The growth and viability of sixty-three species of marine bacteria as influenced by hydrostatic pressure
The hydrostatic pressure of sea water, which increases approximately 0.1 atmosphere per meter of depth, was found to affect the viability, reproduction, and morphology of 63 stock cultures of marine bacteria representing several genera. Many of the cultures were killed at 27° C by pressures ranging from 200 to 600 atm, although some few reproduced at 600 atm. Initial inoculum concentrations of the various bacteria appeared to influence their ability to reproduce or to tolerate high pressures. Pressures exceeding 400 atm inhibited the fission of certain bacteria without stopping their growth, thereby resulting in bizarre cells, some of which formed Jong filaments
Metal Enrichment in the Reionization Epoch
The presence of elements heavier than helium ("metals") is of fundamental
importance for a large number of astrophysical processes occurring in planet,
star and galaxy formation; it also affects cosmic structure formation and
evolution in several ways. Even a small amount of heavy elements can
dramatically alter the chemistry of the gas, opening the path to complex
molecules. Metals might enhance the ability of the gas to radiate away its
thermal energy, thus favoring the formation of gravitationally bound objects;
they can also condensate in a solid phase (dust grains), partly or totally
blocking radiation from luminous sources. Finally, they represent useful
tracers of energy deposition by stars and probe the physical properties of the
environment by absorption or emission lines. Last, but certainly not least,
life -- as we know it on Earth -- is tightly related to the presence of at
least some of the heavy elements. In this pedagogical review I will concentrate
on the connection between early metal enrichment and cosmic reionization. As we
will see these two processes are intimately connected and their joint study
might turn out to be fundamental in understanding the overall evolution of the
Universe during the first billion years after the Big Bang, an epoch
corresponding to redshifts z>6.Comment: Book chapter in Understanding the Epoch of Cosmic Reionization:

The formation of black holes in spherically symmetric gravitational collapse
We consider the spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat Einstein-Vlasov
system. We find explicit conditions on the initial data, with ADM mass M, such
that the resulting spacetime has the following properties: there is a family of
radially outgoing null geodesics where the area radius r along each geodesic is
bounded by 2M, the timelike lines are incomplete, and for r>2M
the metric converges asymptotically to the Schwarzschild metric with mass M.
The initial data that we construct guarantee the formation of a black hole in
the evolution. We also give examples of such initial data with the additional
property that the solutions exist for all and all Schwarzschild time,
i.e., we obtain global existence in Schwarzschild coordinates in situations
where the initial data are not small. Some of our results are also established
for the Einstein equations coupled to a general matter model characterized by
conditions on the matter quantities.Comment: 36 pages. A corollary on global existence in Schwarzschild
coordinates for data which are not small is added together with minor
modification
Maxwell Equations in Complex Form of Majorana - Oppenheimer, Solutions with Cylindric Symmetry in Riemann S_{3} and Lobachevsky H_{3} Spaces
Complex formalism of Riemann - Silberstein - Majorana - Oppenheimer in
Maxwell electrodynamics is extended to the case of arbitrary pseudo-Riemannian
space - time in accordance with the tetrad recipe of Tetrode - Weyl - Fock -
Ivanenko. In this approach, the Maxwell equations are solved exactly on the
background of static cosmological Einstein model, parameterized by special
cylindrical coordinates and realized as a Riemann space of constant positive
curvature. A discrete frequency spectrum for electromagnetic modes depending on
the curvature radius of space and three parameters is found, and corresponding
basis electromagnetic solutions have been constructed explicitly. In the case
of elliptical model a part of the constructed solutions should be rejected by
continuity considerations. Similar treatment is given for Maxwell equations in
hyperbolic Lobachevsky model, the complete basis of electromagnetic solutions
in corresponding cylindrical coordinates has been constructed as well, no
quantization of frequencies of electromagnetic modes arises.Comment: 39 page

Weighing Super-Massive Black Holes with Narrow Fe K Line
It has been suggested that the narrow cores of the Fe K emission
lines in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) are likely produced in the torus, the
inner radius of which can be measured by observing the lag time between the
and band flux variations. In this paper we compare the virial products of
the infrared time lags and the narrow Fe K widths for 10 type 1 AGNs
with the black hole masses from other techniques. We find the narrow Fe
K line width is in average 2.6 times broader than
expected assuming an isotropic velocity distribution of the torus at the
distance measured by the infrared lags. We propose the thick disk model of the
torus could explain the observed larger line width. Another possibility is the
contamination by emission from the broad line region or the outer accretion
disk. Alternatively, the narrow iron line might originate from the inner most
part of the obscuring torus within the sublimation radius, while the infrared
emission from outer cooler part. We note the correlation between the black hole
masses based on this new technique and those based on other known techniques is
statistically insignificant. We argue that this could be attributed to the
small sample size and the very large uncertainties in the measurements of iron
K line widths. The next generation of X-ray observatories could help verify the
origin of the narrow iron K line and the reliability of this new
technique.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables, Science China G, in pres
Maxwell equations in matrix form, squaring procedure, separating the variables, and structure of electromagnetic solutions
The Riemann -- Silberstein -- Majorana -- Oppenheimer approach to the Maxwell
electrodynamics in vacuum is investigated within the matrix formalism. The
matrix form of electrodynamics includes three real 4 \times 4 matrices. Within
the squaring procedure we construct four formal solutions of the Maxwell
equations on the base of scalar Klein -- Fock -- Gordon solutions. The problem
of separating physical electromagnetic waves in the linear space
\lambda_{0}\Psi^{0}+\lambda_{1}\Psi^{1}+\lambda_{2}\Psi^{2}+ lambda_{3}\Psi^{3}
is investigated, several particular cases, plane waves and cylindrical waves,
are considered in detail.Comment: 26 pages 16 International Seminar NCPC, May 19-22, 2009, Minsk,
