    Analysis of the Demagnetization Process of Nd-Fe-B Sintered Magnets at Elevated Temperatures by Magnetic Domain Observation Using a Kerr Microscope

    Magnetization reversal and its propagation in sintered Nd–Fe–B magnets were clearly observed at elevated temperatures up to 150 °C using a Kerr microscope, image processing, and photo editing. Simultaneous magnetization reversal in several grains along the easy axis direction occurred at elevated temperature, and the extent of simultaneous magnetization reversal increased with temperature. This indicates that reduction in the coercivity of Nd–Fe–B sintered magnets at elevated temperatures is attributable to decrease in anisotropy and insufficient pinning of domain walls at grain boundaries

    Novel Orbital Ordering induced by Anisotropic Stress in a Manganite Thin Film

    We performed resonant and nonresonant x-ray diffraction studies of a Nd0.5Sr0.5MnO3 thin film that exhibits a clear first-order transition. Lattice parameters vary drastically at the metal-insulator transition at 170K (=T_MI), and superlattice reflections appear below 140K (=T_CO). The electronic structure between T_MI and T_CO is identified as A-type antiferromagnetic with the d_{x2-y2} ferroorbital ordering. Below T_CO, a new type of antiferroorbital ordering emerges. The accommodation of the large lattice distortion at the first-order phase transition and the appearance of the novel orbital ordering are brought about by the anisotropy in the substrate, a new parameter for the phase control.Comment: 4pages, 4figure

    Polar Antiferromagnets Produced with Orbital-Order

    Polar magnetic states are realized in pseudocubic manganite thin films fabricated on high-index substrates, in which a Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion remains an active variable. Several types of orbital-orders were found to develop large optical second harmonic generation, signaling broken-inversion-symmetry distinct from their bulk forms and films on (100) substrates. The observed symmetry-lifting and first-principles calculation both indicate that the modified JT q2 mode drives Mn-site off-centering upon orbital order, leading to the possible cooperation of "Mn-site polarization" and magnetism.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    A Unit Commitment Model with Demand Response for the Integration of Renewable Energies

    The output of renewable energy fluctuates significantly depending on weather conditions. We develop a unit commitment model to analyze requirements of the forecast output and its error for renewable energies. Our model obtains the time series for the operational state of thermal power plants that would maximize the profits of an electric power utility by taking into account both the forecast of output its error for renewable energies and the demand response of consumers. We consider a power system consisting of thermal power plants, photovoltaic systems (PV), and wind farms and analyze the effect of the forecast error on the operation cost and reserves. We confirm that the operation cost was increases with the forecast error. The effect of a sudden decrease in wind power is also analyzed. More thermal power plants need to be operated to generate power to absorb this sudden decrease in wind power. The increase in the number of operating thermal power plants within a short period does not affect the total operation cost significantly; however the substitution of thermal power plants by wind farms or PV systems is not expected to be very high. Finally, the effects of the demand response in the case of a sudden decrease in wind power are analyzed. We confirm that the number of operating thermal power plants is reduced by the demand response. A power utility has to continue thermal power plants for ensuring supply-demand balance; some of these plants can be decommissioned after installing a large number of wind farms or PV systems, if the demand response is applied using an appropriate price structure.Comment: submitted to 2012 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meetin

    Orbital Ordering Structures in (Nd,Pr)0.5Sr0.5MnO3 Manganite Thin Films on Perovskite (011) Substrates

    Structural study of orbital-ordered manganite thin films has been conducted using synchrotron radiation, and a ground state electronic phase diagram is made. The lattice parameters of four manganite thin films, Nd0.5Sr0.5MnO3 (NSMO) or Pr0.5Sr0.5MnO3 (PSMO) on (011) surfaces of SrTiO3 (STO) or [(LaAlO3){0.3}(SrAl0.5Ta0.5O3){0.7}] (LSAT), were measured as a function of temperature. The result shows, as expected based on previous knowledge of bulk materials, that the films' resistivity is closely related to their structures. Observed superlattice reflections indicate that NSMO thin films have an antiferro-orbital-ordered phase as their low-temperature phase while PSMO film on LSAT has a ferro-orbital-ordered phase, and that on STO has no orbital-ordered phase. A metallic ground state was observed only in films having a narrow region of A-site ion radius, while larger ions favor ferro-orbital-ordered structure and smaller ions stabilize antiferro-orbital-ordered structure. The key to the orbital-ordering transition in (011) film is found to be the in-plane displacement along [0-1 1] direction.Comment: 19pages, 11 figure

    Developmental regulation of gene expression for the MPTPδ isoforms in the central nervous system and the immune system

    AbstractMPTPδ is a murine transmembrane protein tyrosine phosphatase which has three isoforms, types A–C, differing in the structure of the extracellular regions. In this study, we examined MPTPδ isoform expression in the brain and the immune system at discrete developmental or differentiation stages. RT-PCR analysis demonstrated that another isoform, type D, is transcribed from the MPTPδ gene. In the brain, only type D was expressed until postnatal day 7 (P7), but after P14, all four isoforms were detected. In contrast, the spleen, thymus and all the hematopoietic cell lines examined express only types B and C isoforms. An in situ hybridization study showed that MPTPδ mRNA is diffusely expressed throughout the spleen, but its expression in the thymus is restricted to the medullary region

    Enhanced dielectric response by disordered nanoscale/mesoscopic insulators

    Enhancement of the dielectric response of insulators by disorder is theoretically proposed, where the quantum interference of electronic waves through the nanoscale/mesoscopic system and its change due to external perturbations control the polarization. In the disordered case with all the states being localized, the resonant tunneling, which is topologically protected, plays a crucial role, and enhances the dielectric response by a factor 30~40 compared with the pure case.     Association between elevated serum transaminase and moderately increased albuminuria : a cross-sectional study in western Tokushima, Japan

    Background This study aimed to identify the factors relating to moderately increased albuminuria among middle-aged and older individuals in Japan. Methods We conducted specific health examinations in which we measured albuminuria levels, and administered a questionnaire survey to record participants’ lifestyles in western Tokushima Prefecture, Japan. A total of 1,660 people whose albuminuria was less than 300 mg/g creatinine (Cr) were analyzed. We divided participants into two groups—those with normal albuminuria ( 300 mg/gCr)—and compared their characteristics. To investigate all relevant factors, we conducted a multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results The moderately increased albuminuria group were significantly older and had, among them, significantly higher percentages of a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 25 kg/m2, diabetes, hypertension, and mild liver disorder (aspartate transaminase ≥ 31 U/L or alanine aminotransferase ≥ 31 U/L or gamma-glutamyl transferase ≥ 51 U/L). (p < 0.01) In a multivariate logistic regression analysis that used microalbuminuria as an independent variable, we found the adjusted odds ratio (AOR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) to be significantly higher among individuals with diabetes (AOR: 2.04, 95% CI: 1.40–2.99); hypertension (AOR: 1.90, 95% CI: 1.36–2.65); BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 (AOR: 1.76, 95% CI: 1.27–2.44); and mild liver disorder (AOR: 1.54, 95% CI: 1.10–2.18). Conclusions In addition to diabetes, hypertension, and BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2, this study found that among the middle-aged and older general population living in western Tokushima Prefecture, there were cases of mild liver disorder (elevated serum transaminase), which independently associated with moderately increased albuminuria. Therefore, in health checkups targeting the general population, there is a need to consider measuring albuminuria, even in those who have only mild liver dysfunction (health guidance level)
