Semi-leptonic B decays into higher charmed resonances
We apply HQET to semi-leptonic meson decays into a variety of excited
charm states. Using three realistic meson models with fermionic light degrees
of freedom, we examine the extent that the sum of exclusive single charmed
states account for the inclusive semi-leptonic decay rate. The consistency
of form factors with the Bjorken and Voloshin sum rules is also investigated.Comment: Latex, 27 pages. A few references and errors corrected, to appear in

Two phase transitions in the fully frustrated model
The fully frustrated model on a square lattice is studied by means of
Monte Carlo simulations. A Kosterlitz-Thouless transition is found at , followed by an ordinary Ising transition at a slightly
higher temperature, . The non-Ising exponents reported by
others, are explained as a failure of finite size scaling due to the screening
length associated with the nearby Kosterlitz-Thouless transition.Comment: REVTEX file, 8 pages, 5 figures in uuencoded postscrip
The Impact of NLO-Corrections on the Determination of the $\bar{u},\bar{d} Content of Nucleons from Drell-Yan Production
The interpretation of Drell-Yan production in terms of the antiquark
densities depends on NLO corrections. Besides the NLO corrections to the
familiar annihilation , there is a
substantial contribution from the QCD Compton subprocesses and . The beam and target
dependence of the two classes of corrections is different. We discuss the
impact of this difference on the determination of the
asymmetry in the proton from the comparison of the and Drell-Yan
production.Comment: 4 pages, 1 eps-figure. To be published in Proceedings of DIS'9
From scalar to string confinement
We outline a connection between scalar quark confinement, a
phenomenologically successful concept heretofore lacking fundamental
justification, and QCD. Although scalar confinement does not follow from QCD,
there is an interesting and close relationship between them. We develop a
simple model intermediate between scalar confinement and the QCD string for
illustrative purposes. Finally, we find the bound state masses of scalar,
time-component vector, and string confinement analytically through
semi-classical quantization.Comment: ReVTeX, 9 pages, 5 figure
The anomalous threshold, confinement, and an essential singularity in the heavy-light form factor
The analytic behavior of the heavy-light meson form factor is investigated
using several relativistic examples including unconfined, weakly confined, and
strongly confined mesons. It is observed that confinement erases the anomalous
threshold singularity and also induces an essential singularity at the normal
annihilation threshold. In the weak confinement limit, the "would be" anomalous
threshold contribution is identical to that of the real singularity on its
space-like side.Comment: Latex 2.09 with epsf.sty. 24 pages of text and 8 postscript figures.

Reduction of the QCD string to a time component vector potential
We demonstrate the equivalence of the relativistic flux tube model of mesons
to a simple potential model in the regime of large radial excitation. We make
no restriction on the quark masses; either quark may have a zero or finite
mass. Our primary result shows that for fixed angular momentum and large radial
excitation, the flux tube/QCD string meson with a short-range Coulomb
interaction is described by a spinless Salpeter equation with a time component
vector potential V(r) = ar - k/r.Comment: RevTeX4, 10 pages, 3 eps figure
Burst detection and location in water distribution networks
An algorithm for the detection and location of sudden bursts in water distribution networks combining both continuous monitoring of pressure and hydraulic transient computation is presented. The approach is designed for medium and large bursts that are the result of the sudden rupture of the pipe wall or other physical element in the network and are accompanied by the transient pressure wave that propagates throughout the network. The burst-induced transient wave arrival times and magnitudes measured at two or more points are used to find the location of a burst. The wave arrival times and magnitudes are detected using the modified cumulative sum (CUSUM) change detection test. Results of validation on a real network show the potential of the proposed burst detection and location technique to be used in water distribution systems. Observations On the Potential Confinement of a Light Fermion
We consider possible dynamical models for a light fermion confined by a
potential field. With the Dirac equation only Lorentz scalar confinement yields
normalizable wavefunctions, while with the ``no pair'' variant of the Dirac
equation only Lorentz vector confinement has normal Regge behaviour.
A systematic investigation of Regge properties and phenomenological
properties is carried out, including calculations of the Isgur-Wise function.
We point out that the Isgur-Wise function provides a sensitive test of
confinement models. In particular, the slope of the IW function at zero recoil
point is found to be for the Dirac equation with scalar
confinement, and for the no pair equation with vector
confinement. Using heavy-light data alone we argue against scalar confinement.Comment: Latex (uses epsf macro), 25 pages of text, 12 postscript figures

Universal light quark mass dependence and heavy-light meson spectroscopy
Clean predictions are presented for all the spin-averaged heavy-light meson
spectroscopies. A new symmetry is identified wherein the energy eigenstates
have a universal dependence on both the light and heavy quark masses. This
universality is used in an efficient analysis of these mesons within the QCD
string/flux tube picture. Unique predictions for all the D, D_s, B, and B_s
type mesons in terms of just four measured quantities.Comment: REVTeX4, 6 pages, 9 eps figure
