Asymptotic Symmetry and the General Black Hole Solution in Ads_3 Gravity
We describe the Brown-Henneaux asymptotic symmetry of the general black holes
in the Chern-Simons gauge theory of the gauge group . We make it clear that the vector-like subgroup plays an essential role in describing the asymptotic symmetry
consistently. We find a quite general black hole solution in the
gravity theory. The solution is specified by an infinite number of conserved
quantities which constitute a family of mapping from to the gauge group.

Effect of multiple transverse modes in self-mixing sensors based on vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers
We investigate the effect of coexisting transverse modes on the operation of self-mixing sensors based on vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs). The effect of multiple transverse modes on the measurement of displacement and distance were examined by simulation and in laboratory experiment. The simulation model shows that the periodic change in the shape and magnitude of the self-mixing signal with modulation current can be properly explained by the different frequency-modulation coefficients of the respective transverse modes in VCSELs. The simulation results are in excellent agreement with measurements performed on single-mode and multimode VCSELs and on self-mixing sensors based on these VCSELs
Single-filament Composite MgB2/SUS Ribbons by Powder-In-Tube Process
We report the successful fabrication of single-filament composite MgB2/SUS
ribbons, as an ultra-robust conductor type, employing the powder-in-tube (PIT)
process, by swaging and cold rolling only. The remarkable transport critical
current (Ic) of the non-sintered MgB2/SUS ribbon has observed, as an unexpected
result. Transport critical currents Ic ~ 316 A at T = 4.2 K and Ic ~ 82 A at T
= 20 K were observed at self-field, for the non-sintered composite MgB2/SUS
ribbon. In addition, the persistent current density Jp values, that were
estimated by Bean formula, were more than ~ 7  105 A/cm2 at T = 5 K,
and ~ 1.2  105 A/cm2 at T = 30 K, for the sintered composite MgB2/SUS
ribbon, at H = 0 G.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
Geometric Transition versus Cascading Solution
We study Vafa's geometric transition and Klebanov - Strassler solution from
various points of view in M-theory. In terms of brane configurations, we show
the detailed equivalences between the two models. In some limits, both models
have an alternative realization as fourfolds in M-theory with appropriate
G-fluxes turned on. We discuss some aspects of the fourfolds including how to

The holographic superconductors in higher-dimensional AdS soliton
We explore the behaviors of the holographic superconductors at zero
temperature for a charged scalar field coupled to a Maxwell field in
higher-dimensional AdS soliton spacetime via analytical way. In the probe
limit, we obtain the critical chemical potentials increase linearly as a total
dimension grows up. We find that the critical exponent for condensation
operator is obtained as 1/2 independently of , and the charge density is
linearly related to the chemical potential near the critical point.
Furthermore, we consider a slightly generalized setup the
Einstein-Power-Maxwell field theory, and find that the critical exponent for
condensation operator is given as in terms of a power parameter
of the Power-Maxwell field, and the charge density is proportional to the

Time and Amplitude of Afterpulse Measured with a Large Size Photomultiplier Tube
We have studied the afterpulse of a hemispherical photomultiplier tube for an
upcoming reactor neutrino experiment. The timing, the amplitude, and the rate
of the afterpulse for a 10 inch photomultiplier tube were measured with a 400
MHz FADC up to 16 \ms time window after the initial signal generated by an LED
light pulse. The time and amplitude correlation of the afterpulse shows several
distinctive groups. We describe the dependencies of the afterpulse on the
applied high voltage and the amplitude of the main light pulse. The present
data could shed light upon the general mechanism of the afterpulse.Comment: 11 figure
Photoemission and x-ray absorption study of MgC_(1-x)Ni_3
We investigated electronic structure of MgC_(1-x)Ni_3 with photoemission and
x-ray absorption spectroscopy. Both results show that overall band structure is
in reasonable agreement with band structure calculations including the
existence of von Hove singularity (vHs)near E_F. However, we find that the
sharp vHs peak theoretically predicted near the E_F is substantially
suppressed. As for the Ni core level and absorption spectrum, there exist the
satellites of Ni 2p which have a little larger energy separation and reduced
intensity compared to the case of Ni-metal. These facts indicate that
correlation effects among Ni 3d electrons may be important to understand

RG flows from Spin(7), CY 4-fold and HK manifolds to AdS, Penrose limits and pp waves
We obtain explicit realizations of holographic renormalization group (RG)
flows from M-theory, from E^{2,1} \times Spin(7) at UV to AdS_4 \times
\tilde{S^7} (squashed S^7) at IR, from E^{2,1} \times CY4 at UV to AdS_4 \times
Q^{1,1,1} at IR, and from E^{2,1} \times HK (hyperKahler) at UV to AdS_4 \times
N^{0,1,0} at IR. The dual type IIA string theory configurations correspond to
D2-D6 brane systems where D6 branes wrap supersymmetric four-cycles. We also
study the Penrose limits and obtain the pp-wave backgrounds for the above
configurations. Besides, we study some examples of non-supersymmetric and

Spinning and rotating strings for N=1 SYM theory and brane constructions
We obtain spinning and rotating closed string solutions in AdS_5 \times
T^{1,1} background, and show how these solutions can be mapped onto rotating
closed strings embedded in configurations of intersecting branes in type IIA
string theory. Then, we discuss spinning closed string solutions in the UV
limit of the Klebanov-Tseytlin background, and also properties of classical
solutions in the related intersecting brane constructions in the UV limit. We
comment on extensions of this analysis to the deformed conifold background, and
in the corresponding intersecting brane construction, as well as its relation
to the deep IR limit of the Klebanov-Strassler solution. We briefly discuss on
the relation between type IIA brane constructions and their related M-theory

Risk of Bias Assessments and Evidence Syntheses for Observational Epidemiologic Studies of Environmental and Occupational Exposures: Strengths and Limitations.
BACKGROUND: Increasingly, risk of bias tools are used to evaluate epidemiologic studies as part of evidence synthesis (evidence integration), often involving meta-analyses. Some of these tools consider hypothetical randomized controlled trials (RCTs) as gold standards. METHODS: We review the strengths and limitations of risk of bias assessments, in particular, for reviews of observational studies of environmental exposures, and we also comment more generally on methods of evidence synthesis. RESULTS: Although RCTs may provide a useful starting point to think about bias, they do not provide a gold standard for environmental studies. Observational studies should not be considered inherently biased vs. a hypothetical RCT. Rather than a checklist approach when evaluating individual studies using risk of bias tools, we call for identifying and quantifying possible biases, their direction, and their impacts on parameter estimates. As is recognized in many guidelines, evidence synthesis requires a broader approach than simply evaluating risk of bias in individual studies followed by synthesis of studies judged unbiased, or with studies given more weight if judged less biased. It should include the use of classical considerations for judging causality in human studies, as well as triangulation and integration of animal and mechanistic data. CONCLUSIONS: Bias assessments are important in evidence synthesis, but we argue they can and should be improved to address the concerns we raise here. Simplistic, mechanical approaches to risk of bias assessments, which may particularly occur when these tools are used by nonexperts, can result in erroneous conclusions and sometimes may be used to dismiss important evidence. Evidence synthesis requires a broad approach that goes beyond assessing bias in individual human studies and then including a narrow range of human studies judged to be unbiased in evidence synthesis. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP6980
