    Principal components of quiet time temporal variability of equatorial and low-latitude geomagnetic fields

    Diurnal variations of the horizontal component of the geomagnetic field ΔH on International Quiet days of 1999–2012, measured hourly at two stations in the same longitude zone in the Northern Hemisphere, near and away from the dip equator, have been subjected to principal component analysis. This technique is also applied to the difference ΔHEEJ of ΔH at these two stations, which is attributed to the equatorial electrojet (EEJ). The first three principal components, PC1–PC3, account for 91–96% of the variances in the data. Maximum contribution to the quiet day variations in ΔH around its peak in the morning hours at both the stations, and in the EEJ, comes from the day-to-day variation of the amplitude of PC1. Patterns of day-to-day variations of PC1 amplitudes for the equatorial station and the EEJ are essentially semiannual modulated by solar EUV flux, superimposed on a longer timescale solar EUV flux-dependent trend. Contributions from PC2 and to a lesser extent from PC3 are seen to be responsible for the absence of semiannual variations in ΔH in the afternoon hours at the equatorial station. Distribution of amplitudes of PC2 and PC3 for ΔHEEJ for weak electrojet days shows seasonal features in accordance with greater occurrence of afternoon (morning) counter electrojet during June (December) solstice. During the extended solar minimum, PC3 amplitudes for ΔH at the equatorial station and for the EEJ display annual variation. Possible sources for these seasonal features in the variations of equatorial ΔH are discussed

    Stroke prevalence amongst sickle cell disease patients in Nigeria: a multi-centre study

    Background: Stroke is a life-changing, debilitating complication of sickle cell disease (SCD). Previous studies had recorded high stroke prevalence amongst this group of patients. Nigeria has a large population of people affected by this condition and this study aims to assess the stroke prevalence in this large population.Methodology: Stroke prevalence data from 14 physicians working in 11 tertiary health centres across the country was collated by doctors using the sickle cell registers and patient case notes. This data was then collated and used to obtain the overall stroke prevalence in adult and children.Results: The stroke prevalence in sickle cell disease patients in Nigeria was observed to be 12.4 per 1000 patients. Prevalence in the adult patients was 17.7 per 1000 patients and 7.4 per 1000 patients in children. Twenty three percent of the affected patients had more than stroke episode.Conclusion: The stroke prevalence in Nigeria is lower than previously recorded rates and further studies will be required to investigate other factors which may play a role.Keywords: sickle cell, stroke, Nigeria, prevalenc

    Quantification of Heavy Metals and Pesticide Residues in Widely Consumed Nigerian Food Crops Using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) and Gas Chromatography (GC)

    More still needs to be learned regards the relative contamination of heavy metals and pesticide residues, particularly those found in widely consumed Nigerian food crops like cereals, vegetables, and tubers. In this current study, the heavy metals and pesticide residues detectable in widely consumed Nigerian food crops were respectively quantified using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and gas chromatography (GC). Specifically, the widely consumed Nigerian food crops included cereals (rice, millet, and maize), legume (soybean), tubers (yam and cassava), as well as leaf (fluted pumpkin, Amaranthus leaf, waterleaf, and scent leaf) and fruit vegetables (okro, cucumber, carrot, and watermelon). Results showed that the detected heavy metals included arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), iron (Fe), lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), mercury (Hg), and nickel (Ni), whereas the pesticide residues included Aldrin, Carbofuran, g-chlordane, Chlorpyrifos, DichloroBiphenyl, Dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (DDD), Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), Dichlorvos, Endosulfan, Heptachlor, Hexachlorobenzene (HCB), Isopropylamine, Lindane, t-nonachlor, and Profenofos. Across the studied food crops, the concentrations of heavy metals and pesticides were varied, with different trends as they largely fell below the established maximum permissible limits, and with some exceptions. Our findings suggest there could be a somewhat gradual decline in the concentration of the heavy metals and pesticide residues of these studied food crops when compared to previously published reports specific to Nigeria. To help substantiate this observation and supplement existing information, further investigations are required into the concentration of these heavy metals and pesticide residues specific to these studied food crops at other parts of the country

    Is there still yaws in Nigeria? Active case search in endemic areas of southern Nigeria.

    BackgroundYaws is a disease caused by the bacteria Treponema pallidum subspecies pertenue, which is most commonly seen among children below 15 years. In the twentieth century yaws was endemic in Nigeria but eradication strategies markedly reduced the disease burden. Currently there is minimal data on the ongoing transmission of yaws in Nigeria, despite reports of confirmed yaws cases in neighbouring West African countries.MethodsWe conducted both community and school-based active yaws case search among school-aged children in southeast Nigeria. Children were screened by trained community volunteers. Suspected yaws cases were clinically reviewed and tested using rapid diagnostic serological tests.ResultsBetween February and May 2021, up to 28 trained community volunteers screened a total of 105,015 school children for yaws. Overall, 7,706 children with various skin lesions were identified. Eight (8) suspected cases of yaws were reported, reviewed and screened, but none was confirmed using rapid diagnostic tests. The four most common skin conditions identified were scabies (39%), papular urticaria (29%), tinea corporis (14%) and tinea capitis (12%).ConclusionsNo case of yaws was confirmed in this large population of children in south-east Nigeria. Continuous community awareness and yaws case finding activities have been recommended across Nigeria
