Fatigue Lifetime Prediction with the Aid of SAW NDE
The scattered radiation of elastic waves from fatigue cracks in metals is interpreted for their detection and characterizations. The studies concentrated on predicting the remaining fatigue life for single fatigue cracks above the threshold value for macrocrack propagation. Acoustic surface waves were used to interrogate the crack during cyclic fatigue. The inversion of the scattering data provided crack depth and crack length as a function of fatigue. Auxiliary experiments were conducted to study effects of crack closure. Since the closure load depends strongly upon crack depth, especially in the near-threshold regime, improved life prediction is the expected result
Crack Depth Measurements with the Aid of SAW NDE
This report presents results of measurements of crack depth with the aid of acoustic bulk and surface waves. Both simulated and real fatigue cracks were examined. Two techniques were employed, one took advantage of the very efficient mode conversion between acoustic surface waves and shear waves at the crack tip; the other technique used the diffraction of shear waves at the crack tip. Both techniques were used on a number of simulated {spark eroded) and real cracks in Al 2024. In one fatigue specimen which contained an elliptical crack 4.5 mm in length and 1.25 mm in depth, crack closure studies were carried out. The precision of crack depth determination was judged to be better than 10%
Electronic polarization in quasilinear chains
Starting with a finite -mesh version of a well-known equation by Blount,
we show how various definitions proposed for the polarization of long chains
are related. Expressions used for infinite periodic chains in the 'modern
theory of polarization' are thereby obtained along with a new single particle
formulation. Separate intracellular and intercellular contributions to the
polarization are identified and, in application to infinite chains, the
traditional sawtooth definition is found to be missing the latter. For a finite
open chain the dipole moment depends upon how the chain is terminated, but the
intracellular and intercellular polarization do not. All of these results are
illustrated through calculations with a simple H\"uckel-like model.Comment: 5 page
A participatory inquiry into cultural and religious discourses that either silence or promote gay voices
This study is an inquiry into discourses which influence gay people's lives. Foucault's ideas regarding knowledge, power, discipline, discourse and sexuality form the epistemological background enabling a social constructivist-deconstructive analysis of these concepts in relation to the problem of homosexuality. The theological origins of influential discourses form the focus of one chapter. Additional discursive fields - such as psychology, education, the military and legislature - are also investigated.
Besides the research initiator, three other participants shared their experiences of being gay in a conservative religious context. The narrative analysis spawned five themes of discourse ranging from homophobic discourses - which invite oppression into silence - through reverse-discourse, to those discourses which encourage free expression of gayness. The study seems to support a Foucauldian view that there are various influential power-relations which contest for the right to define human sexuality. Judging from the study, homosexuals do not appear to be powerless or completely silenced at all.Philosophy, Practical and Systematic TheologyMTH - SPEC PAST THERAP
Transcranial color-coded sonography in the management of patients with cervical and intracranial arterial stenosis
peer reviewedLe progrès technique en imagerie a permis le développement
