Synthesis of 1-(pyridyl, quinolyl, and isoquinolyl)azulenes by Reissert-Henze type reaction

    Get PDF
Azulene derivatives reacted with N-oxide of several heterocycles in the presence of trifluoromethanesultonic anhydride (Tf(2)O) to afford 1-(pyridyl, quinolyl, and isoquinolyl)azulenes in good yield, respectively. In the case of the reaction with the 1-azulenyl methyl sulfide (12), 1,1'-biazulene derivative 13 was obtained under the similar reaction conditions. The first synthesis of unsymmetrical 1,3-di(pyridyl)azulene derivative was also established via our new preparation method following the electrophilic pyriclinylation using the reaction with pyridine in the presence of Tf(2)O.ArticleTETRAHEDRON LETTERS. 51(39):5127-5130 (2010)journal articl

A filamentous fungus, Pythium ultimum TROW var. ultimum, isolated from moribund moss colonies from Svalbard, northern islands of Norway

    Get PDF
A fungus, Pythium ultimum TROW var. ultimum, was isolated from colonies of moribund moss, Sanionia uncinata (HEDW.) LOESKE, in Svalbard. This is the first report of isolation of P. ultimum var. ultimum from the Arctic Zone. This fungus showed possible moss pathogenic activity. The taxonomic, morphological and ecological characteristics are described here. In addition, the mycelial growth of this isolate is compared with that of isolates from the Temperate Zone, and its physiological characteristics are discussed

Holes in the valence band of superconducting boron-doped diamond film studied by soft X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy

Carbon- and boron-2pp states of superconducting and non-superconducting boron-doped diamond samples are measured using soft X-ray emission and absorption spectroscopy. For the superconducting sample, a large density of hole states is observed in the valence band in addition to the states in the impurity band. The hole states in the valence band is located at about 1.3 eV below the valence band maximum regardless of the doping level, which cannot be interpreted within a simple rigid band model. Present experimental results, combined with the first principles calculations, suggest that superconductivity is to be attributed to the holes in the valence band.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Symmetrical Skin Lesions on the Gluteal Region in a Patient with Anti-Laminin-332 Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid

    Get PDF
Mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP), previously called cicatricial pemphigoid, is a rare subepidermal immunobullous disorder that primarily affects the mucous membranes (1,2). MMP is divided into two major subtypes, anti-BP180-type MMP and anti-laminin-332 (previously called laminin 5 or epiligrin) MMP. Anti-laminin-332 MMP is known to be associated with malignant tumors (3), which may cause overexpression of autoantibodies and induce autoimmunity to laminin-332 (4). MMP primarily affects the mucous membranes, and widespread skin lesions are rare. In MMP, circumscribed skin lesions have been previously reported as occurring on the head, neck, and upper trunk (5). We report a case of anti-laminin-332 MMP presenting with symmetrical skin lesions characteristic of MMP on the weightbearing areas of the gluteal regio

    Angle-resolved photoemission study of MX-chain compound [Ni(chxn)2_2Br]Br2_2

We report on the results of angle-resolved photoemission experiments on a quasi-one-dimensional MXMX-chain compound [Ni(chxn)2_2Br]Br2_2 (chxn = 1RR,2RR-cyclohexanediamine), a one-dimensional Heisenberg system with S=1/2S=1/2 and J3600J \sim 3600 K, which shows a gigantic non-linear optical effect. A "band" having about 500 meV energy dispersion is found in the first half of the Brillouin zone (0kb/π<1/2)(0\le kb/\pi <1/2), but disappears at kb/π1/2kb / \pi \sim 1/2. Two dispersive features, expected from the spin-charge separation, as have been observed in other quasi-one-dimensional systems like Sr2_2CuO3_3, are not detected. These characteristic features are well reproduced by the dd-pp chain model calculations with a small charge-transfer energy Δ\Delta compared with that of one-dimensional Cu-O based compounds. We propose that this smaller Δ\Delta is the origin of the absence of clear spin- and charge-separation in the photoemission spectra and strong non-linear optical effect in [Ni(chxn)2_2Br]Br2_2.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

Incidence of Serious Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding in Patients Taking Non-steroidal Anti-infl ammatory Drugs in Japan

    Get PDF
Upper gastrointestinal bleeding is a major adverse event of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and co-administration of proton pump inhibitors and H2 receptor antagonists has been established as a means of preventing such an eff ect. However, the incidence of bleeding associated with NSAID-induced ulcers under conditions where such strong anti-acid agents are used for prevention has yet to be clarified. We aimed to determine the annual incidence of serious upper gastrointestinal ulcer bleeding among Japanese patients in whom NSAIDs were used in our hospital. Before commencing the study, we recommended to all the physicians in our hospital the best method for caring for NSAID users, focusing on the concomitant use of proton pump inhibitors or H2 receptor antagonists. We conducted a cohort study involving 17,270 patients for whom NSAIDs had been newly prescribed. Bleeding from gastric ulcers was observed in 8 of the 17,270 patients using NSAIDs (0.05%). The pooled incidence rate for bleeding was calculated as 2.65 (95% confidence interval, 2.56-2.74) and 1.29 (1.27-1.31) per 1,000 patient years for low-dose aspirin and non-aspirin NSAID users, respectively. None of the bleeding ulcer patients required blood transfusion or were in serious condition. In conclusion, gastric ulcer bleeding occurred in low-dose aspirin or non-aspirin NSAID users, but its incidence was low and outcomes were not serious when adequate preventive measures were taken.</p
