Constant-length substitutions and countable scrambled sets
In this paper we provide examples of topological dynamical systems having
either finite or countable scrambled sets. In particular we study conditions
for the existence of Li-Yorke, asymptotic and distal pairs in constant--length
substitution dynamical systems. Starting from a circle rotation we also
construct a dynamical system having Li--Yorke pairs, none of which is
recurrent
Assessment of left atrial volume before and after pulmonary thromboendarterectomy in chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension.
BackgroundImpaired left ventricular diastolic filling is common in chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH), and recent studies support left ventricular underfilling as a cause. To investigate this further, we assessed left atrial volume index (LAVI) in patients with CTEPH before and after pulmonary thromboendarterectomy (PTE).MethodsForty-eight consecutive CTEPH patients had pre- & post-PTE echocardiograms and right heart catheterizations. Parameters included mean pulmonary artery pressure (mPAP), pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR), cardiac index, LAVI, & mitral E/A ratio. Echocardiograms were performed 6 ± 3 days pre-PTE and 10 ± 4 days post-PTE. Regression analyses compared pre- and post-PTE LAVI with other parameters.ResultsPre-op LAVI (mean 19.0 ± 7 mL/m2) correlated significantly with pre-op PVR (R = -0.45, p = 0.001), mPAP (R = -0.28, p = 0.05) and cardiac index (R = 0.38, p = 0.006). Post-PTE, LAVI increased by 18% to 22.4 ± 7 mL/m2 (p = 0.003). This change correlated with change in PVR (765 to 311 dyne-s/cm5, p = 0.01), cardiac index (2.6 to 3.2 L/min/m2, p = 0.02), and E/A (.95 to 1.44, p = 0.002).ConclusionIn CTEPH, smaller LAVI is associated with lower cardiac output, higher mPAP, and higher PVR. LAVI increases by ~20% after PTE, and this change correlates with changes in PVR and mitral E/A. The rapid increase in LAVI supports the concept that left ventricular diastolic impairment and low E/A pre-PTE are due to left heart underfilling rather than inherent left ventricular diastolic dysfunction
On passion and moral behavior in achievement settings: The mediating role of pride
The Dualistic Model of Passion (Vallerand et al., 2003) distinguishes two types of passion: harmonious passion (HP) and obsessive passion (OP) that predict adaptive and less adaptive outcomes, respectively. In the present research, we were interested in understanding the role of passion in the adoption of moral behavior in achievement settings. It was predicted that the two facets of pride (authentic and hubristic; Tracy & Robins, 2007) would mediate the passion-moral behavior relationship. Specifically, because people who are passionate about a given activity are highly involved in it, it was postulated that they should typically do well and thus experience high levels of pride when engaged in the activity. However, it was also hypothesized that while both types of passion should be conducive to authentic pride, only OP should lead to hubristic pride. Finally, in line with past research on pride (Carver, Sinclair, & Johnson, 2010; Tracy et al., 2009), only hubristic pride was expected to negatively predict moral behavior, while authentic pride was expected to positively predict moral behavior. Results of two studies conducted with paintball players (N=163, Study 1) and athletes (N=296, Study 2) supported the proposed model. The Electromagnetic Counterpart of the Binary Neutron Star Merger LIGO/VIRGO GW170817. VII. Properties of the Host Galaxy and Constraints on the Merger Timescale
We present the properties of NGC 4993, the host galaxy of GW170817, the first
gravitational wave (GW) event from the merger of a binary neutron star (BNS)
system and the first with an electromagnetic (EM) counterpart. We use both
archival photometry and new optical/near-IR imaging and spectroscopy, together
with stellar population synthesis models to infer the global properties of the
host galaxy. We infer a star formation history peaked at Gyr ago,
with subsequent exponential decline leading to a low current star formation
rate of 0.01 M yr, which we convert into a binary merger
timescale probability distribution. We find a median merger timescale of
Gyr, with a 90% confidence range of Gyr. This
in turn indicates an initial binary separation of R,
comparable to the inferred values for Galactic BNS systems. We also use new and
archival images to measure a projected offset of
the optical counterpart of kpc (0.64) from the center of NGC 4993
and to place a limit of mag on any pre-existing emission,
which rules out the brighter half of the globular cluster luminosity function.
Finally, the age and offset of the system indicates it experienced a modest
natal kick with an upper limit of km s. Future GWEM
observations of BNS mergers will enable measurement of their population delay
time distribution, which will directly inform their viability as the dominant

Fast rates for empirical vector quantization
We consider the rate of convergence of the expected loss of empirically
optimal vector quantizers. Earlier results show that the mean-squared expected
distortion for any fixed distribution supported on a bounded set and satisfying
some regularity conditions decreases at the rate O(log n/n). We prove that this
rate is actually O(1/n). Although these conditions are hard to check, we show
that well-polarized distributions with continuous densities supported on a
bounded set are included in the scope of this result.Comment: 18 page
