    Content Analysis of Acculturation Research in Counseling and Counseling Psychology: A 22-Year Review

    The authors conducted a 22-year (1988–2009) content analysis of quantitative empirical research that included acculturation and/or enculturation as a study variable(s). A total of 138 studies in 134 articles were systematically evaluated from 5 major American Psychological Association and American Counseling Association journals in counseling and counseling psychology, including Journal of Counseling Psychology, The Counseling Psychologist, Journal of Counseling and Development, Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development, and Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology. To guide the analysis, the authors conceptualized acculturation/enculturation as a “bilinear” (i.e., developing cultural orientations to both majority and ethnic cultures) and “multidimensional” (i.e., across multiple areas such as behaviors, values, identity, and knowledge) cultural socialization process that occurs in interaction with “social contexts” (e.g., home, school, work, West Coast, Midwest). Findings include the patterns and trends of acculturation/enculturation research in (a) conceptualization and use of acculturation/enculturation variable(s), (b) research designs (e.g., sample characteristics, instruments, data collection, and analysis methods), (c) content areas, and (d) changes in total publications and trends over time. Additionally, meta-analyses were conducted on the relationship of acculturation/enculturation and a few key variables of mental health, adjustment, and well-being. Major findings and directions for future research are discussed

    Muslim Americans’ Experience of the Pandemic at the Intersection of History, Culture, and Gender

    The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of Muslims in the U. S during the COVID-19 pandemic. Religion has been playing an important role in individuals’ experiences of the pandemic. Many studies were essays on how to utilize a theological approach to respond to and cope with the pandemic. There is limited research on the impact of how Muslim communities in the U. S responded to the pandemic, particularly from the lens of Islamic history, religious beliefs, and attitudes, and being minoritized in a predominantly Christian country. Using an oral history approach, individual virtual interviews were conducted. The study revealed several main themes, such as the functions of religion, the influence of the pandemic on religious beliefs and traditions, and immigrant and refugee experiences. The implication of the interaction of history, culture, and gender in Muslim communities and their responses to the pandemic is discussed

    Muscle Ultrasound Changes and Physical Function of Critically Ill Children: A Comparison of Rectus Femoris Cross-Sectional Area and Quadriceps Thickness Measurements.

    UNLABELLED: Quadriceps thickness (QT) and rectus femoris cross-sectional area (RFCSA) are both used to evaluate muscle changes in critically ill children. However, their correlation and association with physical function has not been compared. OBJECTIVES: To compare QT with RFCSA changes, and their association with physical function in critically ill children. DESIGN SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study of children 0-18 years old admitted to a tertiary mixed PICU between January 2015 and October 2018 with PICU stay greater than 48 hours and greater than or equal to one organ dysfunction. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Ultrasound QT and RFCSA were measured at PICU admission, PICU discharge, hospital discharge, and 6 months post-discharge. QT and RFCSA changes from baseline were compared with each other and with change in motor function, physical ability, and physical health-related quality of life (HRQOL). RESULTS: Two hundred thirty-seven images from 66 subjects were analyzed. RFCSA change was not significantly different from QT change at PICU (-8.07% [interquartile range (IQR), -17.11% to 4.80%] vs -4.55% [IQR, -14.32% to 4.35%]; p = 0.927) or hospital discharge (-5.62% [IQR, -15.00% to 9.42%] vs -8.81% [IQR, -18.67% to 2.39%]; p = 0.238) but was significantly greater than QT change at 6 months (32.7% [IQR, 5.74-109.76%] vs 9.66% [IQR, -8.17% to 25.70%]; p < 0.001). Motor function change at PICU discharge was significantly associated with RFCSA change (adjusted β coefficient, 0.02 [95% CI, 0.01-0.03]; p = 0.013) but not QT change (adjusted β coefficient, -0.01 [95% CI, -0.02 to 0.01]; p = 0.415). Similar results were observed for physical HRQOL changes at hospital discharge (adjusted β coefficient for RFCSA change, 0.51 [95% CI, 0.10-0.92]; p = 0.017 and adjusted β coefficient for QT change, -0.21 [-0.76 to 0.35]; p = 0.458). Physical ability was not significantly associated with RFCSA or QT changes at 6 months post-discharge. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Ultrasound derived RFCSA is associated with PICU motor function and hospital discharge physical HRQOL changes, unlike QT, and may be more useful for in-hospital muscle monitoring in critically ill children

