Vascular Involvement in an Unusual Location

    No full text
Neurofibromatosis is an autosomal dominant genetic disease characterized by abnormal growth that involves tissues of mesodermal and neuroectodermal origin. Aneurysms are rarely seen in peripheral arteries. This report presents a case of ruptured arterial aneurysm secondary to neurofibromatosis; the lesion occurred in the profunda femoris artery, a highly unusual location. Treatment of patients with ruptured arterial aneurysm secondary to neurofibromatosis may be interventional or surgical. In this case, a surgical approach was successful. Evaluation of natural dyeing of leather with Rubia tinctorum extract [Derinin Rubia tinctorum ekstrakti{dotless} ile dogal boyanabilirliginin degerlendirilmesi]

The aspect of producing leather and textile products without impacting on the ecological balance, affecting both human and environmental health, is an important focal point to be pursued. Therefore, to address some of these issues a study was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of dyeing leather with madder, which is a 100% natural dyestuff from the extract of Rubia tinctorum and ascertain its friendly attributes to the environment. Treatment designs in the study included pre and post mordanting methods which were applied to selected types of leather and subsequently subjected to three different mordants: potassium aluminium sulphate [KAI(SO 4) 2.12H 2O], copper sulphate [CuSO 4.5H 2O] and ferro sulphate [FeSO 4.7H 2O]. This approach was done to potentially obtain different colors and improve color fastnesses. In this study, the investigation was based on two primary source of tanned material, chrome and vegetable tanned leathers. Color measurements of the dyed leathers were carried out using a Minolta CM-508d brand spectrophotometer. On the other hand, dyestuff exhaustions were determined using a Shimadzu UV-1601 PC UV-Visible spectrophotometer. On the finished leather products, parameters such as color fastness to rubbing was determined with, the TS EN ISO 11640, color fastness to perspiration with, the TS EN ISO 11641, and color fastness to light with, the ISO 105-B02 standard method. Moreover these parameters were comparatively analyzed and reported. The results eventually indicated that the obtained color and color fastness values varied according to; the type of tanning method, mordanting method, and mordant type. Most of the result values obtained were generally at satisfactory levels which were between 3/4 and 5 fastness values. Different extraction methods, different mordants, and mordanting methods to be carried out in future are suggested so as to optimize the results of the current study

AimSelective carotid endarterectomy (SCE) is described as the extraction of atheromatous plaque through an arteriotomy made starting from the common carotid artery and extending to the external carotid artery. The aim of the present study was to report the initial experience of SCE technique at our department.Patients and MethodsCollected data on all SCE were retrospectively analysed. The study period was from May 2010 to the end of April 2013. A total of 30 patients underwent SCE. The patients were operated on under general anaesthesia.ResultsThe mean age of the patients was 70.76.0years. The risk factors were coronary artery disease in nine patients, hypertension in 18 patients, smoking in nine patients, hypercholesterolemia in 17 patients, diabetes in 14 patients, peripheral arterial occlusive disease in three patients and a family history of coronary artery disease in six patients. One patient had simultaneous coronary artery bypass surgery for severe left main coronary artery disease. There were no hospital deaths. Two patients had cervical haematoma that regressed without intervention. The mean carotid artery clamping time was 13.5 +/- 3.4min (range: 8-25min), and the mean postoperative hospitalization time was 3.2 +/- 1.2days.ConclusionSCE is a safe and simple procedure that eliminates patching

A good surgical option for ischemic mitral regurgitation in co-morbid patients: semicircular reduction annuloplasty.

BACKGROUND: Ring annuloplasty is the standard treatment of ischemic mitral regurgitation (MR), however, it has been associated with some drawbacks. It abolishes normal annular dynamics and freezes the posterior leaflet. In the present study, we evaluated Paneth suture annuloplasty in chronic ischemic MR and both early and mid-term outcomes of the technique on a selected population. METHODS: The study period was from June 2010 to June 2012. We operated on 21 patients who had the diagnosis of coronary artery disease and MR of grade 3 or 4. The patients had both a coronary artery bypass operation and the mitral semicircular reduction annuloplasty described by Paneth-Burr. The data on the patients were retrospectively collected. Patients were contacted by outpatient clinic controls for mid-term results. RESULTS: The male/female ratio was 10/11. The mean age of the patients was 71.0 ± 6.4 years. Preoperative and postoperative left ventricular ejection fraction was statistically similar (P = 0.973). Early postoperative MR grade (mean, 0.57 ± 0.51) was statistically lower than the preoperative MR grades (mean, 3.38 ± 0.50) (P < 0.001). There was no revision for excess bleeding. Two patients had prolonged hospitalization, one for sternal infection and the other for severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. No hospital or late postoperative deaths occurred. The mean late postoperative MR grade was 0.66 ± 0.97 degrees. One patient had progression of MR in the later follow-up, which was treated by mitral valve replacement. CONCLUSION: Semicircular reduction annuloplasty is an effective, inexpensive and easy surgical annuloplasty technique with low mortality and morbidity in severe symptomatic ischemic MR

recurrent brachial artery embolism: case report

Subclavian artery stenosis represents a relatively lower rate for upper extremity emboli source. Subclavian artery stenosis with thrombus localized distal to the stenosis was diagnosed on the arteriography of a patient who had a history of three previous brachial artery embolectomies. In this report, a case with subclavian artery stenosis causing recurrent brachial artery embolism who was successfully treated using subclavian-carotid transposition is presented
