Characterization of Desulfovibrio fructosovorans sp. nov.

Desulfovibrio strain JJ isolated from estuarine sediment differed from all other described Desulfovibrio species by the ability to degrade fructose. The oxidation was incomplete, leading to acetate production. Fructose, malate and fumarate were fermented mainly to succinate and acetate in the absence of an external electron acceptor. The pH and temperature optima for growth were 7.0 and 35° C respectively. Strain JJ was motile by means of a single polar flagellum. The DNA base composition was 64.13% G+C. Cytochrome c3 and desulfoviridin were present. These characteristics established the isolate as a new species of the genus Desulfovibrio, and the name Desulfovibrio fructosovorans is proposed

Description of a quantum convolutional code

We describe a quantum error correction scheme aimed at protecting a flow of quantum information over long distance communication. It is largely inspired by the theory of classical convolutional codes which are used in similar circumstances in classical communication. The particular example shown here uses the stabilizer formalism, which provides an explicit encoding circuit. An associated error estimation algorithm is given explicitly and shown to provide the most likely error over any memoryless quantum channel, while its complexity grows only linearly with the number of encoded qubits.Comment: 4 pages, uses revtex4. Complementarity Endures: No Firewall for an Infalling Observer

We argue that the complementarity picture, as interpreted as a reference frame change represented in quantum gravitational Hilbert space, does not suffer from the "firewall paradox" recently discussed by Almheiri, Marolf, Polchinski, and Sully. A quantum state described by a distant observer evolves unitarily, with the evolution law well approximated by semi-classical field equations in the region away from the (stretched) horizon. And yet, a classical infalling observer does not see a violation of the equivalence principle, and thus a firewall, at the horizon. The resolution of the paradox lies in careful considerations on how a (semi-)classical world arises in unitary quantum mechanics describing the whole universe/multiverse.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure; clarifications and minor revisions; v3: a small calculation added for clarification; v4: some corrections, conclusion unchange