    Counseling students’ attitudes toward complementary and alternative medicine integration in counseling practice

    This study explored counseling students’ attitudes toward beliefs and personal experience with complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) integration in counseling practices. A total of 113 clinical mental health counseling students completed a demographic questionnaire, the CAM use, and the Complementary and Alternative Medicine Beliefs Inventory. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, nonparametric Chi-Square testing, Mann–Whitney U test, and logistic regression analysis to determine the prevalence of CAM use, CAM beliefs, and predictive factors of CAM integration. The results indicated differences in ethnicity, gender, and age for CAM use, CAM beliefs, and predictors of attitudes toward CAM integration. Recommendations for counseling practice and education regarding CAM use and community-based health promotion were discussed

    Complementary and Alternative Medicine Mind-Body Approaches Used Among Racially and Ethnically Diverse Adolescents

    Purpose The aim of this paper is to examine complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use among racially and ethnically diverse adolescents. Greater understanding of CAM use among this group is warranted to better inform health care providers in delivering a culturally relevant health promotion approach. Design and methods A secondary data analysis was conducted using the 2012 Child Complementary and Alternative Medicine Supplement of the National Health Interview Survey (CAM-NHIS) data, which was collected from a national sample of adolescents aged 12–17 years. A logistic regression test was employed to investigate the predictors associated with CAM use among racially and ethnically diverse adolescents. Results While Black and Hispanic adolescents were the least likely to use CAM compared to their White counterparts, families with higher incomes, higher education attainment, and adolescents who experienced pain were more likely to use CAM. Conclusions Findings suggest the need for future research to gain a greater understanding of CAM use among racially and ethnically diverse adolescents, and insights into how health disparities impact CAM use. Greater understanding of how CAM use intersects with health beliefs and outcomes is also warranted. Practice implications Based on the CAM-NHIS survey, few racially and ethnically diverse adolescents have reported use of CAM. Development of culturally appropriate instruments and methods to assess CAM use among racially and ethnically diverse adolescents may yield specific data for this population. Informed health care providers can advocate for improved access to CAM for minority adolescents and alter disparate use

    Identifying Drug Effects via Pathway Alterations using an Integer Linear Programming Optimization Formulation on Phosphoproteomic Data

    Understanding the mechanisms of cell function and drug action is a major endeavor in the pharmaceutical industry. Drug effects are governed by the intrinsic properties of the drug (i.e., selectivity and potency) and the specific signaling transduction network of the host (i.e., normal vs. diseased cells). Here, we describe an unbiased, phosphoproteomicbased approach to identify drug effects by monitoring drug-induced topology alterations. With the proposed method, drug effects are investigated under several conditions on a cell-type specific signaling network. First, starting with a generic pathway made of logical gates, we build a cell-type specific map by constraining it to fit 13 key phopshoprotein signals under 55 experimental cases. Fitting is performed via a formulation as an Integer Linear Program (ILP) and solution by standard ILP solvers; a procedure that drastically outperforms previous fitting schemes. Then, knowing the cell topology, we monitor the same key phopshoprotein signals under the presence of drug and cytokines and we re-optimize the specific map to reveal the drug-induced topology alterations. To prove our case, we make a pathway map for the hepatocytic cell line HepG2 and we evaluate the effects of 4 drugs: 3 selective inhibitors for the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) and a non selective drug. We confirm effects easily predictable from the drugs’ main target (i.e. EGFR inhibitors blocks the EGFR pathway) but we also uncover unanticipated effects due to either drug promiscuity or the cell’s specific topology. An interesting finding is that the selective EGFR inhibitor Gefitinib is able to inhibit signaling downstream the Interleukin-1alpha (IL-1α) pathway; an effect that cannot be extracted from binding affinity based approaches. Our method represents an unbiased approach to identify drug effects on a small to medium size pathways and is scalable to larger topologies with any type of signaling perturbations (small molecules, 3 RNAi etc). The method is a step towards a better picture of drug effects in pathways, the cornerstone in identifying the mechanisms of drug efficacy and toxicity
