    An energy-based model of longitudinal splitting in unidirectional fiber-reinforced composites

    Unidirectional fiber-reinforced composites are often observed to fail in a longitudinal splitting mode in the fiber direction under far-field compressive loading with weak lateral confinement. An energy-based model is developed based on the principle of minimum potential energy and the evaluation of effective properties to obtain an analytical approximation to the critical stress for longitudinal splitting. The analytic estimate for the compressive strength is used to illustrate its dependence on material properties, surface energy, fiber volume fraction, fiber diameter, and lateral confining pressure. The predictions of the model show good agreement with available experimental data

    Study on the Levitation and Restoring Force Characteristics of the Improved HTS-permanent Magnet Hybrid Magnetic Bearing

    AbstractWe have developed the hybrid magnetic bearing using permanent magnets and high temperature bulk super conductor (HTS). In this system, the permanent magnet has ring type structure so that the permanent magnet and the HTS can be set to the stator. The pinning force of the HTS is used for the levitation and the guidance. Repulsive force of the permanent magnets was used in the conventional hybrid system. However the restoring force in the guidance direction of the conventional hybrid system decreases by the side slip force of the permanent magnets. In this research, attractive force of permanent magnets is used for increasing the load weight in the guidance direction.In this paper, influence of the hybrid system on the static characteristics of the rotor is studied. Three-dimensional numerical analysis of the linkage flux (in the levitation and the guidance direction) in the HTS is undertaken. The stator side permanent magnet increases the linkage flux of the levitation direction. Therefore in the hybrid system the linkage flux of the levitation direction increases. The levitation and restoring force of the rotor is measured. The levitation force of the hybrid system becomes smaller than that of the non-hybrid one by attractive force. The rotor in the hybrid system is supported by the pinning force and attractive force. The restoring force of the hybrid system becomes larger than that of the non-hybrid one because of increasing the linkage flux of the levitation direction

    Q344ter Mutation Causes Mislocalization of Rhodopsin Molecules That Are Catalytically Active: A Mouse Model of Q344ter-Induced Retinal Degeneration

    Q344ter is a naturally occurring rhodopsin mutation in humans that causes autosomal dominant retinal degeneration through mechanisms that are not fully understood, but are thought to involve an early termination that removed the trafficking signal, QVAPA, leading to its mislocalization in the rod photoreceptor cell. To better understand the disease mechanism(s), transgenic mice that express Q344ter were generated and crossed with rhodopsin knockout mice. Dark-reared Q344terrho+/− mice exhibited retinal degeneration, demonstrating that rhodopsin mislocalization caused photoreceptor cell death. This degeneration is exacerbated by light-exposure and is correlated with the activation of transducin as well as other G-protein signaling pathways. We observed numerous sub-micrometer sized vesicles in the inter-photoreceptor space of Q344terrho+/− and Q344terrho−/− retinas, similar to that seen in another rhodopsin mutant, P347S. Whereas light microscopy failed to reveal outer segment structures in Q344terrho−/− rods, shortened and disorganized rod outer segment structures were visible using electron microscopy. Thus, some Q344ter molecules trafficked to the outer segment and formed disc structures, albeit inefficiently, in the absence of full length wildtype rhodopsin. These findings helped to establish the in vivo role of the QVAPA domain as well as the pathways leading to Q344ter-induced retinal degeneration

    Symptomatic asymmetry in the first six months of life: differential diagnosis

    Asymmetry in infancy is a clinical condition with a wide variation in appearances (shape, posture, and movement), etiology, localization, and severity. The prevalence of an asymmetric positional preference is 12% of all newborns during the first six months of life. The asymmetry is either idiopathic or symptomatic. Pediatricians and physiotherapists have to distinguish symptomatic asymmetry (SA) from idiopathic asymmetry (IA) when examining young infants with a positional preference to determine the prognosis and the intervention strategy. The majority of cases will be idiopathic, but the initial presentation of a positional preference might be a symptom of a more serious underlying disorder. The purpose of this review is to synthesize the current information on the incidence of SA, as well as the possible causes and the accompanying signs that differentiate SA from IA. This review presents an overview of the nine most prevalent disorders in infants in their first six months of life leading to SA. We have discovered that the literature does not provide a comprehensive analysis of the incidence, characteristics, signs, and symptoms of SA. Knowledge of the presented clues is important in the clinical decision making with regard to young infants with asymmetry. We recommend to design a valid and useful screening instrument

    Dynamic compressive behavior of unidirectional E-glass/vinylester composites

    Results from an experimental investigation on the mechanical behavior of unidirectional fiber reinforced polymer composites (E-glass/vinylester) with 30%, 50% fiber volume fraction under dynamic uniaxial compression are presented. Specimens are loaded in the fiber direction using a servo-hydraulic material testing system for low strain rates and a Kolsky (split Hopkinson) pressure bar for high strain rates, up to 3000/s. The results indicate that the compressive strength of the composite increases with increasing strain rate. Post-test scanning electron microscopy is used to identify the failure modes. In uniaxial compression the specimens are split axially (followed by fiber kink band formation). Based on the experimental results and observations, an energy-based analytic model for studying axial splitting phenomenon in unidirectional fiber reinforced composites is extended to predict the compressive strength of these composites under dynamic uniaxial loading condition

    A micromechanical failure model for unidirectional fiber reinforced composites

    Results from a newly developed model for failure in unidirectional fiber reinforced composites based on fracture mechanics are presented. The model is based on (i) analysis of branch crack initiation from the tip of an initial microcrack embedded in an anisotropic material, which serves as a model for the fiber reinforced composite and (ii) evaluation of anisotropy in homogenized elastic material properties and fracture toughness. Based on this model, failure envelope, dominant initial flaw orientation and failure mode for unidirectional fiber reinforced composites under a wide range of stress states are predicted. Parametric study provides quantitative evaluation of the effect of various mechanical and physical properties on the failure behavior, and their influence on strength is identified. Results from the current model are compared with those of existing phenomenological models, which show reasonable agreement
