Establishing a COVID-19 lemmatized word list for journalists and ESP learners
The aim of this research is two-fold; first, to explore the most frequent COVID-19 inspired words in medical news reporting contexts, and second, to classify them into different categories. This paper adopts a corpus-based approach to build a lemmatized academic word list (AWL) inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic. Factiva was used to retrieve the pandemic-related articles published in News Rx from January 1 - October 31, 2020. A total number of 18,249,093-word corpus was compiled. The corpus linguistic software program Wordsmith (WS-6) (Scott, 2012) was used to generate a word list based on the complied corpus. Subsequent to compiling, lemmatizing, and analyzing the AWL, six categories were identified, namely, acronyms and abbreviation, diseases, COVID-19, biology, medicine, and scientific disciplines, all of which are of essential use for media workers, ESP learners of journalism, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and allied health sciences. Building such a discipline-specific glossary will be of special pedagogical value for health journalists, textbook writers and curriculum designers, instructors, and ESP learners in the health sciences field. One of the major contributions of this research is establishing lemmas of a large set of AWL. This set can be utilized by news media workers, health communication specialists, and ESP learners. Lemmatization will ensure rapid dissemination of the word list and its integration in the linguistic system through derivation and other word-formation processes
Palestinian pharmacists’ knowledge of issues related to using psychotropic medications in older people: a cross-sectional study
Purpose The purpose of this study was to assess the knowledge of pharmacists practicing in Palestine of issues related to using psychotropic medications in older people. Methods The study was conducted with a cross-sectional observational design using a questionnaire. A total of 400 pharmacists responded to a 19-statement knowledge test related to the use of psychotropic medications in older people. The study was conducted from July 2016 to February 2017. The reliability and internal consistency of the study tool was assessed using the test-retest method and the Cronbach alpha. Categorical groups were compared using the chi-square test and the Spearman rank correlation. Results On the 19-statement knowledge test, the median score was 55.3% with an interquartile range of 21.9%. In a comparison of the demographic and practice-related variables of the pharmacists who scored ≥ 50% on the 19-statement knowledge test with those who scored < 50%, age, gender, and having taken a course on psychotropic medications were found to be significantly associated with performance, as shown by the chi-square test and Spearman correlation. Conclusion Pharmacists practicing in Palestine possess less than optimal knowledge of issues related to the use of psychotropic medications in older people. Continuing educational interventions and/or training might be helpful in improving pharmacists’ knowledge of issues related to using psychotropic medications in older people

Olive mill wastewater treatment using a solar reactor and reuse of the waste as liquid fertilizer
Purpose The main aim of this study was to treat olive mill wastewater (OMW) using a photo-Fenton's solar reactor;Â to investigate its potential use as liquid fertilizer and to evaluate its impact on pepper crop.Method Olive mill wastewater was collected in a tank 1000 L and supplemented with 2000 gr FeSO4.7H2o. After that, 150 ml H2O2 was added to the tank to start Fenton's reactor. The treated OMWwas collected in a container and NaOH with a concentration of 1 M was added to improve the pH of the treated OMW. Pepper seedlings were cultivated on 16 February, 2020 inside the greenhouse for a period of five months. The treated OMW was used as liquid fertilizer and compared with chemical fertilizer as control. Results The pH and electrical conductivity of treated OMW were 7.5 and 7.6 dS/m, respectively. Furthermore, the control produced the highest yield and fruit number significantly (p < 0.05) compared to the other treatments, followed by OMW treated by stabilization bond (SB-OMW100%). Also the treatments fertilized by OMW treated by solar reactor (SR-OMW50%) and stabilization bond (SB-OMW100%) produced the same plant length at the end of the growing period. Conclusion The concentrations of N, P, and K of treated OMW (0.21, 0.06, and 0.68 respectively) were quite low and supplementary fertilization was necessary to improve the nutrients value of the treated OMW. The solar reactor could be a valuable and useful tool in treatment of olive mill wastewater for agricultural purposes mainly on small scale sites
Morphometric analysis of the inferior vena cava and its clinical correlations using abdomino-pelvic computed tomography: Series from a Jordanian population
INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: This study aimed to determine the impact of DM, HTN and age on IVC dimensions as measured by CT scan relevant to guide interventions in a Jordanian population. PRESENTATION OF CASES: Two hundred patients were selected from those referred to the Radiology Department, Jordan University Hospital, Amman, Jordan for clinical evaluation. Patients were divided into three age subgroups. Age, sex, and comorbidities such as DM and HTN were identified and saved for later use. All dimensions of the IVC were measured using an abdomino-pelvic CT scanner. CLINICAL DISCUSSION: A full morphometric analysis of the IVC would provide a better understanding of the dynamicity of the IVC in relation to its blood flow. Our results revealed that the length of the IVC was significantly shorter with age (PÂ =Â 0.003). DM significantly affected the length of the IVC (PÂ =Â 0.044). Hypertension also significantly affected the length of the IVC (PÂ =Â 0.031), but it did not significantly affect the anterio-posterior or the transverse diameters of the IVC. CONCLUSION: The length of the IVC was significantly shorter with age, DM and hypertension. Morphometric measures of the IVC are of great clinical importance as they may assist in medical or surgical intervention and follow-up
FGF21 promotes thermogenic gene expression as an autocrine factor in adipocytes
The contribution of adipose-derived FGF21 to energy homeostasis is unclear. Here we show that browning of inguinal white adipose tissue (iWAT) by β-adrenergic agonists requires autocrine FGF21 signaling. Adipose-specific deletion of the FGF21 co-receptor β-Klotho renders mice unresponsive to β-adrenergic stimulation. In contrast, mice with liver-specific ablation of FGF21, which eliminates circulating FGF21, remain sensitive to β-adrenergic browning of iWAT. Concordantly, transgenic overexpression of FGF21 in adipocytes promotes browning in a β-Klotho-dependent manner without increasing circulating FGF21. Mechanistically, we show that β-adrenergic stimulation of thermogenic gene expression requires FGF21 in adipocytes to promote phosphorylation of phospholipase C-γ and mobilization of intracellular calcium. Moreover, we find that the β-adrenergic-dependent increase in circulating FGF21 occurs through an indirect mechanism in which fatty acids released by adipocyte lipolysis subsequently activate hepatic PPARα to increase FGF21 expression. These studies identify FGF21 as a cell-autonomous autocrine regulator of adipose tissue function
