A case of left atrial myxoma accompanied by peculiar symptoms is reported. A 15-year old boy had progressive congestive heart failure and three episodes of acute attacks of panctyopenia. The anemia was accompanied by helmet-shaped, broken red blood cells, erythroid hyperplasia and elevation of indirect bilirubin. The thrombocytopenia gave rise to hemorrhagic tendency of the skin and mucous membrane. The leukocytopenia was seen at the same time. The patient also had general constitutional disturbances showing generalized malaise, persistent fever, elevation of erythrocyte sedimentation rate, positive C-reactive protein, pulmonary infection and anginal attacks. Postmortem examinations revealed a left atrial myxoma and intricated pulmonary changes. There was obliterative endarteritis of the left coronary branch and pulmonary arteries. The interstitial pulmonary fibrosis was also prominent. The pancytopenia should have been induced by the mechanical damage of circulating blood cells by the left atrial myxoma. The pathological findings of the lungs were highly suggestive of pulmonary hypertension, which was assumed to be due to mitral block caused by the atrial myxoma.</p

Nitric oxide is synthesized in various tissues and plays a role in wide and diverse range of physiological process such as vasodilation at cardiovascular system, inhibition of platelet aggregation, cytotoxic effect of phagocytic cells, and so on. Remarkable progress in the studies on a biological function of nitric oxide have been made by the technical use of various inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase. Now the interest in the possibility, that the inhibitors of nitric oxide synthase may be the important drugs for the various diseases, is growing in the field of clinical invesigation of nitric oxide. In this review, the properties of the endogenous inhibitors, NG-monomethyl-L-arginine and NG, NG-dimethyl-L-arginine which are derived from the proteins methylated post-translationally, and their metabolic significance including the enzyme, dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase as a possible regulatory system of nitric oxide function in tissues

Development of the dynamic motion simulator of 3D micro-gravity with a combined passive/active suspension system

The establishment of those in-orbit operations like 'Rendez-Vous/Docking' and 'Manipulator Berthing' with the assistance of robotics or autonomous control technology, is essential for the near future space programs. In order to study the control methods, develop the flight models, and verify how the system works, we need a tool or a testbed which enables us to simulate mechanically the micro-gravity environment. There have been many attempts to develop the micro-gravity testbeds, but once the simulation goes into the docking and berthing operation that involves mechanical contacts among multi bodies, the requirement becomes critical. A group at the Tokyo Institute of Technology has proposed a method that can simulate the 3D micro-gravity producing a smooth response to the impact phenomena with relatively simple apparatus. Recently the group carried out basic experiments successfully using a prototype hardware model of the testbed. This paper will present our idea of the 3D micro-gravity simulator and report the results of our initial experiments

Inhibitory effects of glucocorticoids on prolactin release induced by thyrotropin-releasing hormone in man

Glucocorticoid effect on thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH)-induced prolactin (PRL) release was studied in female patients with collagen or autoimmune diseases. Long-term, high dose glucocorticoid therapy tended to inhibit the response of plasma PRL to TRH. A negative correlation (r=-0.40) was found between the logarithm of total dose of glucocorticoids received and the magnitude of plasma PRL response to TRH (p less than .05).</p

Wedge holography in flat space and celestial holography

In this paper, we study codimension two holography in flat spacetimes, based on the idea of the wedge holography. We propose that a region in a d+1 dimensional flat spacetime surrounded by two end of the world branes, which are given by d dimensional hyperbolic spaces, is dual to a conformal field theory (CFT) on a d-1 dimensional sphere. Similarly, we also propose that a d+1 dimensional region in the flat spacetime bounded by two d dimensional de Sitter spaces is holographically dual to a CFT on a d-1 dimensional sphere. Our calculations of the partition function, holographic entanglement entropy and two point functions, support these duality relations and imply that such CFTs are nonunitary. Finally, we glue these two dualities along null surfaces to realize a codimension two holography for a full Minkowski spacetime and discuss a possible connection to the celestial holography
