    Chemically driven switches for online detection of pH changes in microfluidic devices

    The internal walls of microfabricated fluidic channels were functionalized with a selfassembled monolayer of Rhodamine B lactam. This molecule has the capability to interconvert between its open fluorescent amide form and the closed non-fluorescent lactam form upon changes of the pH conditions. The interconversion (switch) between the two reversible forms is achieved by addition of an acid or a base and is consistent with a reaction mechanism of the first order. This paper describes the online observation of such fluorescent switch covalently anchored to the channel and proposes this method as a possible sensor for the monitoring of pH changes in microreactors

    Monolayer-functionalized microfluidics devices for optical sensing of acidity

    This paper describes the integration of opto-chemosensors in microfluidics networks. Our technique exploits the internal surface of the network as a platform to build a sensing system by coating the surface with a self-assembled monolayer and subsequently binding a fluorescent sensing molecule to the monolayer. Fluorescent molecules were used that can switch between a fluorescent and a non-fluorescent state, depending on the acidity of the surrounding solution. Two systems were investigated. The first employs surface confinement of a Rhodamine B dye in a glass micro channel that serves as a molecular switch in organic solutions. Upon rinsing the micro channels with acidic or basic solutions it was possible to switch between the fluorescent and non- fluorescent forms reversibly. Moreover, this system could be used to monitor the mixing of two solutions of different acidity along the micro channel. To widen the scope of optical sensing in micro channels an Oregon Green dye derivative was immobilized, which functions as a sensing molecule for pH differences in aqueous solutions. In this case, a hybrid system was used consisting of a glass slide and PDMS channels. The fluorescence intensity was found to be directly correlated to the pH of the solution in contact, indicating the possibility of using such a system as a pH sensor. These systems allow real-time measurements and can be easily implemented in micro- and nanofluidics systems thus enabling analysis of extremely small sample volumes in a fast and reproducible manner

    Canine pseudopregnancy: an evaluation of prevalence and current treatment protocols in the UK

    Background: There is a dearth of literature on pseudopregnancy in the bitch, with only a few treatment-based studies published since the 1990s. Pseudopregnancy may be under-recognised in bitches and may account for a proportion of behavioural cases seen in veterinary practices including aggression. Little is known about commonly used treatments for overtly pseudopregnant bitches and it is possible that current regimes may not be prescribed for a sufficient duration to control any clinical signs including, physical and behavioural changes. To investigate current trends in diagnosis and treatment of canine pseudopregnancy, a postal survey was sent to 2000 randomly selected veterinary surgeons in UK veterinary practices. The questionnaire queried how often vets recognise cases of pseudopregnancy in spayed and entire bitches, which physical or behavioural signs are commonly recognised for diagnosis, and which management or treatment protocols are used. Results: The response rate was 19.8% (397/2000). Ninety-six percent of veterinary surgeons reported seeing pseudopregnant bitches showing behavioural changes without any physical changes within the last 12 months. Of those behavioural changes, collecting and mothering objects was the most frequently reported behavioural sign (96%). Ninety-seven percent of vets had seen aggression in pseudopregnant bitches. Nevertheless, only 52% of vets routinely asked owners about behavioural changes during consultations. Forty-nine percent of respondents reported seeing pseudopregnancy in spayed bitches. The most commonly reported physical sign was enlarged mammary glands and/or milk production (89%). Treatment options varied (surgical, medical or none) and depended on duration and severity of physical and behavioural signs, owners’ preference, cost, concurrent disease, drug availability and previous history. Conclusions: This is the largest epidemiological study of canine pseudopregnancy in the UK. The prevalence and severity of clinical signs in dogs with pseudopregnancy are variable and possibly under-estimated. Dogs with overt pseudopregnancy experience diverse physical and behavioural changes and information on standard treatment protocols are lacking. Although, progress on our understanding of diagnosis and treatment of pseudopregnancy in spayed and entire bitches has been made, further studies are warranted

    New proglacial meteorology and river stage observations from Inglefield Land and Pituffik, NW Greenland

    Meltwater runoff from the Greenland ice sheet (GrIS) is an important contributor to global sea level rise, but substantial uncertainty exists in its measurement and prediction. Common approaches for estimating ice sheet runoff are in situ gauging of proglacial rivers draining the ice sheet and surface mass balance (SMB) modeling. To obtain hydrological and meteorological data sets suitable for both runoff stage characterization and, pending the establishment of stage–discharge curves, SMB model evaluation, we established an automated weather station (AWS) and a cluster of traditional and experimental river stage sensors on the Minturn River, the largest proglacial river draining Inglefield Land, NW Greenland. Secondary installations measuring river stage were installed in the Fox Canyon River and North River at Pituffik Space Base, NW Greenland. Proglacial runoff at these sites is dominated by supraglacial processes only, uniquely advantaging them for SMB studies. The three installations provide rare hydrological time series and an opportunity to evaluate experimental measurements of river stage from a harsh, little-studied polar region. The installed instruments include submerged vented and non-vented pressure transducers, a bubbler sensor, experimental bank-mounted laser rangefinders, and time-lapse cameras. The first 3 years of observations (2019 to 2021) from these stations indicate (a) a meltwater runoff season from late June to late August/early September that is roughly synchronous throughout the region; (b) the early onset (∼ 23 June to 8 July) of a strong diurnal runoff signal in 2019 and 2020, suggesting minimal meltwater storage in snow and/or firn; (c) 1 d lagged air temperature that displays the strongest correlation with river stage; (d) river stage that correlates more strongly with ablation zone albedo than with net radiation; and (e) the late-summer rain-on-ice events appear to trigger the region's sharpest and largest floods. The new gauging stations provide valuable in situ hydrological observations that are freely available through the PROMICE network (https://promice.org/weather-stations/, last access: 14 September 2023).</p

    Synthesis and electrical properties of fullerene-based molecular junctions on silicon substrate

    We report the synthesis and the electrical properties of fullerene-based molecular junctions on silicon substrate in which the highly \pi-conjugated molecule C60 (\pi quantum well) is isolated from the electrodes by alkyl chains (\sigma tunnel barriers). Initially, the Si/SiO2/\sigmaC60 architecture was prepared either by sequential synthesis (3 different routes) or by direct grafting of the presynthesized C60-\sigma-Si(OEt)3 molecule. We described the chemical synthesis of these routes and the physico-chemical properties of the molecular monolayers. Then, the second \sigma tunnel barrier was added on the Si/SiO2/\sigma C60 junction by applying a hanging mercury drop electrode thiolated with an alkanethiol monolayer. We compared the electronic transport properties of the Si/SiO2/\sigma C60//Hg and Si/SiO2/\sigma C60//\sigmaHg molecular junctions, and we demonstrated by transition voltage spectroscopy that the fullerene LUMO - metal Fermi energy offset can be tailored from ~ 0.2 eV to ~ 1 eV by changing the length of the alkyl chain between the C60 core and the Hg metal electrode (i. e. from direct C60//Hg contact to 14 carbon atoms tunnel barrier).Comment: Single pdf file including: main text, figures, tables and supporting information

This article reviews some important advances in the strategies for controlled placement of nanoscale building blocks. In particular, we will overview template assisted placement that utilizes physical, molecular, or electrostatic templates, DNA-programmed assembly, placement using dielectrophoresis, approaches for non-close-packed assembly of spherical particles, and recent development of focused placement schemes including electrostatic funneling, focused placement via molecular gradient patterns, electrodynamic focusing of charged aerosols, and others
