    UniSUF: a unified software update framework for vehicles utilizing isolation techniques and trusted execution environments

    Today’s vehicles depend more and more on software, and can contain over 100M lines of code controlling many safety-critical functions, such as steering and brakes. Increased complexity in software inherently increases the number of bugs affecting vehicle safety-critical functions. Consequently, software updates need to be applied regularly. Current research around vehicle software update solutions is lacking necessary details for a versatile, unified and secure approach that covers various update scenarios, e.g., over-the-air, with a workshop computer, at factory production or using a diagnostic update tool. We propose UniSUF, a Unified Software Update Framework for Vehicles, well aligned with automotive industry stakeholders. All data needed for a complete software update is securely encapsulated into one single file. This vehicle unique file can be processed in multitudes of update scenarios and executed without any external connectivity since all data is inherently secured. To the best of our knowledge, this comprehensive, versatile and unified approach cannot be found in previous research and is a contribution to an essential requirement within the industry for handling the increasing complexity related to vehicle software updates

    Anionic ordering in Pb₂Ti₄O₉F₂ revisited by nuclear magnetic resonance and density functional theory

This analysis revealed that F atoms predominantly occupy two of the six available inequivalent sites in a ratio of 73 : 27. DFT-based calculations explained the preference of F occupation on these sites and quantitatively reproduced the experimental occupation ratio, independent of the choice of functional. We concluded that the Pb atom's 6s2 lone pair may play a role (∼0.1 eV per f.u.) in determining the majority and minority F occupation sites with partial density of states and crystal orbital Hamiltonian population analyses applied to the DFT wave functions

    Effect of Zn substitution for Cu on Ca2x_{2-x}Nax_{x}CuO2_{2}Cl2_{2} near the hole concentration of 1/8 per Cu

    A weakening of superconductivity upon substitution of Cu by Zn (0.5~1 %) is observed in a high-T_c cuprate, Ca_{2-x}Na_xCuO2Cl2, near the hole concentration of 1/8 per Cu. The superconducting transition temperature and its volume fraction, estimated by magnetic susceptibility, exhibit a sizable anomaly for x=0.12~0.14, where the slowing down of Cu spin fluctuations below 5 K is demonstrated by muon spin relaxation experiments. These observations are in close resemblance to other typical cuprates including YBa2Cu3O_{7-d}, and Bi2Sr2Ca_{1-x}Y_xCu2O_{8+d}, providing further evidence that Zn-induced "stripe" correlation is a universal feature of high-T_c cuprate superconductors common to that of La_{2-x}A_{x}CuO4 (A=Ba, Sr).Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    A Histone-Like Protein of Mycobacteria Possesses Ferritin Superfamily Protein-Like Activity and Protects against DNA Damage by Fenton Reaction

    Iron is an essential metal for living organisms but its level must be strictly controlled in cells, because ferrous ion induces toxicity by generating highly active reactive oxygen, hydroxyl radicals, through the Fenton reaction. In addition, ferric ion shows low solubility under physiological conditions. To overcome these obstacles living organisms possess Ferritin superfamily proteins that are distributed in all three domains of life: bacteria, archaea, and eukaryotes. These proteins minimize hydroxyl radical formation by ferroxidase activity that converts Fe2+ into Fe3+ and sequesters iron by storing it as a mineral inside a protein cage. In this study, we discovered that mycobacterial DNA-binding protein 1 (MDP1), a histone-like protein, has similar activity to ferritin superfamily proteins. MDP1 prevented the Fenton reaction and protects DNA by the ferroxidase activity. The Km values of the ferroxidase activity by MDP1 of Mycobacterium bovis bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG-3007c), Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Rv2986c), and Mycobacterium leprae (ML1683; ML-LBP) were 0.292, 0.252, and 0.129 mM, respectively. Furthermore, one MDP1 molecule directly captured 81.4±19.1 iron atoms, suggesting the role of this protein in iron storage. This study describes for the first time a ferroxidase-iron storage protein outside of the ferritin superfamily proteins and the protective role of this bacterial protein from DNA damage

    Purpose: To report a rare case of idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) in a prepubertal pediatric patient. Case Report: The patient was an 11-year-old Japanese boy. Initially, an ophthalmologist found severe papilledema, and the patient was diagnosed with IIH. He was unresponsive to conservative therapy, and a ventriculoperitoneal shunt was inserted in the Neurosurgery Department because the visual impairment was severe. Twelve months after the shunt, the improvement in vision was limited due to optic disc atrophy. Conclusion: Ophthalmologists need to be more aware of II, especially in cases with severe papilledema that can lead to permanent reduction of vision
