    Riverine sustainment 2012

Student Integrated ProjectIncludes supplementary materialThis technical report analyzed the Navy's proposed Riverine Force (RF) structure and capabilities for 2012. The Riverine Sustainment 2012 Team (RST) examined the cost and performance of systems of systems which increased RF sustainment in logistically barren environments. RF sustainment was decomposed into its functional areas of supply, repair, and force protection. The functional and physical architectures were developed in parallel and were used to construct an operational architecture for the RF. The RST used mathematical, agent-based and queuing models to analyze various supply, repair and force protection system alternatives. Extraction of modeling data revealed several key insights. Waterborne heavy lift connectors such as the LCU-2000 are vital in the re-supply of the RF when it is operating up river in a non-permissive environment. Airborne heavy lift connectors such as the MV-22 were ineffective and dominated by the waterborne variants in the same environment. Increase in manpower and facilities did appreciable add to the operational availability of the RF. Mean supply response time was the biggest factor effecting operational availability and should be kept below 24 hours to maintain operational availability rates above 80%. Current mortar defenses proposed by the RF are insufficient.N

Selection criteria for accounting or auditing positions

It has always been a major concern for companies to select talented candidates. Job applicants too have always been concerned about the selection criteria companies apply. Thus, we can see that employee selection, specifically selection criteria, is an area of interest for many people. This study aims to (a) understand the significance of various selection criteria for accounting or auditing positions, and (2) assess their relative importance. The criteria in our study are (1) academic performance, (2) working experience, (3) communication and interpersonal skills, (4) attitude towards work, and (5) extra-curricular activity (ECA) participation

Feature Space Transformation for Better Understanding Biological and Medical Classifications

Recently published gene expression profiles and proteomic mass/charge ratios are extremely high-dimensional data. Though support vector machines can well learn the inner relationship of the data for classification, the non-linear kernel functions pose an obstacle to explain the prediction reasons to non-specialists. In this paper, we study the problem of feature space transformation for easy interpretability of classification results. Each new feature is a combination of multiple original features provided that the new feature captures a large percentage of one class of data, but sharply discriminates the data in the other class. Under the description of new features, training or test data are clearly class-separable. We also discuss a more sophisticated rule-based method, called PCL, for classification. PCL provides easily explainable classification scores for us to better understand the predictions and the test data themselves. Visualization is also used to enhance the understanding of the classifier output. We use rich examples to demonstrate our main points

FOCI : Flexible Organizer for Competitive Intelligence

    No full text
This paper describes how an integrated web-based application, code-named FOCI (Flexible Organizer for Competitive Intelligence), can help the knowledge worker in the gathering, organizing, tracking, and dissemination of competitive intelligence or knowledge bases on the web. It shows how text mining techniques including a novel user-configurable clustering, trend analysis and visualization techniques can be used synergistically to address the problem of managing information gathered from the web. FOCI allows a user to define and personalize the organization of the information clusters according to their needs and preferences into portfolios. Predefined sections for organizing information in specific domains is also supported. The personalized portfolios created can be saved and subsequently tracked and shared with other users. In addition, FOCI is designed to handle multilingual documents

    Exploiting Visualization in Knowledge Discovery

    No full text
Todate visualization has not been extensively harnessed in knowledge discovery in databases (KDD). In this paper, we show that a multidimensional visualization (MDV) technique can be used synergistically with a machine learning program like C4.5 to uncover new knowledge. Used together, the two approaches span the KDD spectrum between complete automation on one hand and fully manual on the other. We introduce MDV, its implementation in a tool named WinViz, and show how WinViz supports the various tasks in KDD. Keywords: data and knowledge visualization, multidimensional visualization, interactive data exploration 1
