    Manganese–calcium clusters supported by calixarenes

    The structure of the oxygen-evolving complex of photosystem II, which contains a cubane-like metal-oxo cluster incorporating four manganese (III,IV) cations, along with a calcium cation, has focussed attention on synthetic analogues of this cluster. Despite this activity, there are relatively few structurally characterised coordination clusters with this combination of metal cations. The calixarenes are synthetically versatile and well established cluster-supporting ligands, which to date have not been reported to support a calcium/manganese cluster. Here we report that p-t-butylthiacalix[4]arene supports CaMn2 and Ca2Mn2 clusters, whereas reactions of p-t-butylcalix[4]arene, p-t-butylsulfinylcalix[4]arene, and p-t-butylsulfonylcalix[4]arene, under the same conditions, produced only homometallic manganese complexes

    Evidence for field change in oral cancer based on cytokeratin expression.

    It was hypothesised that one may be able to visualise field changes, which are proposed to exist around tumours, as alterations in keratin intermediate filament protein expression. Standard immunohistochemical analysis using a panel of monoclonal anti-keratin antibodies was applied to fresh tissue sections to look for subtle changes in epithelial differentiation not visible in H&E sections. Such changes were observed in clinically normal epithelium from oral cancer patients, involving primarily substantial expression of keratins K8/K7 (using CAM 5.2) in the basal cells of 12 out of 34 biopsies, and also a trend towards a reduction in the complexity of keratin differentiation. Monitoring such changes may prove to be a valuable adjunct to conventional H&E staining if found to have prognostic and diagnostic significance

    Structural Variations in the Complete Series of Lanthanoid Complexes of a Calix[4]arene Trisamide

    Lanthanoid picrate (pic) complexes of 5,11,17,23-tetra-tert-butyl-25-hydroxy-26,27,28-tris(diethylcarbamoylmethoxy)calix[4]arene (LH) have been synthesised and structurally characterised, to complete this series for all lanthanoids (other than promethium). From cerium to lutetium, three structural types are observed: Type I, [Ln(L)(O,O'-pic)](pic), Ln = Ce-Dy; Type II, [Ln(L)(O-pic)](pic), Ln = Tb, Ho; Type III, [Ln(L)(HOEt)](pic)2, Ln = Er-Lu. With lanthanum, three different ten-coordinate complexes were characterised; [Ln(L)(O,O'-pic)(HOEt)](pic), [Ln(L)(O,O'-pic)(OH2)](pic), and [Ln(L)(O,O'-pic)(HOMe)](pic). The crystallisation of Type I and II observed for terbium shows that the stability of the different structures are sensitively poised at the transition points. Nevertheless, the structures show that the vacant space in the coordination sphere left by the trisamide L tends to reduce across the series as expected. It is occupied by a bidentate picrate anion and unidentate solvent molecule with lanthanum, a bidentate picrate anion for cerium to dysprosium (Type I), a unidentate picrate anion for terbium and holmium (Type II), and finally a unidentate solvent molecule from erbium to lutetium (Type III). The coordination number thus reduces from 10 to 8 across the series

    Phosphonate additives do not always inhibit crystallization

    This paper investigates crystal growth modifiers based on 1,3,5-substituted benzene derivatives. The results show that as expected, the phosphonated derivative inhibits calcite precipitation to a much greater degree than the analogous sulfonate. However, on barium sulfate, both molecules show some crystallization promotion behaviour, with the phosphonate being the more potent promoter overall. Thus, the functional group alone does not determine the impact the organic molecule will have on crystallization. This opens the way for additives that have dual purposes (inhibiting the crystallization of one phase while not impacting or promoting the crystallization of other phases)

    Body-wave tomographic imaging of the Turkana Depression: Implications for rift development and plume-lithosphere interactions

    The Turkana Depression, a topographically-subdued, broadly-rifted zone between the elevated East African and Ethiopian plateaus, disrupts the N–S, fault-bounded rift basin morphology that characterizes most of the East African Rift. The unusual breadth of the Turkana Depression leaves unanswered questions about the initiation and evolution of rifting between the Main Ethiopian and Eastern rifts. Hypotheses explaining the unusually broad, low-lying area include superposed Mesozoic and Cenozoic rifting and a lack of mantle lithospheric thinning and dynamic support. To address these issues, we have carried out the first body-wave tomographic study of the Depression’s upper mantle. Seismically-derived temperatures at 100 km depth exceed petrological estimates, suggesting the presence of mantle melt, although not as voluminous as the Main Ethiopian Rift, contributes to velocity anomalies. A NW–SE-trending high wavespeed band in southern Ethiopia at urn:x-wiley:15252027:media:ggge22580:ggge22580-math-0001200 km depth is interpreted as refractory Proterozoic lithosphere which has likely influenced the localization of both Mesozoic and Cenozoic rifting. At urn:x-wiley:15252027:media:ggge22580:ggge22580-math-0002100 km depth below the central Depression, a single localized low wavespeed zone is lacking. Only in the northernmost Eastern Rift and southern Lake Turkana is there evidence for focused low wavespeeds resembling the Main Ethiopian Rift, that bifurcate below the Depression and broaden approaching southern Ethiopia further north. These low wavespeeds may be attributed to melt-intruded mantle lithosphere or ponded asthenospheric material below lithospheric thin-spots induced by the region's multiple rifting phases. Low wavespeeds persist to the mantle transition zone suggesting the Depression may not lack mantle dynamic support in comparison to the two plateaus

