Improved quantum correlations in second harmonic generation with a squeezed pump
We investigate the effects of a squeezed pump on the quantum properties and
conversion efficiency of the light produced in single-pass second harmonic
generation. Using stochastic integration of the two-mode equations of motion in
the positive-P representation, we find that larger violations of
continuous-variable harmonic entanglement criteria are available for lesser
effective interaction strengths than with a coherent pump. This enhancement of
the quantum properties also applies to violations of the Reid-Drummond
inequalities used to demonstrate a harmonic version of the
Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradox. We find that the conversion efficiency is
largely unchanged except for very low pump intensities and high levels of
squeezing.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figure
vbyCaHbeta CCD Photometry of Clusters. VIII. The Super-Metal Rich, Old Open Cluster NGC 6791
CCD photometry on the intermediate-band vbyCaHbeta system is presented for
the metal-rich, old open cluster, NGC 6791. Preliminary analysis led to [Fe/H]
above +0.4 with an anomalously high reddening and an age below 5 Gyr. A revised
calibration between (b-y)_0 and [Fe/H] at a given temperature shows that the
traditional color-metallicity relations underestimate the color of the turnoff
stars at high metallicity. With the revised relation, the metallicity from hk
and the reddening for NGC 6791 become [Fe/H] = +0.45 +/- 0.04 and E(b-y) =
0.113 +/- 0.012 or E(B-V) = 0.155 +/- 0.016. Using the same technique,
reanalysis of the photometry for NGC 6253 produces [Fe/H] = +0.58 +/-0.04 and
E(b-y) = 0.120 +/- 0.018 or E(B-V) = 0.160 +/- 0.025. The errors quoted include
both the internal and external errors. For NGC 6791, the metallicity from m_1
is a factor of two below that from hk, a result that may be coupled to the
consistently low metal abundance from DDO photometry of the cluster and the
C-deficiency found from high dispersion spectroscopy. E(B-V) is the same value
predicted from Galactic reddening maps. With E(B-V) = 0.15 and [Fe/H] = +0.45,
the available isochrones predict an age of 7.0 +/- 1.0 Gyr and an apparent
modulus of (m-M) = 13.60 +/- 0.15, with the dominant source of the uncertainty
arising from inconsistencies among the isochrones. The reanalysis of NGC 6253
with the revised lower reddening confirms that on both the hk and m_1
metallicity scales, NGC 6253, while less than half the age of NGC 6791, remains
at least as metal-rich as NGC 6791, if not richer.Comment: Accepted for Astronomical Journal. 42 p. latex file includes 11

Conditional expectations associated with quantum states
An extension of the conditional expectations (those under a given subalgebra
of events and not the simple ones under a single event) from the classical to
the quantum case is presented. In the classical case, the conditional
expectations always exist; in the quantum case, however, they exist only if a
certain weak compatibility criterion is satisfied. This compatibility criterion
was introduced among others in a recent paper by the author. Then,
state-independent conditional expectations and quantum Markov processes are
studied. A classical Markov process is a probability measure, together with a
system of random variables, satisfying the Markov property and can equivalently
be described by a system of Markovian kernels (often forming a semigroup). This
equivalence is partly extended to quantum probabilities. It is shown that a
dynamical (semi)group can be derived from a given system of quantum observables
satisfying the Markov property, and the group generators are studied. The
results are presented in the framework of Jordan operator algebras, and a very
general type of observables (including the usual real-valued observables or
self-adjoint operators) is considered.Comment: 10 pages, the original publication is available at http://www.aip.or
Versatility of continuous-variable asymmetric tripartite entanglement allows Alice and Clare to keep secrets from Bob
The fully symmetric Gaussian tripartite entangled pure states will not exhibit two-mode Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering. This means that any two participants cannot share quantum secrets using the security of one-sided device independent quantum key distribution (1SDI-QKD) without involving the third. They are restricted at most to standard quantum key distribution, which is less secure. Here we demonstrate an asymmetric tripartite system that can exhibit bipartite EPR steering, so that two of the participants can use 1SDI-QKD without involving the other. This is possible because the promiscuity relations of continuous-variable tripartite entanglement are different from those of discrete-variable systems. We analyze these properties for two different systems, showing that the asymmetric system exhibits practical properties not found in the symmetric one
Prevalence and predictors of postdischarge antibiotic use following mastectomy
OBJECTIVESurvey results suggest that prolonged administration of prophylactic antibiotics is common after mastectomy with reconstruction. We determined utilization, predictors, and outcomes of postdischarge prophylactic antibiotics after mastectomy with or without immediate breast reconstruction.DESIGNRetrospective cohort.PATIENTSCommercially insured women aged 18–64 years coded for mastectomy from January 2004 to December 2011 were included in the study. Women with a preexisting wound complication or septicemia were excluded.METHODSPredictors of prophylactic antibiotics within 5 days after discharge were identified in women with 1 year of prior insurance enrollment; relative risks (RR) were calculated using generalized estimating equations.RESULTSOverall, 12,501 mastectomy procedures were identified; immediate reconstruction was performed in 7,912 of these procedures (63.3%). Postdischarge prophylactic antibiotics were used in 4,439 procedures (56.1%) with immediate reconstruction and 1,053 procedures (22.9%) without immediate reconstruction (P<.001). The antibiotics most commonly prescribed were cephalosporins (75.1%) and fluoroquinolones (11.1%). Independent predictors of postdischarge antibiotics were implant reconstruction (RR, 2.41; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.23–2.60), autologous reconstruction (RR, 2.17; 95% CI, 1.93–2.45), autologous reconstruction plus implant (RR, 2.11; 95% CI, 1.92–2.31), hypertension (RR, 1.05; 95% CI, 1.00–1.10), tobacco use (RR, 1.07; 95% CI, 1.01–1.14), surgery at an academic hospital (RR, 1.14; 95% CI, 1.07–1.21), and receipt of home health care (RR, 1.11; 95% CI, 1.04–1.18). Postdischarge prophylactic antibiotics were not associated with SSI after mastectomy with or without immediate reconstruction (bothP>.05).CONCLUSIONSProphylactic postdischarge antibiotics are commonly prescribed after mastectomy; immediate reconstruction is the strongest predictor. Stewardship efforts in this population to limit continuation of prophylactic antibiotics after discharge are needed to limit antimicrobial resistance.Infect Control Hosp Epidemiol2017;38:1048–1054</jats:sec
Quantum field effects in coupled atomic and molecular Bose-Einstein condensates
This paper examines the parameter regimes in which coupled atomic and
molecular Bose-Einstein condensates do not obey the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.
