    Italian networking of public experimental sites working on Organic Farming: an experience of networking in research

    Research in organic farming, especially with an agro-ecological approach, is strictly linked to local conditions and interactions among several variables. The paper will present an example of a process developed in the Italian context to integrate and harmonize research in organic farming from different research stations, with different local conditions. Collecting similar and comparable data from different research stations participating in the network can have an interesting impact in results of organic farming experiments, due to high number and variability of data. ARSIA Toscana, with the aim of creating an Italian National Network of public experimental stations working in organic farming, involved FIRAB as a facilitator of the participatory process. The proposed process follows two parallel paths: individual questionnaire to single experimental sites to know the specific activities in place on organic farming and a series of meetings with direct involvement and exchange among researchers and policy makers from different regions to comment results of the questionnaire and future development of organic research in public experimental stations. The main outcome of the process has been the choice of a specific transversal topic to build the network: the development of synthetic agro-environmental indicators

    Reflectivity measurements in uniaxial superconductors: a methodological discussion applied to the case of La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4)

    Most of the novel superconductors are uniaxial crystals, with metallic planes (abab) orthogonal to an insulating axis (cc). Far-infrared measurements of the reflectivity Rab(ω)R_{ab} (\omega) provide valuable information on their low-energy electrodynamics, but involve delicate experimental issues. Two of them are a possible contamination of Rab(ω)R_{ab} (\omega) from the c axis and the extrapolation of the RabR_{ab} data to ω\omega =0, both above and below TcT_c. Here we discuss quantitatively these issues with particular regard to La2−x_{2-x}Srx_xCuO4+y_{4+y}, one of the most studied high-TcT_c materials.Comment: 13 pages with 3 Fig

    By using new and previous measurements of the abab-plane conductivity σ1ab(ω,T)\sigma_1^{ab} (\omega,T) of La2−x_{2-x}Srx_xCuO4_{4} (LSCO) it is shown that the spectral weight W=∫0Ωσ1ab(ω,T)dωW = \int_0^\Omega {\sigma_1^{ab} (\omega,T) d\omega} obeys the same law W=W0−B(Ω)T2W = W_0 - B(\Omega) T^2 which holds for a conventional metal like gold, for Ω\Omega's below the plasma frequency. However B(Ω)B(\Omega), which measures the "thermal response" of the charge system, in LSCO exhibits a peculiar behavior which points towards correlation effects. In terms of hopping models, B(Ω)B(\Omega) is directly related to an energy scale tTt_T, smaller by one order of magnitude than the full bandwidth t0∼W0t_0 \sim W_0.Comment: 4 pages with 3 fig

    El Roque de Los Muchachos Site Characteristics. II. Analysis of Wind, Relative Humidity and Air Pressure

    In this paper we present an analysis of wind speed, wind direction, relative humidity and air pressure taken at TNG, CAMC and NOT at Observatorio del Roque de Los Muchachos, in the Canary Islands. Data are compared in order to check local variations and both long term and short term trends of the microclimate. Furthermore, influence of wind speed on the astronomical seeing is estimated to the aim to better understand the influence of wide scale parameters on local meteorological data. The three telescopes show different prevailing wind direction, wind speed, relative humidity and air pressure confirming differences in local microclimate. We found that seeing deteriorates when wind speed is lower than 3.3 m/s. Comparison in terms of wind speed and high relative humidity (> 90%) shows that TNG seems to have optimal observational conditions with respect to CAMC and NOT. Air pressure analysis shows that ORM is dominated by high pressure. Short time variations of pressure anticipate temperature variations tipically by 2-3 hours, this property vanishes in time scales higher than some hours and disappear in longer time scales.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in PAS

    Temperature dependence of the optical spectral weight in the cuprates: Role of electron correlations

    We compare calculations based on the Dynamical Mean-Field Theory of the Hubbard model with the infrared spectral weight W(Ω,T)W(\Omega,T) of La2−x_{2-x}Srx_xCuO4_4 and other cuprates. Without using fitting parameters we show that most of the anomalies found in W(Ω,T)W(\Omega,T) with respect to normal metals, including the existence of two different energy scales for the doping- and the TT-dependence of W(Ω,T)W(\Omega,T), can be ascribed to strong correlation effects.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures.     Effects of Superconductivity and Charge Order on the sub-Terahertz reflectivity of La1.875_{1.875}Ba0.125−y_{0.125-y}Sry_{y}CuO4_4

    The reflectivity R(ω)R (\omega) of both the abab plane and the c axis of two single crystals of La1.875_{1.875}Ba0.125−y_{0.125-y}Sry_{y}CuO4_4 has been measured down to 5 cm−1^{-1}, using coherent synchrotron radiation below 30 cm−1^{-1}. For yy = 0.085, a Josephson Plasma Resonance is detected at T≪TcT \ll T_c = 31 K in Rc(ω)R_{c} (\omega), and a far-infrared peak (FIP) appears in the optical conductivity below 50 K, where non-static charge ordering (CO) is reported by X-ray scattering. For yy = 0.05 (TcT_c = 10 K), a FIP is observed in the low-temperature tetragonal phase below the ordering temperature TCOT_{CO}. At 1/8 doping the peak frequency scales linearly with TCOT_{CO}, confirming that the FIP is an infrared signature of CO, either static or fluctuating.Comment: v2: longer version, 9 pages, 6 color figure

    Chiral spin currents and spectroscopically accessible single merons in quantum dots

    We provide unambiguous theoretical evidence for the formation of correlation-induced isolated merons in rotationally-symmetric quantum dots. Our calculations rely on neither the lowest-Landau-level approximation, nor on the maximum-density-droplet approximation, nor on the existence of a spin-polarized state. For experimentally accessible system parameters, unbound merons condense in the ground state at magnetic fields as low as B∗=0.2B^* = 0.2 T and for as few as N = 3 confined fermions. The four-fold degenerate ground-state at B∗B^* corresponds to four orthogonal merons ∣QC⟩\ket{QC} characterized by their topological chirality CC and charge QQ. This degeneracy is lifted by the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction, which we include perturbatively, yielding spectroscopic accessibility to individual merons. We further derive a closed-form expression for the topological chirality in the form of a chiral spin current and use it to both characterize our states and predict the existence of other topological textures in other regions of phase space, for example, at N=5. Finally, we compare the spin textures of our numerically exact meron states to ansatz wave-functions of merons in quantum Hall droplets and find that the ansatz qualitatively describes the meron states.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures; minor title change, typos fixe
