionality such as large data transmitting by 5G antennas and high-resolution observation by interferometer antennas. This paper presents the component’s concept and design, and the expected achievements

    Linked Color Imaging for Stomach

Image-enhanced endoscopy (IEE) plays an important role in the detection and further examination of gastritis and early gastric cancer (EGC). Linked color imaging (LCI) is also useful for detecting and evaluating gastritis, gastric intestinal metaplasia as a pre-cancerous lesion, and EGC. LCI provides a clear excellent endoscopic view of the atrophic border and the demarcation line under various conditions of gastritis. We could recognize gastritis as the lesions of the diffuse redness to purple color area with LCI. On the other hand, EGCs are recognized as the lesions of the orange-red, orange, or orange-white color area in the lesion of the purple color area, which is the surround atrophic mucosa with LCI. With further prospective randomized studies, we will be able to evaluate the diagnosis ability for EGC by IEE, and it will be necessary to evaluate the role of WLI/IEE and the additional effects of the diagnostic ability by adding IEE to WLI in future

Piecewise Straight Fold is proposed for large solar sail membranes to simultaneously realize the high packaging efficiency and the simple folding. The fold pattern is based on Spiral Fold to reduce the deviation of the fold line, which improve the packaging efficiency. In addition, the fold pattern consists of piecewise straight fold lines, which approximate the Spiral Fold line, in order to simplify the folding. A simple manufacturing process of Piecewise Straight Fold is developed based on the Z-fold membrane. The preliminary experimental results show the feasibility of the Piecewise Straight Fold and its simple manufacturing process, where the high packaging efficiency is also verified. The wrapping fold experiments for the solar power sail membrane is demonstrated by using the Piecewise Straight Fold. In the wrapping fold experiments, the applicability of the Piecewise Straight Fold to the solar power sail membrane is verified