Stochastic field equations for coupled atomic and molecular condensates are
derived using the functional positive-P representation. These equations
describe the full quantum state of the coupled condensates and include the
commonly used Gross-Pitaevskii equation as the noiseless limit. The model
includes all interactions between the particles, background gas losses,
two-body losses and the numerical simulations are performed in three
dimensions. It is found that it is possible to differentiate the quantum and
semiclassical behaviour when the particle density is sufficiently low and the
coupling is sufficiently strong.Comment: 4 postscript figure
The protein import apparatus of chloroplasts
Routing of cytosolically synthesized precursor proteins into chloroplasts is a specific process which involves a multitude of soluble and membrane components. In this review we wil1 focus on early events of the translocation pathway of nuclear coded plastidic precursor proteins and compare import routes for polypeptide of the outer chloroplast envelope to that of internal chloroplast compartments. A number of proteins housed in the chloroplast envelopes have been implied to be involved in the translocation process, but so far a certain function has not been assigned to any of these proteins. The only exception could be an envelope localized hsc 70 homologue which could retain the import competence of a precursor protein in transit into the organelle
Incidence of surgical site infection following mastectomy with and without immediate reconstruction using private insurer claims data
OBJECTIVE: The National Healthcare Safety Network classifies breast operations as clean procedures with an expected 1–2% surgical site infection (SSI) incidence. We assessed differences in SSI incidence following mastectomy with and without immediate reconstruction in a large, geographically diverse population. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. PATIENTS: Commercially-insured women aged 18–64 years with ICD-9-CM procedure or CPT-4 codes for mastectomy from 1/1/2004–12/31/2011. METHODS: Incident SSIs within 180 days after surgery were identified by ICD-9-CM diagnosis codes. The incidence of SSI after mastectomy +/− immediate reconstruction was compared by the chi-square test. RESULTS: From 2004–2011, 18,696 mastectomy procedures among 18,085 women were identified, with immediate reconstruction in 10,836 (58%) procedures. The 180-day incidence of SSI following mastectomy with or without reconstruction was 8.1% (1,520/18,696). Forty-nine percent of SSIs were identified within 30 days post-mastectomy, 24.5% between 31–60 days, 10.5% between 61–90 days, and 15.7% between 91–180 days. The incidence of SSI was 5.0% (395/7,860) after mastectomy-only, 10.3% (848/8,217) after mastectomy plus implant, 10.7% (207/1,942) after mastectomy plus flap, and 10.3% (70/677) after mastectomy plus flap and implant (p<0.001). The SSI risk was higher after bilateral compared with unilateral mastectomy with (11.4% vs. 9.4%, p=0.001) and without (6.1% vs. 4.7%, p=0.021) immediate reconstruction. CONCLUSIONS: SSI incidence was two-fold higher after mastectomy with immediate reconstruction than after mastectomy alone. Only 49% of SSIs were coded within 30 days after operation. Our results suggest stratification by procedure type will facilitate comparison of SSI rates after breast operations between facilities

Late Triassic-earliest Jurassic geomagnetic polarity reference sequence from cyclic continental sediments of the Newark rift basin
The global nature of geomagnetic polarity reversals has made magnetostratigraphy an essential tool for precise correlation between widely distributed sections of rocks of different lithological and biotic facies. The best documented history of geomagnetic polarity reversals is for the Jurassic to Recent and is based on the analysis of numerous marine magnetic anomaly profiles from the global ocean (e.g., Cande and Kent, 1992; Gradstein et al., 1994). The relative spacing of polarity intervals established from the anomaly patterns is calibrated in time by correlation to magnetostratigraphic sections with biostratigraphy, radiometric dates, and cyclostratigraphy. Because of the absence of seafloor and hence marine magnetic anomalies, a precise geomagnetic polarity reference scale for pre-Jurassic time has been more difficult to develop. There has already been significant progress made for the Late Triassic by assembling relatively condensed or discontinuous marine (e.g., Gallet et al., 1992; 1993) and continental (e.g.. Molina-Garza et at., 1991) sedimentary sections, but thick, continuous magnetostratigraphic sections with good chronostratigraphic control are needed to construct a high resolution reference scale