    The Computational Complexity of Symbolic Dynamics at the Onset of Chaos

    In a variety of studies of dynamical systems, the edge of order and chaos has been singled out as a region of complexity. It was suggested by Wolfram, on the basis of qualitative behaviour of cellular automata, that the computational basis for modelling this region is the Universal Turing Machine. In this paper, following a suggestion of Crutchfield, we try to show that the Turing machine model may often be too powerful as a computational model to describe the boundary of order and chaos. In particular we study the region of the first accumulation of period doubling in unimodal and bimodal maps of the interval, from the point of view of language theory. We show that in relation to the ``extended'' Chomsky hierarchy, the relevant computational model in the unimodal case is the nested stack automaton or the related indexed languages, while the bimodal case is modeled by the linear bounded automaton or the related context-sensitive languages.Comment: 1 reference corrected, 1 reference added, minor changes in body of manuscrip

    The development of multiple phases of superposed rifting in the Turkana Depression, East Africa: evidence from receiver functions

    The Turkana Depression in Eastern Africa separates the elevated plateaus of East Africa to the south and Ethiopia-Yemen to the north. It remains unclear whether the Depression lacks dynamic mantle support, or if the entire East Africa region is dynamically supported and the Depression compensated isostatically by thinned crust. Also poorly understood is how Miocene-Recent extension has developed across the Depression, connecting spatially separated magmatic rift zones in Ethiopia and Kenya. Receiver function analysis is used to constrain Moho depth and bulk-crustal V P /V S ratio below new seismograph networks in the Depression, and on the northern Tanzania craton. Crustal thickness is ∼40 km below northern Uganda and 30–35 km below southern Ethiopia, but 20–30 km below most of the Depression, where mass-balance calculations reveal low elevations can be explained adequately by crustal thinning alone. Despite the fact that magmatism has occurred for 45 Ma across the Depression, more than 15 Ma before East African Rift (EAR) extension initiated, bulk crustal V P /V S across southern Ethiopia and the Turkana Depression (∼1.74) is similar to that observed in areas unaffected by Cenozoic rifting and magmatism. Evidence for voluminous lower crustal intrusions and/or melt, widespread below the Ethiopian rift and Ethiopian plateau to the north, is therefore lacking. These observations, when reviewed in light of high stretching factors (β ≤ 2.11), suggest Cenozoic extension has been dominated until recently by faulting and plate stretching, rather than magma intrusion, which is likely an incipient process, operating directly below seismically-active Lake Turkana. Early-stage EAR basins to the west of Lake Turkana, with associated stretching factors of β ≈ 2, formed in crust only moderately thinned during earlier rifting episodes. Conversely, ∼23 km-thick crust beneath the Kino Sogo Fault Belt (KSFB) has small offset faults and thin sedimentary strata, suggesting almost all of the observed stretching occurred in Mesozoic times. Despite the KSFB marking the shortest path between focused extensional zones to the north and south, seismicity and GPS data show that modern extension is localized below Lake Turkana to the west. Failed Mesozoic rift zones, now characterized by thinned crust and relatively refractory mantle lithosphere, are being circumnavigated, not exploited by EAR rifting

    Alfalfa Insect Management Studies 1971-77

    Three tests in southwestern Nebraska during 1971 and 1972 evaluated insecticides against the army cutworm. Adult alfalfa weevils did not damage new second growth alfalfa in a small plot study during a 3-year period (1973-1975) at Gothenburg, NE. However, excellent control of larval alfalfa weevils was obtained. These results indicated a need to establish economic threshold levels for the alfalfa weevil in Nebraska to prevent unnecessary use of insecticides. Four tests to control the alfalfa weevil with registered insecticides verified the efficacy of these materials under Nebraska conditions. A series of tests conducted during 1975 at the Mead Field Laboratory were designed to evaluate plant resistance, cultural practices and insecticides. The use of alfalfa varieties with resistance to various insect pests of alfalfa appeared to be an ideal control method. During 1975-1977, a test was conducted each year at the Mead Field Laboratory to evaluate new experimental insecticides against the alfalfa weevil and other pest insects of alfalfa grown for forage. A number of the new insecticides showed promise against the alfalfa weevil and the pea aphid
