Quantum field effects in coupled atomic and molecular Bose-Einstein condensates
This paper examines the parameter regimes in which coupled atomic and
molecular Bose-Einstein condensates do not obey the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.
Stochastic field equations for coupled atomic and molecular condensates are
derived using the functional positive-P representation. These equations
describe the full quantum state of the coupled condensates and include the
commonly used Gross-Pitaevskii equation as the noiseless limit. The model
includes all interactions between the particles, background gas losses,
two-body losses and the numerical simulations are performed in three
dimensions. It is found that it is possible to differentiate the quantum and
semiclassical behaviour when the particle density is sufficiently low and the
coupling is sufficiently strong.Comment: 4 postscript figure
vbyCaHbeta CCD Photometry of Clusters. VIII. The Super-Metal Rich, Old Open Cluster NGC 6791
CCD photometry on the intermediate-band vbyCaHbeta system is presented for
the metal-rich, old open cluster, NGC 6791. Preliminary analysis led to [Fe/H]
above +0.4 with an anomalously high reddening and an age below 5 Gyr. A revised
calibration between (b-y)_0 and [Fe/H] at a given temperature shows that the
traditional color-metallicity relations underestimate the color of the turnoff
stars at high metallicity. With the revised relation, the metallicity from hk
and the reddening for NGC 6791 become [Fe/H] = +0.45 +/- 0.04 and E(b-y) =
0.113 +/- 0.012 or E(B-V) = 0.155 +/- 0.016. Using the same technique,
reanalysis of the photometry for NGC 6253 produces [Fe/H] = +0.58 +/-0.04 and
E(b-y) = 0.120 +/- 0.018 or E(B-V) = 0.160 +/- 0.025. The errors quoted include
both the internal and external errors. For NGC 6791, the metallicity from m_1
is a factor of two below that from hk, a result that may be coupled to the
consistently low metal abundance from DDO photometry of the cluster and the
C-deficiency found from high dispersion spectroscopy. E(B-V) is the same value
predicted from Galactic reddening maps. With E(B-V) = 0.15 and [Fe/H] = +0.45,
the available isochrones predict an age of 7.0 +/- 1.0 Gyr and an apparent
modulus of (m-M) = 13.60 +/- 0.15, with the dominant source of the uncertainty
arising from inconsistencies among the isochrones. The reanalysis of NGC 6253
with the revised lower reddening confirms that on both the hk and m_1
metallicity scales, NGC 6253, while less than half the age of NGC 6791, remains
at least as metal-rich as NGC 6791, if not richer.Comment: Accepted for Astronomical Journal. 42 p. latex file includes 11

Two-Loop Beta Functions Without Feynman Diagrams
Starting from a consistency requirement between T-duality symmetry and
renormalization group flows, the two-loop metric beta function is found for a
d=2 bosonic sigma model on a generic, torsionless background. The result is
obtained without Feynman diagram calculations, and represents further evidence
that duality symmetry severely constrains renormalization flows.Comment: 4 pp., REVTeX. Added discussion on scheme (in)dependence; final

The protein import apparatus of chloroplasts
Routing of cytosolically synthesized precursor proteins into chloroplasts is a specific process which involves a multitude of soluble and membrane components. In this review we wil1 focus on early events of the translocation pathway of nuclear coded plastidic precursor proteins and compare import routes for polypeptide of the outer chloroplast envelope to that of internal chloroplast compartments. A number of proteins housed in the chloroplast envelopes have been implied to be involved in the translocation process, but so far a certain function has not been assigned to any of these proteins. The only exception could be an envelope localized hsc 70 homologue which could retain the import competence of a precursor protein in transit into the organelle
The Central Regions of M31 in the 3 - 5 micron Wavelength Region
Images obtained with NIRI on the Gemini North telescope are used to
investigate the photometric properties of the central regions of M31 in the 3 -
5 micron wavelength range. The light distribution in the central arcsecond
differs from what is seen in the near-infrared in the sense that the difference
in peak brigh tness between P1 and P2 is larger in M' than in K'; no obvious
signature of P3 is dete cted in M'. These results can be explained if there is
a source of emission that contributes ~ 20% of the peak M' light of P1 and has
an effective temperature of no more than a few hundred K that is located
between P1 and P2. Based on the red K-M' color of this source, it is suggested
that the emission originates in a circumstellar dust shell surrounding a single
bright AGB star. A similar bright source that is ~ 8 arcsec from the center of
the galaxy is also detected in M'. Finally, the (L', K-L') color-magnitude
diagram of unblended stars shows a domin ant AGB population with photometric
characteristics that are similar to those of the most luminous M giants in the
Galactic bulge.Comment: To appear in the Astronomical Journa
Empirically Constrained Color-Temperature Relations. II. uvby
(Abriged) A new grid of theoretical color indices for the Stromgren uvby
photometric system has been derived from MARCS model atmospheres and SSG
synthetic spectra for cool dwarf and giant stars. At warmer temperatures this
grid has been supplemented with the synthetic uvby colors from recent Kurucz
atmospheric models without overshooting. Our transformations appear to
reproduce the observed colors of extremely metal-poor turnoff and giant stars
(i.e., [Fe/H]<-2). Due to a number of assumptions made in the synthetic color
calculations, however, our color-temperature relations for cool stars fail to
provide a suitable match to the uvby photometry of both cluster and field stars
having [Fe/H]>-2. To overcome this problem, the theoretical indices at
intermediate and high metallicities have been corrected using a set of color
calibrations based on field stars having accurate IRFM temperature estimates
and spectroscopic [Fe/H] values. Encouragingly, isochrones that employ the
transformations derived in this study are able to reproduce the observed CMDs
(involving u-v, v-b, and b-y colors) for a number of open and globular clusters
(including M92, M67, the Hyades, and 47Tuc) rather well. Moreover, our
interpretations of such data are very similar, if not identical, with those
given by VandenBerg & Clem (2003, AJ, 126, 778) from a consideration of BV(RI)c
observations for the same clusters. In the present investigation, we have also
analyzed the observed Stromgren photometry for the classic Population II
subdwarfs, compared our "final" (b-y)-Teff relationship with those derived
empirically in a number of recent studies, and examined in some detail the
dependence of the m1 index on [Fe/H].Comment: 70 pages, 26 figures. Accepted for publication in AJ (Feb 2004).

