    第44次南極地域観測隊ドームふじ越冬隊の8名は2003年1月19日から2004年1月23日までドームふじ観測拠点(77°19S, 39°42E, 3810m a.s.l.)において越冬観測を行った.ドームふじでの越冬は,第I期南極氷床深層掘削計画の第36,37,38次隊以来の4回目であった. 今回の越冬は気象,雪氷,医学研究等の他に初めて宙空隊員が越冬し,流星バースト通信実験やオーロラ観測を行い,各分野とも貴重な結果を得ることができた. また,今回の最大の任務は第II期同計画のための新掘削場を完成させ,越冬明けの春に航空機で内陸に到着する第45次隊の5名を迎え入れて深層掘削を開始することであった.期間中大きな怪我や事故もなく無事に越冬を完了し,新掘削場,新型ドリルも予定通りに完成し,362m深まで掘削することができた.The 44th Dome Fuji Wintering party, consisting of eight personnel, carried out observation and logistic works at Dome Fuji Station (77°19S, 39°42E, 3810m a.s.l.) from 19 January 2003 to 23 January 2004. It was the 4th wintering after the 36th, 37th and 38th Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE) parties during Deep Ice Coring Project I. Meteorological, glaciological and human physiological research were done as same as the past wintering, and observations of upper atmosphere physics were carried out for the first time. Many valuable results were achieved in each field of research. Our most important duty during wintering was to complete construction of a new ice coring site during wintering for Deep Ice Coring Project II and to start drilling with five members of the 45th summer drilling team which arrived at the inland station by airplane without using a ship from Japan for the first time in the history of JARE. There was neither a major injury nor accident during wintering. We safely completed construction of the new drilling site according to schedule and we conducted the first season\u27s deep ice core drilling of the Project II to a depth of 362m at last

    004年の「南極における医療・医学研究集会」が8月28日,国立極地研究所で開催された.主な内容は「南極の高所がヒトに与える影響」,「南極でのストレスがアミノ酸脂肪酸代謝に与える影響」,「越冬基地におけるレジオネラ菌調査」,「南極における紫外線障害とその対策」,「46次隊の医学研究計画」であった.16施設から合計22名が参加し,口頭発表10演題,ポスター発表1演題,文書発表1演題について,活発な討論が行われた.A meeting on Antarctic Medical Research was held at NIPR on August 28, 2004. Twenty two members participated in the meeting with ten oral presentations, one poster presentation and one report paper.     南極医学医療研究集会は,わが国の南極医学研究と医療問題についての研究成果を報告・討論し,次期の観測隊における医学研究に寄与することを目的として毎年行われている.2006年の本研究集会は8月26日,国立極地研究所講堂で行われた.27施設から42名が参加し18の演題報告がなされ,近年では最大規模の研究集会となった. 参加者は越冬経験医師をはじめ,共同研究を行っている大学や研究機関の研究者,関連領域の研究を行っている宇宙開発機構やスポーツ科学研究所などの研究者,南極に興味のある一般病院の臨床医など多彩であった. 2004年より昭和基地に導入されたテレビ会議システムを活用して,昭和基地の医師もリアルタイム映像で討論に参加した.また韓国,中国の越冬医師が初めて参加した.これは3カ国の極地研究所による事前の準備と連携により実現した.集会では各国の南極基地の医療状況や医学研究活動が報告され,活発な意見交換がなされた.南極医学医療研究分野におけるアジア連携の端緒となることが期待される.A workshop on Antarctic Medical Research and Medicine 2006 was held at the National Institute of Polar Research (NIPR) on 26 August, 2006. Forty two participants from 27 institutes attended. The members consist of medical doctors with Antarctic experience, human biologists, research scientists in other fields, logistic staff members of the expedition and also medical doctors interested in Antarctica. The current resident doctor at Syowa Station joined the discussion through a telecommunication system. Doctors with Antarctic experience from China and Korea also participated in the workshop. They gave presentations on their Antarctic activities, followed by an active discussion session. Eighteen presentations were given on various topics, including the International Polar Year (IPY) 2007-2008 in medical research, space medicine, telemedicine, an international comparative study of medical operations, psychological surveys, Antarctic high-altitude medicine, Legionella surveillance and nutritional studies

    第44次南極地域観測隊ドームふじ越冬隊は2003年1月19日から2004年1月25日までドームふじ観測拠点(南緯77°19′01″,東経39°42′11″; 標高3810 m)に滞在し,雪氷・気象・宙空の観測を実施する一方,新掘削場の建設作業を実施した.この建設作業は43次隊による新掘削場の外装工事を主体した建設作業を引き継ぎ,新掘削場の内装工事を主とした.本稿では深層掘削準備作業として現地にて実施した以下の作業を記述した.ケーシングパイプ引き上げ,掘削孔拡幅,ケーシングパイプ挿入,ウインチ移設(移設用スロープの造成および10 mピット内の整備),床造成,マスト起倒用10 mピットの造成および10 mピット内の整備,ドリル作業室西側の階段造作および旧掘削場の深層ウインチ跡の床張り,机の製作,マストおよび小型門型クレーンの設置,リフター設置,ウインチ稼働テスト,チップ回収機吊り下げ用ウインチの設置,深層ウインチのケーブル巻き換え,深層ドリルの組み立ておよびマスト調整,コア貯蔵用雪洞の拡幅,コア棚の設置および一般設備工事.これらの作業に要した時間は合計で593.5日・人であり,1日平均6時間の作業時間だったので3561時・人となった.また,越冬中に実施した旧掘削場での検層準備および45次ドーム航空隊を主体とした深層掘削作業についても簡潔に記述した.Eight members of the 44th Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE-44) stayed at Dome Fuji Station (77°19′01″S, 39°42′11″E; 3810 m a.s.l.; ice thickness 3028±15 m; mean air temperature -54.4°C; lowest air temperature -79.7°C) from January 19, 2003 to January 25, 2004 for glaciological, meteorological, and upper atmospheric observations, and for construction at a new ice coring site for deep ice coring. The construction was a continuation of the activities of JARE-43; JARE-44 primarily carried out interior work at the ice coring site. The following works were carried out during the overwintering period and are described in this paper: retrieval of casing pipes from the borehole, enlargement of the borehole, insertion of casing pipes into the borehole, movement of the winch system from the old to the new ice coring sites (44.5 m apart), floor construction, construction and preparation of a 10 m depth pit for the rotating mast, construction of stairs between the old and the new ice coring sites, construction of working tables, assembling the mast and the small goliath crane, setting up a lifter, testing the winch system, setting the winch for the chip collector, cable replacement for deep ice coring, assembling of a deep ice core drill, adjustment of a rotating mast, enlargement of caves for ice core storage, and general electrical work in the new ice coring site. The total working time for the above operations was 593.5 person-days. Since the average working time was 6 h/day, the total working time was 3561 person-hours. Preparations for borehole temperature measurements in a 2503 m borehole and the ice coring operation that was mainly conducted by the JARE-45 team are briefly described
