    NMFS / Interagency Working Group Evaluation of CITES Criteria and Guidelines.

    EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: At present, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) criteria used to assess whether a population qualifies for inclusion in the CITES Appendices relate to (A) size of the population, (B) area of distribution of the population, and (C) declines in the size of the population. Numeric guidelines are provided as indicators of a small population (less than 5,000 individuals), a small subpopulation (less than 500 individuals), a restricted area of distribution for a population (less than 10,000 km2), a restricted area of distribution for a subpopula-tion (less than 500 km2), a high rate of decline (a decrease of 50% or more in total within 5 years or two generations whichever is longer or, for a small wild population, a decline of 20% or more in total within ten years or three generations whichever is longer), large fluctuations (population size or area of distribution varies widely, rapidly and frequently, with a variation greater than one order of magnitude), and a short-term fluctuation (one of two years or less). The Working Group discussed several broad issues of relevance to the CITES criteria and guidelines. These included the importance of the historical extent of decline versus the recent rate of decline; the utility and validity of incorporating relative population productivity into decline criteria; the utility of absolute numbers for defining small populations or small areas; the appropriateness of generation times as time frames for examining declines; the importance of the magnitude and frequency of fluctuations as factors affecting risk of extinction; and the overall utility of numeric thresh-olds or guidelines

    Lithium dihydropyridine dehydrogenation catalysis : a group 1 approach to cyclisation of diamine-boranes

    In reactions restricted previously to a ruthenium catalyst, a 1-lithium-2-alkyl-1,2-dihydropyridine complex is shown to be a competitive alternative dehydrogenation catalyst for the transformation of diamine boranes to cyclic 1,3,2-diazaborolidines, which can in turn be smoothly arylated in good yields. This study establishes the conditions and solvent dependence of the catalysis via NMR monitoring, with mechanistic insight provided by NMR (including DOSY) experiments and X-ray crystallographic studies of several model lithio intermediates

    The Impact of Footwear on Occupational Task Performance and Musculoskeletal Injury Risk: A Scoping Review to Inform Tactical Footwear

    The aim of this scoping review was to investigate the impact of footwear on worker physical task performance and injury risk. The review was guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews protocol and registered in the Open Science Framework. Key search terms were entered into five academic databases. Following a dedicated screening process and critical appraisal, data from the final articles informing this review were extracted, tabulated, and synthesised. Of 19,614 identified articles, 50 articles informed this review. Representing 16 countries, the most common populations investigated were military and firefighter populations, but a wide range of general occupations (e.g., shipping, mining, hairdressing, and healthcare workers) were represented. Footwear types included work safety boots/shoes (e.g., industrial, gumboots, steel capped, etc.), military and firefighter boots, sports shoes (trainers, tennis, basketball, etc.) and various other types (e.g., sandals, etc.). Occupational footwear was found to impact gait and angular velocities, joint ranges of motion, posture and balance, physiological measures (like aerobic capacity, heart rates, temperatures, etc.), muscle activity, and selected occupational tasks. Occupational footwear associated with injuries included boots, conventional running shoes, shoes with inserts, harder/stiffer outsoles or thin soles, and shoes with low comfort scores—although the findings were mixed. Occupational footwear was also linked to potentially causing injuries directly (e.g., musculoskeletal injuries) as well as leading to mechanisms associated with causing injuries (like tripping and slipping)

    Anxious/depressed symptoms are related to microstructural maturation of white matter in typically developing youths

    AbstractThere are multiple recent reports of an association between anxious/depressed (A/D) symptomatology and the rate of cerebral cortical thickness maturation in typically developing youths. We investigated the degree to which anxious/depressed symptoms are tied to age-related microstructural changes in cerebral fiber pathways. The participants were part of the NIH MRI Study of Normal Brain Development. Child Behavior Checklist A/D scores and diffusion imaging were available for 175 youths (84 males, 91 females; 241 magnetic resonance imagings) at up to three visits. The participants ranged from 5.7 to 18.4 years of age at the time of the scan. Alignment of fractional anisotropy data was implemented using FSL/Tract-Based Spatial Statistics, and linear mixed model regression was carried out using SPSS. Child Behavior Checklist A/D was associated with the rate of microstructural development in several white matter pathways, including the bilateral anterior thalamic radiation, bilateral inferior longitudinal fasciculus, left superior longitudinal fasciculus, and right cingulum. Across these pathways, greater age-related fractional anisotropy increases were observed at lower levels of A/D. The results suggest that subclinical A/D symptoms are associated with the rate of microstructural development within several white matter pathways that have been implicated in affect regulation, as well as mood and anxiety psychopathology.</jats:p

