Mixing in the Presence of Isosinglet Quarks
We analyse transitions in the framework of a minimal extension
of the Standard Model where either a or a isosinglet quark is
added to the standard quark spectrum. In the case of a isosinglet
quark, it is shown that there is a significant region of parameter space where
mixing is sufficiently enhanced to be observed at the next
round of experiments. On the contrary, in the case of a isosinglet
quark, it is pointed out that obtaining a substancial enhancement of mixing, while complying with the experimental constraints on rare
kaon decays, requires a contrived choice of parameters.Comment: 10 pages plus four figures. The figures are not included but are

UV continuum emission and diagnostics of hydrogen-containing non-equilibrium plasmas
For the first time the emission of the radiative dissociation continuum of
the hydrogen molecule ( electronic
transition) is proposed to be used as a source of information for the
spectroscopic diagnostics of non-equilibrium plasmas. The detailed analysis of
excitation-deactivation kinetics, rate constants of various collisional and
radiative transitions and fitting procedures made it possible to develop two
new methods of diagnostics of: (1) the ground state
vibrational temperature from the relative intensity
distribution, and (2) the rate of electron impact dissociation
(d[\mbox{H_{2}}]/dt)_{\text{diss}} from the absolute intensity of the
continuum. A known method of determination of from relative
intensities of Fulcher- bands was seriously corrected and simplified
due to the revision of transition probabilities and cross sections of
electron impact excitation. General considerations are illustrated
with examples of experiments in pure hydrogen capillary-arc and H+Ar

Overview of the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer Mission
The Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer satellite observes light in the
far-ultraviolet spectral region, 905 - 1187 A with high spectral resolution.
The instrument consists of four coaligned prime-focus telescopes and Rowland
spectrographs with microchannel plate detectors. Two of the telescope channels
use Al:LiF coatings for optimum reflectivity from approximately 1000 to 1187 A
and the other two use SiC coatings for optimized throughput between 905 and
1105 A. The gratings are holographically ruled to largely correct for
astigmatism and to minimize scattered light. The microchannel plate detectors
have KBr photocathodes and use photon counting to achieve good quantum
efficiency with low background signal. The sensitivity is sufficient to examine
reddened lines of sight within the Milky Way as well as active galactic nuclei
and QSOs for absorption line studies of both Milky Way and extra-galactic gas
clouds. This spectral region contains a number of key scientific diagnostics,
including O VI, H I, D I and the strong electronic transitions of H2 and HD.Comment: To appear in FUSE special issue of the Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Air entrainment through free-surface cusps
In many industrial processes, such as pouring a liquid or coating a rotating
cylinder, air bubbles are entrapped inside the liquid. We propose a novel
mechanism for this phenomenon, based on the instability of cusp singularities
that generically form on free surfaces. The air being drawn into the narrow
space inside the cusp destroys its stationary shape when the walls of the cusp
come too close. Instead, a sheet emanates from the cusp's tip, through which
air is entrained. Our analytical theory of this instability is confirmed by
experimental observation and quantitative comparison with numerical simulations
of the flow equations
Weak Decays Beyond Leading Logarithms
We review the present status of QCD corrections to weak decays beyond the
leading logarithmic approximation including particle-antiparticle mixing and
rare and CP violating decays. After presenting the basic formalism for these
calculations we discuss in detail the effective hamiltonians for all decays for
which the next-to-leading corrections are known. Subsequently, we present the
phenomenological implications of these calculations. In particular we update
the values of various parameters and we incorporate new information on m_t in
view of the recent top quark discovery. One of the central issues in our review
are the theoretical uncertainties related to renormalization scale ambiguities
which are substantially reduced by including next-to-leading order corrections.
The impact of this theoretical improvement on the determination of the
Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix is then illustrated in various cases.Comment: 229 pages, 32 PostScript figures (included); uses RevTeX, epsf.sty,

At the edge of intonation: the interplay of utterance-final F0 movements and voiceless fricative sounds
The paper is concerned with the 'edge of intonation' in a twofold sense. It focuses on utterance-final F0 movements and crosses the traditional segment-prosody divide by investigating the interplay of F0 and voiceless fricatives in speech production. An experiment was performed for German with four types of voiceless fricatives: /f/, /s/, /Ê/ and /x/. They were elicited with scripted dialogues in the contexts of terminal falling statement and high rising question intonations. Acoustic analyses show that fricatives concluding the high rising question intonations had higher mean centres of gravity (CoGs), larger CoG ranges and higher noise energy levels than fricatives concluding the terminal falling statement intonations. The different spectral-energy patterns are suitable to induce percepts of a high 'aperiodic pitch' at the end of the questions and of a low 'aperiodic pitch' at the end of the statements. The results are discussed with regard to the possible existence of 'segmental intonation' and its implication for F0 truncation and the segment-prosody dichotomy, in which segments are the alleged troublemakers for the production and perception of intonation
Mass-Matching in Higgsless
Modern extra-dimensional Higgsless scenarios rely on a mass-matching between
fermionic and bosonic KK resonances to evade constraints from precision
electroweak measurements. After analyzing all of the Tevatron and LEP bounds on
these so-called Cured Higgsless scenarios, we study their LHC signatures and
explore how to identify the mass-matching mechanism, the key to their
viability. We find singly and pair produced fermionic resonances show up as
clean signals with 2 or 4 leptons and 2 hard jets, while neutral and charged
bosonic resonances are visible in the dilepton and leptonic WZ channels,
respectively. A measurement of the resonance masses from these channels shows
the matching necessary to achieve . Moreover, a large single
production of KK-fermion resonances is a clear indication of compositeness of
SM quarks. Discovery reach is below 10 fb of luminosity for resonances
in the 700 GeV range.Comment: 28 pages, 18 figure
