Comparison of methods for curvature estimation from volume fractions

This paper evaluates and compares the accuracy and robustness of curvature estimation methods for three-dimensional interfaces represented implicitly by discrete volume fractions on a Cartesian mesh. The height function (HF) method is compared to three paraboloid fitting methods: fitting to the piecewise linear interface reconstruction centroids (PC), fitting to the piecewise linear interface reconstruction volumetrically (PV), and volumetrically fitting (VF) the paraboloid directly to the volume fraction field. The numerical studies presented in this work find that while the curvature error from the VF method converges with second-order accuracy as with the HF method for static interfaces represented by exact volume fractions, the PV method best balances low curvature errors with low computational cost for dynamic interfaces when the interface reconstruction and advection are coupled to a two-phase Navier-Stokes solver

A brave new building : réédition expérimentale et design d'information

Mots‐clĂ©s: formation Ă  l’enseignement, enseignement supĂ©rieur, programme, compĂ©tences In response to a review of Quebec teacher education programs for kindergarten and elementary schools, this article examines the impact on program structure of new guidelines emphasizing the development of professional competency. An analysis of course descriptions in 12 Quebec universities shows that, in spite of calls for les frag‐ mentation, the program structure is still divided into small components and organ‐ ized according to discipline. The results show major variations across institutions in the weighting on various kinds of activities and reveal that many courses focussing on intervention show a kind of content hybridization that is closer to the logic of com‐ petency development.Key words: teacher education, higher education, program, competencies

Direct comparison of Eulerian–Eulerian and Eulerian–Lagrangian simulations for particle‐laden vertical channel flow

Particle‐laden flows in a vertical channel were simulated using an Eulerian–Eulerian, Anisotropic Gaussian (EE‐AG) model. Two sets of cases varying the overall mass loading were done using particle sizes corresponding to either a large or small Stokes number. Primary and turbulent statistics were extracted from these results and compared with counterparts collected from Eulerian–Lagrangian (EL) simulations. The statistics collected from the small Stokes number particle cases correspond well between the two models, with the EE‐AG model replicating the transition observed using the EL model from shear‐induced turbulence to relaminarization to cluster‐induced turbulence as the mass loading increased. The EE‐AG model was able to capture the behavior of the EL simulations only at the largest particle concentrations using the large Stokes particles. This is due to the limitations involved with employing a particle‐phase Eulerian model (as opposed to a Lagrangian representation) for a spatially intermittent system that has a low particle number concentration.Peer Reviewedhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/155968/1/aic16230_am.pdfhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/155968/2/aic16230.pd