    Accessible heavier s-block dihydropyridines : structural elucidation and reactivity of isolable molecular hydride sources

    The straightforward metathesis of 1-lithio-2-tbutyl-1,2-dihydropyridine using metal tert-butoxide (Na/K) has resulted in the first preparation and isolation of a series of heavier alkali metal dihydropyridines. By employing donors, TMEDA, PMDETA and THF, five new metallodihydropyridine compounds were isolated and fully characterised. Three distinct structural motifs have been observed; a dimer, a dimer of dimers and a novel polymeric dihydropyridylpotassium compound, and the influence of cation π-interactions therein has been discussed. Thermal volatility analysis has shown that these complexes have the potential to be used as simple isolable sodium or potassium hydride surrogates, which is confirmed in test reactions with benzophenone

    Radiographic Prevalence of Osteoarthritis of the Scaphotrapeziotrapezoid Joint in Patients With Carpometacarpal Osteoarthritis of the Thumb: A Retrospective Case Series

    Background: In planning operative treatment of thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) joint osteoarthritis, surgeons should consider the presence of an arthritic scaphotrapeziotrapezoid (STT) joint. We aimed to determine the radiographic prevalence of concomitant (STT) osteoarthritis with thumb CMC osteoarthritis in patients who underwent surgical treatment at our institution. We hypothesized that the prevalence of concomitant arthritis at these 2 joints (STT and CMC) would be lower than previously reported. Methods: Between September 2005 and July 2012, a total of 417 patients were identified from our institution using the Current Procedural Terminology code for thumb CMC joint arthroplasty (25447). After applying exclusion criteria and identifying patients who underwent treatment, a total of 194 patients were included and 218 preoperative radiographs were available for review. Each radiograph was categorized according to the Eaton classification of thumb CMC osteoarthritis, with stage 4 involving the (STT) joint. Evaluation was performed by four reviewers independently. Results: A total of 47 (21.6%) patients had varying degrees of concomitant (STT) joint osteoarthritis with the thumb CMC joint osteoarthritis. Stage 4 was reported in 6.4% (14) of the radiographs. Conclusions: The radiographic prevalence of concomitant (STT) osteoarthritis with thumb CMC osteoarthritis may be lower than previously reported. Further studies that include a similarly large sample size and additional radiographic views can help evaluate the likelihood of these conditions in patients who elect to undergo surgical treatment of thumb CMC osteoarthritis

    Spectropolarimetry of FIRST BAL QSOs

    We present Keck spectropolarimetry of two rare low-ionization broad absorption line (BAL) QSOs, FIRST J084044.5+363328 and FIRST J155633.8+351758, that also exhibit narrow absorption lines from metastable excited levels of Fe II (``Iron Lo-BALs''). These QSOs were discovered in optical follow-ups to a deep radio survey; FIRST J155633.8+351758 is radio-loud, the first BAL QSO so identified. FIRST J084044.5+363328 is highly polarized and exhibits many features found in other BAL QSOs, and the polarization and its position angle vary in a complicated manner across the metastable Fe II absorption lines, suggesting that more than one mechanism is at work, or that the system geometry is complex. FIRST J155633.8+351758 may be the most highly polarized BAL QSO known, and exhibits other unusual polarization properties compared to other highly polarized BAL QSOs. Currently available data cannot yet discriminate among the possible lines of sight to BAL QSOs (edge-on, pole-on, or random).Comment: 14 pages, 1 table, 2 figures. To appear in ApJ Letter

    Spectropolarimetry of 3CR 68.1: A Highly Inclined Quasar

    We present Keck spectropolarimetry of the highly polarized radio-loud quasar 3CR 68.1 (z=1.228, V=19). The polarization increases from 5 in the red (4000 A rest-frame) to >10% in the blue (1900 A rest-frame). The broad emission lines are polarized the same as the continuum, which shows that 3CR 68.1 is not a blazar as it has sometimes been regarded in the past. We also present measurements of the emission lines and a strong, blueshifted, associated absorption line system, as well as a detection at the emission-line redshift of Ca II K absorption, presumably from stars in the host galaxy. 3CR 68.1 belongs to an observationally rare class of highly polarized quasars that are neither blazars nor partially obscured radio-quiet QSOs. Taking into account 3CR 68.1's other unusual properties, such as its extremely red spectral energy distribution and its extreme lobe dominance, we explain our spectropolarimetric results in terms of unified models. We argue that we have a dusty, highly inclined view of 3CR 68.1, with reddened scattered (polarized) quasar light diluted by even more dust-reddened quasar light reaching us directly from the nucleus.Comment: 20 pages, includes 3 tables, 6 figures.
