    Experimental and numerical study of Pd/Ta and PdCu/Ta composites for thermocatalytic hydrogen permeation

    The development of stable and durable hydrogen (H2) separation technology is essential for the effective use of H2 energy. Thus, the use of H2 permeable membranes, made of palladium (Pd), has been extensively studied in the literature. However, Pd has considerable constraints in large-scale applications due to disadvantages such as very high cost and H2 embrittlement. To address these shortcomings, copper (Cu) and Pd were deposited on Ta to fabricate a composite H2 permeable membrane. To this end, first, Pd was deposited on a tantalum (Ta) support disk, yielding 7.4 × 10−8 molH2 m−1 s−1 Pa−0.5 of permeability. Second, a Cu–Pd alloy on a Ta support was synthesized via stepwise electroless plating and plasma sputtering to improve the durability of the membrane. The use of Cu is cost-effective compared with Pd, and the appropriate composition of the PdCu alloy is advantageous for long-term H2 permeation. Despite the lower H2 permeation of the PdCu/Ta membrane (than the Pd/Ta membrane), about two-fold temporal stability is achieved using the PdCu/Ta composite. The degradation process of the Ta support-based H2 permeable membrane is examined by SEM. Moreover, thermocatalytic H2 dissociation mechanisms on Pd and PdCu were investigated and are discussed numerically via a density functional theory study

    The First Very Long Baseline Interferometry Image of 44 GHz Methanol Maser with the KVN and VERA Array (KaVA)

    We have carried out the first very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) imaging of 44 GHz class I methanol maser (7_{0}-6_{1}A^{+}) associated with a millimeter core MM2 in a massive star-forming region IRAS 18151-1208 with KaVA (KVN and VERA Array), which is a newly combined array of KVN (Korean VLBI Network) and VERA (VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry). We have succeeded in imaging compact maser features with a synthesized beam size of 2.7 milliarcseconds x 1.5 milliarcseconds (mas). These features are detected at a limited number of baselines within the length of shorter than approximately 650 km corresponding to 100 Mlambda in the uv-coverage. The central velocity and the velocity width of the 44 GHz methanol maser are consistent with those of the quiescent gas rather than the outflow traced by the SiO thermal line. The minimum component size among the maser features is ~ 5 mas x 2 mas, which corresponds to the linear size of ~ 15 AU x 6 AU assuming a distance of 3 kpc. The brightness temperatures of these features range from ~ 3.5 x 10^{8} to 1.0 x 10^{10} K, which are higher than estimated lower limit from a previous Very Large Array observation with the highest spatial resolution of ~ 50 mas. The 44 GHz class I methanol maser in IRAS 18151-1208 is found to be associated with the MM2 core, which is thought to be less evolved than another millimeter core MM1 associated with the 6.7 GHz class II methanol maser.Comment: 19 pages, 3 figure

    Probiotics partially attenuate the severity of acute kidney injury through an immunomodulatory effect

    Background A healthy microbiome helps maintain the gut barrier and mucosal immune tolerance. Previously, we demonstrated that acute kidney injury (AKI) provoked dysbiosis, gut inflammation, and increased permeability. Here, we investigated the renoprotective effects of the probiotic Bifidobacterium bifidum BGN4 and the underlying mechanisms thereof. Methods C57BL/6 mice were subjected to bilateral renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) or sham operation. In the probiotic-treated group, BGN4 was administered by gavage once daily, starting 2 weeks before injury. Results Administration of BGN4 significantly increased gut microbiome diversity and prevented expansion of the Enterobacteriaceae and Bacteroidetes that were the hallmarks of AKI-induced dysbiosis. Further, BGN4 administration also significantly reduced other IRI-induced changes in the colon microenvironment, including effects on permeability, apoptosis of colon epithelial cells, and neutrophil and proinflammatory macrophage infiltration. Mononuclear cells co-cultured with BGN4 expressed significantly increased proportions of CD103+/CD11c+ and CD4+ CD25+ Treg cells, suggesting a direct immunomodulatory effect. BGN4 induced Treg expansion in colon, mesenteric lymph nodes (MNL), and kidney. BGN4 also reduced CX3CR1intermediateLy6Chigh monocyte infiltration and interleukin (IL)-17A suppression in the small intestine, which may have attenuated AKI severity, kidney IL-6 messenger RNA expression, and AKI-induced liver injury. Conclusion Prior supplementation with BGN4 significantly attenuated the severity of IRI and secondary liver injury. This renoprotective effect was associated with increased Foxp3 and reduced IL-17A expression in the colon, MNL, and kidney, suggesting that BGN4-induced immunomodulation might contribute to its renoprotective effects. Probiotics may therefore be a promising strategy to reduce AKI severity and/or remote organ injury

    Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Kinase 4 Promotes Vascular Calcification via SMAD1/5/8 Phosphorylation

    Vascular calcification, a pathologic response to defective calcium and phosphate homeostasis, is strongly associated with cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. In this study, we have observed that pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 4 (PDK4) is upregulated and pyruvate dehydrogenase complex phosphorylation is increased in calcifying vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) and in calcified vessels of patients with atherosclerosis, suggesting that PDK4 plays an important role in vascular calcification. Both genetic and pharmacological inhibition of PDK4 ameliorated the calcification in phosphate-treated VSMCs and aortic rings and in vitamin D3-treated mice. PDK4 augmented the osteogenic differentiation of VSMCs by phosphorylating SMAD1/5/8 via direct interaction, which enhances BMP2 signaling. Furthermore, increased expression of PDK4 in phosphate-treated VSMCs induced mitochondrial dysfunction followed by apoptosis. Taken together, our results show that upregulation of PDK4 promotes vascular calcification by increasing osteogenic markers with no adverse effect on bone formation, demonstrating that PDK4 is a therapeutic target for vascular calcification

    Molecular characterization of partial-open reading frames 1a and 2 of the human astroviruses in South Korea

    Human astroviruses (HAstVs) are among the major causes of gastroenteritis in South Korea. In this study, the partial regions of the open reading frame (ORF) 1a and ORF2 genes of HAstVs from gastroenteritis patients in nine hospitals were sequenced, and the molecular characterization of the viruses was revealed. 89 partial nucleotide sequences of ORF1a and 88 partial nucleotide sequences of ORF2 were amplified from 120 stool specimens. Phylogenetic analysis showed that most of the nucleotide sequences of ORF1a and ORF2 were grouped with HAstV type 1 but had evolutionary genetic distance compared with the reference sequences, such as the HAstV-1 prototype, Dresden strain, and Oxford strain. According to the phylogenetic analysis, some nucleotide sequences including SE0506041, SE0506043, and SE0506058, showed the discrepancy of the genotypes, but there was no proof of recombination among the HAstV types. In conclusion, this study showed that the dominant HAstV isolated from the Seoul metropolitan area in 2004-2005 was HAstV type 1, and that Korean HAstV-1 had the genetic distance in evolution compared with the reference sequences of HAstVs. Lots of nucleotide sequences of the ORF1a and ORF2 genes of HAstV will be useful for studying for the control and prevention of HAstV gastroenteritis in South Korea