Polarized triplet production by circularly polarized photons
A process of the pair production by a circularly polarized photon in the
field of unpolarized atomic electron has been considered in the
Weizaecker-Williams approximation. The degree of longitudinal polarization of
positron and electron has been calculated. An exclusive cross-section as well
as a spectral distribution are obtained. We estimate the accuracy of our
calculations at the level of a few percent. We show the identity of the
positron polarization for considered process and for process of pair production
in the screened Coulomb field of nucleus.Comment: 9 pages, 3 picture
Quantum superchemistry: Dynamical quantum effects in coupled atomic and molecular Bose-Einstein condensates
We show that in certain parameter regimes there is a macroscopic dynamical breakdown of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Stochastic field equations for coupled atomic and molecular condensates are derived using the functional positive-P representation. These equations describe the full quantum state of the coupled condensates and include the commonly used Gross-Pitaevskii equation us the noiseless limit. The full quantum theory includes the spontaneous processes which will become significant when the atomic population is low. The experimental signature of the quantum effects will he the time scale of the revival of the atomic population after a near total conversion to the molecular condensate
Crossover behavior and multi-step relaxation in a schematic model of the cut-off glass transition
We study a schematic mode-coupling model in which the ideal glass transition
is cut off by a decay of the quadratic coupling constant in the memory
function. (Such a decay, on a time scale tau_I, has been suggested as the
likely consequence of activated processes.) If this decay is complete, so that
only a linear coupling remains at late times, then the alpha relaxation shows a
temporal crossover from a relaxation typical of the unmodified schematic model
to a final strongly slower-than-exponential relaxation. This crossover, which
differs somewhat in form from previous schematic models of the cut-off glass
transition, resembles light-scattering experiments on colloidal systems, and
can exhibit a `slower-than-alpha' relaxation feature hinted at there. We also
consider what happens when a similar but incomplete decay occurs, so that a
significant level of quadratic coupling remains for t>>tau_I. In this case the
correlator acquires a third, weaker relaxation mode at intermediate times. This
empirically resembles the beta process seen in many molecular glass formers. It
disappears when the initial as well as the final quadratic coupling lies on the
liquid side of the glass transition, but remains present even when the final
coupling is only just inside the liquid (so that the alpha relaxation time is
finite, but too long to measure). Our results are suggestive of how, in a
cut-off glass, the underlying `ideal' glass transition predicted by
mode-coupling theory can remain detectable through qualitative features in
dynamics.Comment: 14 pages revtex inc 10 figs; submitted to pr
Bremsstrahlung photon polarization for , and high energy collisions
The polarization of bremsstrahlung photon in the processes , and is calculated for peripheral
kinematics, in the high energy limit where the cross section does not decrease
with the incident energy. When the initial electron is
unpolarized(longitudinally polarized) the final photon can be linearly
(circularly) polarized. The Stokes parameters of the photon polarization are
calculated as a function of the kinematical variables of process: the energy of
recoil particle, the energy fraction of scattered electron, and the polar and
azimuthal angles of photon. Numerical results are given in form of tables, for
typical values of the relevant kinematic variables.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
