    Ways that designers and fabricators can help each other

    We show that, when designers and fabricators understand each other's art, there are ways to combine their techniques to achieve the best results with the minimum difficulty. We share some problems that we have encountered, and sometimes caused ourselves, in hopes of helping the reader avoid the same pitfalls.

    Efficient optomechanical cooling in one-dimensional interferometers

    We present a scattering model which enables us to describe the mechanical force, including the velocity dependent component, exerted by light on polarizable massive objects in a general one-dimensional optical system. We show that the light field in an interferometer can be very sensitive to the velocity of a moving scatterer.     The present volume contains the results of Working Package 200 of the study LASSO (long-term applications of tethered systems in orbit) led by the firm OHB-System. The LASSO project was sponsored by the German Space Agency (DARA) (ID No.: 50 TA 9007). LASSO is a cooperation project between the German Aerospace Research Establishment (DLR), industry and universities with the objective of improving the competitiveness of the German industry and research establishments in the field of tether technology and to create a basis for further national tether activities. The reports compiled here contain a variety of scientific and operational applications for non-conducting tethers, most of which reports have picked up, developed and critically assessed suggestions from literature and different tether conferences. In addition to this, various new proposals have been developed, which previously have not been described in literature. One important result of the Working Package 200 is the definition of different leading concepts for future German activities in the field of tether technology. The following data could be measured: Frequency Range: 11.7 -12.5 GHz; Saturation Output Power: > 110 W; Phaseshift: < 38 ; AM-PM Conversion: < 4 /dB; Overall Efficiency: > 60%; Mass: < 2600 Gramm. With the TWT TL 12113 and the EPC AT 110 an extremely high weight and high efficient TWTA with unregulated bus voltage is now available.     The aim of this partial project was the examination of laser aided topometrical methods and their comparison with white light projection. Thereby, in particular new procedures for the usage at dynamic measurement problems were to be tested and examined in view of a future application within industry- and user-suitable measuring systems. Both methods contain specific advantages and disadvantages, which are to be weighed up concerning specific tasks. In our opinion though, at the state of the art the white light method has a wider range of application, which can also be seen when looking at the number of installed systems. There are several restrictions for coherent laser sources, being in particular relevant for the industrial user: low output power (up to 100 mW), partly missing long term stability, insufficient acceptance by the user because of security aspects. Therefore, the flexible projection of miniaturized grids with partly coherent or incoherent laser light was examined as a new and alternative attempt. Laser diodes with an output power of 1W or more will open a wide range of application for topometrical 3D-metrology with incoherent laser projection.     The aim of the project was the examination and analysis of new evaluation techniques and algorithms for the computer-aided data analysis of holographic fringe patterns. With regard to industrial use of the systems we have particularly examined the possibilities of evaluation on those methods, which use new electronic recording techniques (i.e. speckle interferometry), especially concentrating on automation, reliability and repetition time. Within the frame of this project powerful algorithms for fringe analysis have been developed, examined and tested according to specific problems of different users. These algorithms allow the evaluation of interferograms which were recorded either holographically or with electro-optic methods. Repetition rates of a few seconds have been realized depending on the specific requirements of the user. The practical application of these algorithms for the automatic component analysis with good/bad decision was demonstrated with the HOLOMAN-milestone system - in cooperation with the partners MAN Technologie AG and Labor Dr. Steinbichler.     Fuer bestimmte Anwendungen in Satelliten werden Wanderfeldroehren mit strahlungsgekuehltem Kollektor bevorzugt, um den Waermehaushalt des Systems geringer zu belasten. Dem gegenueber erhoeht sich allerdings das Gewicht der Roehre wegen des fuer die noetige Abstrahloberflaeche groesseren Kollektors. Im Rahmen des dokumentierten Vorhabens wurde ein strahlungsgekuehlter Kollektor fuer eine 12 GHz 100W Satelliten-Wanderfeldroehre entwickelt und als TL 12110 R qualifiziert. Radiation-cooled collectors, however, increase the weight of the tubes on account of their larger radiation surfaces.
