Diabetes mellitus (DM) and obesity are associated with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and psychiatric disorders such as major depression. In this study, we investigated pathophysiological changes in the brains of female Spontaneously Diabetic Torii (SDT) fatty rats with diabetes and obesity. Brains of Sprague-Dawley (SD), SDT and SDT fatty rats were collected at 58 weeks of age. The parietal cortical thickness was measured and the number of pyramidal cells in the hippocampal cornu ammonis 1 and 3 (CA1 and CA3) and the number of granule cells in the dentate gyrus (DG) regions were counted. The area of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) positivity in CA1, CA3 and DG regions were measured. The parietal cortical thickness and the number of cells in CA3 and DG regions of SDT and SDT fatty rats did not show obvious changes. On the other hand, in the CA1 region, the number of cells in SDT rats and SDT fatty rats was significantly lower than that in SD rats, and that in SDT fatty rats was significantly lower than that in SDT rats. The GFAP-positive area in SDT fatty rats was significantly reduced compared to that in SD rats only in the DG region. Preliminarily result showed that the expression of S100a9, an inflammation-related gene, was increased in the brains of SDT fatty rats. These results suggest that female SDT fatty rat may exhibit central nervous system diseases due to obesity and DM

ABSTRACTBackground: To clarify the role of eosinophils in the pathogenesis of Kimura's disease and the values of measuring serum levels of eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) for monitoring disease activity might be very important, but there are few reports about this matter. Methods: A total 14 serum and 7 tissue samples from patients with Kimura's disease were studied. The concentrations of ECP and cytokines (interleukin-4 (IL-4), granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), and interleukin 5 (IL-5)) in sera from patients with Kimura's disease were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The density of eosinophils and the degree of activation of eosinophils in the tissue were also studied immunohistochemically. Results: The concentration of ECP in sera from patients with Kimura's disease was significantly higher than that in the control group (p<0.05). At the time of the remission, a significant decrease of ECP was observed. In interfollicular areas, most infiltrated eosinophils were positive for EG2 antibody (64.0-94.0%) and the mean percentage of EG2-positive eosinophils was 75.7%. The concentrations of IL-4, gM-CSF, and IL-5 in sera from patients with Kimura's disease were within normal ranges or below the detectable level in all sera examined. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that eosinophils play an important role in the pathogenesis of Kimura's disease and ECP may be used as an additional parameter of disease activity

In order to obtain information regarding the correlation between an electroencephalogram (EEG) and the state of a dolphin, we developed a noninvasive recording method of EEG of a bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and an extraction method of true-EEG (EEG) from recorded-EEG (R-EEG) based on a human EEG recording method, and then carried out frequency analysis during transportation by truck. The frequency detected in the EEG of dolphin during apparent awakening was divided conveniently into three bands (5–15, 15–25, and 25–40 Hz) based on spectrum profiles. Analyses of the relationship between power ratio and movement of the dolphin revealed that the power ratio of dolphin in a situation when it was being quiet was evenly distributed among the three bands. These results suggested that the EEG of a dolphin could be detected accurately by this method, and that the frequency analysis of the detected EEG seemed to provide useful information for understanding the central nerve activity of these animals

Mesenteric malignant lymphoma is comparative rare and has a poor prognosis in anadvanced case. Here, we report a patient with intestinal obstruction due to mesenteric malignantlymphoma treated successfully by gastrointestinal bypass operation, chemo-and radiotherapy.A 67-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of abdominal pain andnausea. An abdominal CT scan revealed a huge tumorous lesion with a soft tissue density, which involved descending colon. Since the symptoms was persisted after conservativetreatment, gastrointestinal bypass procedures were surgically formed. During the laparotomy,an open incisional biopsy was performed. Histological examination showed non-Hodgkinlymphoma with diffuse, large-sized and B-cell type. This case was classified into high-risk groupacccording to International Prognostic Index (IPI). After the operation, 5 courses of combinedchemotherapy (THP-COP) and 30 Gy radiation were performed. These multidisciplinarytreatment is considered to be very effective. Since then complete response and goodpatient’s QOL has been attained for these 3.5 years

Development of Heated Narrow Channels with Enhanced Liquid Supply in Forced Convective Boiling

Abstract Heat generation density from semiconductor devices increases with the rapid development of electronic technology. The cooling system using boiling two-phase phenomena attracts much attention because of its high heat removal potential. Most of heat transfer researches concerning the development of electronic devices are conducted for the cooling of small semiconductor chips, while there are limited numbers of innovative investigations for the cooling of a large area at extremely high heat flux larger than 2×10 6 W/m 2 . The technology can be applied to the cooling systems in space, e.g., cooling of laser medium in solar power satellites when solar energy is converted to laser power. To develop compact and high-performance cooling systems, a structure of narrow heated channel between parallel plates with auxiliary unheated channel was devised and tested by using water in three different kinds of experimental conditions. One of liquid supply method, where liquid is supplied to both of the main heated and the auxiliary unheated channel keeping the exit of the auxiliary channel closed, gives the highest CHF value at total volumetric flow rates more than 3.0×10 -5 m 3 /s and 2mm gap size of main heated channel

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can detect atherosclerotic lesions containing accumulations of ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxides (USPIO). Positing that improved USPIO with a higher affinity for atherosclerotic plaques would yield better plaque images, we performed MRI and histologic studies to compare the uptake of dextran- and mannan–dextran-coated USPIO (D-USPIO and DM-USPIO, respectively) by the atherosclerotic walls of rabbits. We intravenously injected atherosclerotic rabbits with DM-USPIO (n = 5) or D-USPIO (n = 5). Two rabbits were the controls. The doses delivered were 0.08 (dose 1) (n = 1), 0.4 (dose 2) (n = 1), or 0.8 (dose 3) (n = 3) mmol iron/Kg. The dose 3 rabbits underwent in vivo contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) before and 5 days after USPIO administration. Afterwards, all animals were euthanized, the aortae were removed and subjected to in vitro MRI study. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the aortic wall in the same region of interest (ROI) was calculated in both in vivo and in vitro studies. Histological assessment through measurement of iron-positive regions in Prussian blue-stained specimens showed that iron-positive regions were significantly larger in rabbits injected with DM- rather than D-USPIO (P < 0.05) for all doses. In vivo MRA showed that the SNR-reducing effect of DM- was greater than that of D-USPIO (P < 0.05). With in vitro MRI scans, SNR was significantly lower in rabbits treated with dose 2 of DM-USPIO compared with D-USPIO treatment (P < 0.05), and it tended to be lower at dose 3 (P < 0.1). In conclusion, we suggest that DM-USPIO is superior to D-USPIO for the study of atherosclerotic lesions in rabbits

Adhesion resulting from past abdominal surgeries account for the vast majority of small bowel obstruction cases. We report a rare case of strangulated ileal obstruction caused by an appendiceal adhesion to the ileum in which an aperture was formed that permitted herniation of ileal loops. CT demonstrated distended small bowel loops and collapsed cecum and ascending colon, which indicated small bowel obstruction. During laparoscopic surgery, the tip of the appendix was found to adhere to the ileum at 80 cm proximal to the ileo-cecal valve, forming an aperture that permitted herniation of the distal ileum, which resulted in a closed-loop ileal obstruction. Adhesion of the appendix as a cause of bowel obstruction and strangulation is rare, but physicians should be familiar with this pathological condition.61歳女。
