Copyright (c) 2009 Springer The original publication is available at www.springerlink.comThe surface modification of kaolinite to introduce the adsorption sites for anionic species was reported. The introduction of an anion exchange site was as follows; intercalation of 2-aminoethanol into kaolinite by using dimethyl sulfoxide-kaolinite intercalation compound as a precursor and subsequent hydrochlorination of 2-aminoethanol-kaolinite in 1,4-dioxane. The hydrochlorination of 2-aminoethanol-kaolinite was confirmed by the increase in the basal spacing (0.2 nm, corresponding to the diameter of chlorine) and the appearance of the infrared absorption bands due to ammonium groups. The modified kaolinite adsorbed an anionic dye, tetrakis(p-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin, from a N,N-dimethylformamide solution. Initial slope of the adsorption isotherm of tetrakis(p-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin on the hydrochlorinated 2-aminoethanol-kaolinite was steep, showing strong adsorbate-adsorbent interactions. The gallery height after the adsorption of tetrakis(p-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin was close to the thickness of the porphyrin ring, suggesting that tetrakis(p-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin was intercalated as a monomolecular layer and that chlorine simultaneously deintercalated.ArticleJOURNAL OF POROUS MATERIALS. 16(6):623-629 (2009)journal articl

    Photochromic Intercalation Compounds

Photochromism of intercalation compounds has been investigated so far. Starting from fundamental studies on the photochromic reactions of the dyes in the presence of layered materials, the precise design of the nanostructures of intercalation compounds toward controlled photochemical reactions and the creation of novel photoresponsive supramolecular systems based on layered solids have been a topic of interests. Various layered materials with different surface chemistries have been used as hosts for the controlled orientation, and aggregation of the intercalated dyes and the states of the intercalated guests affected photoresponses. Molecular design of the photochromic dyes has also been conducted in order to organize them on layered solids with the desired manner. On the other hand, layered solids with such functions as semiconducting and magnetic have been examined to host photochromic dyes for the photoresponsive changes in the materials' properties.ArticlePHOTOFUNCTIONAL LAYERED MATERIALS. 166: 177-211 (2015)journal articl

Concentration of 2-phenylphenol by organoclays from aqueous sucrose solution

The adsorption of 2-phenylphenol, which is an antifungal agent, onto organically modified clay from aqueous sucrose solution was investigated. 2-Phenylphenol was effectively adsorbed on neostigmine-modified smectites and octadecyltrimethylammoniurh modified smectites even in the presence of sucrose in the starting aqueous solution. Two smectites (a natural montmorillonite, Kunipia F, and a synthetic saponite, Sumecton SA) were used to find clay minerals with lower layer charge density gave larger adsorption capacity for 2-phenylphenol. The result showed the potential application of the organically modified clays to remove 2-phenylphenol from orange extracts. Influence of oxidative stress and effect of topical application of α-tocopherol on wound healing in a diabetic animal model

Background: Understanding mechanisms involved in development of diabetes mellitus-associated ulcers is vital to pioneering alternative care approaches. This study aimed to establish effects of oxidative stress (OS) and α-tocopherol’s effect on diabetic wound healing. Methods: Using two animal experimental designs surgical wounds were created in 4 groups of 9-week-old diabetic and non-diabetic rats. OS was induced through antioxidant enzyme inhibition. In experiment-1 wounds were allowed to heal. In experiment-2 varying concentrations of topical α-tocopherol and/or the ointment-base were administered to diabetic animal wounds. Intermittent comparison of wound morphology, histology and local and systemic OS parameters was done. Results: Irrespective of diabetic state, OS was associated with delayed wound size reduction and poor granulation-tissue collagen deposition. Delayed and subdued local glutathione peroxidase activity in response to wounding and OS induction was more pronounced in diabetic animals. Diabetic animals also showed higher serum malondialdehyde levels regardless of OS induction. Topical application of α-tocopherol was associated with denser wound granulation tissue collagen deposition but could not affect serum malondialdehyde levels. Conclusions: OS interferes with wound healing especially collagen deposition and the effect is more pronounced in a diabetic state. Topical α-tocopherol can improve collagen deposition in diabetic wounds but cannot counteract systemic OS, therefore combining systemic and local antioxidant supplementation has potential for use in DFU care

A patient with a primary malignant lymphoma surrounding the female urethra is reported. Despite the good response of the primary tumor to radiotherapy, the patient died shortly after diagnosis due to disseminated disease. We reviewed 16 cases of this rare entity reported previously

Effective Single Twymeeg Administration for Elderly Patient with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D), Arthralgia and Depression as Common Medical Problems

Background: Imeglimin (Twymeeg) has been effective for patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Case Presentation: The patient is an 82-year-old female with T2D, arthralgia, and depression. Results: She was given duloxetine hydrochloride (Cymbalta) and Twymeeg, leading to improved symptoms of low back pain (LBP), knee osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, depression, and possible mild cognitive impairment (MCI). HbA1c decreased from 8.8% to 7.1% for 4 months with a single administration of Twymeeg 2000mg/day. Discussion: In recent clinical practice, elderly cases often tend to have simultaneously these problems, which are medical and social crucial problems. Twymeeg and Cymbalta may be indispensable agents for future practice

Improvement of Translation Accuracy for the Outlines of Japanese Statutes by Splitting Parenthesized Expressions

    Get PDF
To globally share Japanese legal information, we translate the Outlines of Japanese statutes. These outlines are the official summaries of Japanese statutes and are useful to quickly understand their contents. In a previous statistical machine translation system for the outlines, we found that the training corpus consisted of both statutes and their outlines, including many long sentences that reduced the translation quality. To solve this problem, we shortened the length of sentences and focused on parenthesized expressions. In this paper, we propose a translation method that splits off parenthesized expressions from the sentences. Experimental result shows the effectiveness of our method

Practical Effects of Oral Twymeeg for Type 2 Diabetes (T2d) Patient with Special Habit Taking Much Carbs

Background: Oral semaglutide (imeglimin) has been prescribed for patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) as Twymeeg. Case presentation: The patient is 77-year-old male with hypertension, previous cerebral vascular accident (CVA). He continued unbalanced meal with preference of much carbohydrate. In Sept 2021, he became diabetic with HbA1c 8.8%. Results: Imeglimin 2000mg/day was started improving to 6.7% for 2 months. Discussion: Complete blood count (CBC) showed decreased Hb and increased MCV, suggesting macrocytic anemia for lack of vegetables. Much carbohydrate intake may bring T2D. Remarkable diabetic improvement may be from dual mechanisms for increasing insulin secretion and decreasing insulin resistance
