    El Chichon aerosols in the stratosphere: Analyses of lidar data and calculations of radiation budget

    Lidar observation at Fukuoka has provided over four years the data of ElChichon aerosols in the stratosphere. Analyses of the data show that an enormous amount of volcanic aerosols has continuously decreased since the beginning of 1983 with significant fluctuations. These fluctuations reveal themselves as a seasonal variation of aerosol content with a maximum in winter-spring and a minimum in summer. The vertical structure of the aerosol layer also shows the seasonal variation. Although the height of a peak around 18 km in the vertical profile of scattering ratio show littel variation, the higher second peak appears frequently from late fall and the lower third peak from late winter to late spring just as two and more tropopauses appear in these periods. The mechanism which causes the seasonal variation will be discussed in terms of the transport by the atmoshperic circulation and the removal through the tropopause gap. Radiation budget in the atmosphere was calculated taking into account the large amount of aerosols observed in the early stages of the El Chichon event. The heating rate of the atmosphere is more than 1 K in the bottom region of the stratosphere even in the nighttime. The possible effect of the volcanic aerosols on the other geophysical phenomena will be discussed using the calculated values of the heating rate

    Study on magnetic thermal seeds coated with thermal-responsive molecularly imprinted polymers

    We conceived a novel hybrid carrier of a thermal-responsive molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) and a magnetic thermal seed (MTS) that showed a heat-generating ability under an alternate current (AC) magnetic field. Compared to our previous publications, we modify both the MIP and MTS to improve the feasibility for the hybrid carrier, briefly we have to achieve the accurate size control and narrower size distribution of MTS, and higher molecular recognition/release ability of MIP. Firstly, uniformly sized particles which are expected to show a large heat-generating ability under an AC magnetic field were successfully prepared by controlling the core creation. Then, an MIP targeted for selective adsorption of pemetrexed (PMX), a well-known anti-cancer drug, was prepared using N-carbobenzoxy-L-glutamic acid as a pseudo template. Finally, the preliminary hybridization of the MTS and the MIP-equivalent polymer coating was examined by introducing vinyl groups as methacrylic acid using a ligand exchanging method

    A novel fluorescein-bisphosphonate based diagnostic tool for the detection of hydroxyapatite in both cell and tissue models

    Abstract A rapid and efficient method for the detection of hydroxyapatite (HAP) has been developed which shows superiority to existing well-established methods. This fluorescein-bisphosphonate probe is highly selective for HAP over other calcium minerals and is capable of detecting lower levels of calcification in cellular models than either hydrochloric acid-based calcium leaching assays or the Alizarin S stain. The probe has been shown to be effective in both in vitro vascular calcification models and in vitro bone calcification models. Moreover we have demonstrated binding of this probe to vascular calcification in rat aorta and to areas of microcalcification, in human vascular tissue, beyond the resolution of computed tomography in human atherosclerotic plaques. Fluorescein-BP is therefore a highly sensitive and specific imaging probe for the detection of vascular calcification, with the potential to improve not only ex vivo assessments of HAP deposition but also the detection of vascular microcalcification in humans

    Short- and long-term outcomes following laparoscopic palliative resection for patients with incurable, asymptomatic stage IV colorectal cancer: A multicenter study in Japan

    Objective: This retrospective multicenter study compared short- and long-term results between Japanese patients with asymptomatic stage IV colorectal cancer who underwent palliative laparoscopic surgery (LS) versus those who underwent conventional open surgery (OS). Methods: Among 968 patients treated for stage IV colorectal cancer from January 2006 to December 2007 in 41 surgical units that were participating in the Japan Society of Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery group, we studied 398 patients who received palliative resection of their asymptomatic primary colorectal tumor. Results: We analyzed data from patients undergoing LS (LS group, n=106) and OS (OS group, n=292). Fourteen (13.2%) LS group patients were converted to OS. Although the differences between groups for postoperative complications were not significant, the mean time to solid food intake and postoperative length of hospital stay for the LS group were significantly shorter than those for the OS group (2 vs. 3 days, p<0.0001; 13 vs. 16 days, p<0.0001, respectively). The LS group patients experienced a longer median survival time than that of the OS group (24.5 vs. 23.9 months, p=0.0357). Conclusions: Laparoscopic palliative resection (LS) offers advantages for short-term outcomes and no disadvantages for long-term outcomes. The use of laparoscopic procedures to treat asymptomatic, incurable stage IV colorectal cancer appears to be acceptable
