El complejo Erythroxylum macrophyllum (Erythroxylaceae): delimitación taxonómica y posición filogenética

El complejo Erythroxylum macrophyllum (Erythroxylaceae) es un grupo de difícil delimitación taxonómica dada su amplia distribución y variación morfológica. Con el fin de poner a prueba la validez de las especies incluidas actualmente en este complejo, se llevó a cabo un análisis de agregación de poblaciones (AAP) y para explorar la posición filogenética del complejo se realizó un análisis cladístico con base en caracteres morfológicos y anatómicos. Se pudieron discriminar cuatro especies del complejo: E. macrophyllum, E. savannarum stat. nov. (considerada previamente como una variedad de E. macrophyllum) y dos especies nuevas, una de Bolivia-Brasil, y otra de Colombia-Panamá, las cuales se describen e ilustran. El análisis cladístico aporta evidencia según la cual ni el complejo E. macrophyllum, ni la sección Macrocalyx, en la cual este ha sido incluido corresponden a grupos monofiléticos. / Abstract. The Erythroxylum macrophyllum complex is a hard group for taxonomic delimitation, because of its broad distribution and morphological variation. In order to test the validity of the species courrently included in the complex, a population aggregation analisis (PAA) was carried out; to explore the phylogenetic position of the complex a cladistic study was do, using morphological and anatomical characters. It was possible delimit four species in the complex: E. macrophyllum, E. savannarum stat. nov. (previously treated as a variety of E. macrophyllum) and two new species, the first from Bolivia-Brasil and the second from Colombia-Panama, both are described and illustrated. The cladistic analysils adds evidence that neither the E. macrophyllum complex nor the section Macrocalyx are monophyletic groups.Maestrí

Sistemática y biogeografía de la sección Casparya (Begonia, Begoniaceae)

In this dissertation, I propose that integration of phylogenetic, biogeographical and climatic trends may help to understand ecological patterns of diversity. For example, the lack of correspondence between the phylogenetic and niche divergences in a mid-Andean centered group: the environmental niche is not more different for phylogenetically distant species than for close related ones. Based on the previous framework, I evaluate hypotheses on the dynamics of net rates of diversification, the link between spatial, climatic niche and phylogenetic relationships and the evolutionary change in morphological characters and their implications for taxonomy. I used as study system the genus Begonia, but the conclusions probably may apply to Other plant groups with a similar biology and distribution. Erythroxylum in Focus: An Interdisciplinary Review of an Overlooked Genus

The genus Erythroxylum contains species used by indigenous people of South America long before the domestication of plants. Two species, E. coca and E. novogranatense, have been utilized for thousands of years specifically for their tropane alkaloid content. While abuse of the narcotic cocaine has impacted society on many levels, these species and their wild relatives contain untapped resources for the benefit of mankind in the form of foods, pharmaceuticals, phytotherapeutic products, and other high-value plant-derived metabolites.
