    Get PDF
The coupling of the breathing and rotational modes of the skyrmion-skyrmion system leads to a nucleon-nucleon spin-orbit interaction of short range, as well as to spin-orbit potentials for the transitions NNN(1440)NNN \to N(1440)N, NNNN(1440)NN \to NN(1440) and NNN(1440)N(1440)NN \to N(1440)N(1440). The longest range behaviour of these spin-orbit potentials is calculated in closed form.Comment: Latex, figures not include

Particle Number Fluctuations in the Microcanonical Ensemble

Particle number fluctuations are studied in the microcanonical ensemble. For the Boltzmann statistics we deduce exact analytical formulae for the microcanonical partition functions in the case of non-interacting massless neutral particles and charged particles with zero net charge. The particle number fluctuations are calculated and we find that in the microcanonical ensemble they are suppressed in comparison to the fluctuations in the canonical and grand canonical ensembles. This remains valid in the thermodynamic limit too, so that the well-known equivalence of all statistical ensembles refers to average quantities, but does not apply to fluctuations. In the thermodynamic limit we are able to calculate the particle number fluctuations in the system of massive bosons and fermions when the exact conservation laws of both the energy and charge are taken into account.Comment: REVTeX, 17 pages, 9 figures, v3: misprints a correcte

Purpose. In gear pump during it operation trapped volumes are appears. In these volumes occurs compression and cavitation of hydraulic fluid. Studying of this process is necessary to improve gear pumps. Approach. For detailed study of these processes was carried out high-speed videography of working process experimental model of a gear pump for different values of pressure at the inlet and outlet and rotational speed of gears. As a result of analysis of the materials that was obtained during experiments, it was found that in the trapped volumes formed by the teeth of the gears, there is a cavitation of fluid, and the subsequent collapse of cavitation bubbles during the opening of a trapped volumes. Findings. The study confirmed that in trapped volumes appears cavitation as it was described in many papers. Value. As a result of the study were obtained the flow pattern in the gear pump. The cavitation in the trapped volumes leads to additional ripples of flow at the outlet of gear pump.

    Lenticular galaxies with UV-rings

By using the public UV imaging data obtained by the GALEX (Galaxy Ultraviolet Explorer) for nearby galaxies, we have compiled a list of lenticular galaxies possessing ultraviolet rings - starforming regions tightly confined to particular radial distances from galactic centers. We have studied large-scale structure of these galaxies in the optical bands by using the data of the SDSS (Sloan Digital Sky Survey): we have decomposed the galactic images into large-scale disks and bulges, have measured the ring optical colours from the residual images after subtracting model disks and bulges, and have compared the sizes of the rings in the optical light and in the UV-band. The probable origin of the outer starforming ring appearances in unbarred galaxies demonstrating otherwise the regular structure and homogeneously old stellar population beyond the rings is discussed.Comment: 9 pages plus one big colour figure in the Appendix; the slightly expanded version of the paper accepted to Astronomy Letter

Stability and Representation Dependence of the Quantum Skyrmion

    Get PDF
A constructive realization of Skyrme's conjecture that an effective pion mass ``may arise as a self consistent quantal effect'' based on an ab initio quantum treatment of the Skyrme model is presented. In this quantum mechanical Skyrme model the spectrum of states with I=JI=J, which appears in the collective quantization, terminates without any infinite tower of unphysical states. The termination point depends on the model parameters and the dimension of the SU(2) representation. Representations, in which the nucleon and Δ33\Delta_{33} resonance are the only stable states, exist. The model is developed for both irreducible and reducible representations of general dimension. States with spin larger than 1/2 are shown to be deformed. The representation dependence of the baryon observables is illustrated numerically.Comment: 19 pages, Late

A Complete Redshift Survey to the Zwicky Catalog Limit in a 2-hour by 15-degree Region Around 3C 273

We compile 1113 redshifts (648 new measurements, 465 from the literature) for Zwicky catalogue galaxies in the region (-3.5deg < \delta < 8.5deg, 11.5h < \alpha < 13.5h). We include redshifts for 114 component objects in 78 Zwicky catalogue multiplets. The redshift survey in this region is 99.5% complete to the Zwicky catalogue limit, m_Zw=15.7. It is 99.9% complete to m_Zw = 15.5, the CfA Redshift Survey (CfA2) magnitude limit. The survey region is adjacent to the northern portion of CfA2, overlaps the northernmost slice of the Las Campanas Redshift Survey, includes the southern extent of the Virgo Cluster, and is roughly centered on the QSO 3C 273. As in other portions of the Zwicky catalogue, bright and faint galaxies trace the same large-scale structure.Comment: 43 pages (3 tables and 4 figures included separately); ApJS, in pres

    The Updated Zwicky Catalog (UZC)

The Zwicky Catalog of galaxies (ZC), with m_Zw<=15.5mag, has been the basis for the Center for Astrophysics (CfA) redshift surveys. To date, analyses of the ZC and redshift surveys based on it have relied on heterogeneous sets of galaxy coordinates and redshifts. Here we correct some of the inadequacies of previous catalogs by providing: (1) coordinates with <~2 arcsec errors for all of the Nuzc catalog galaxies, (2) homogeneously estimated redshifts for the majority (98%) of the data taken at the CfA (14,632 spectra), and (3) an estimate of the remaining "blunder" rate for both the CfA redshifts and for those compiled from the literature. For the reanalyzed CfA data we include a calibrated, uniformly determined error and an indication of the presence of emission lines in each spectrum. We provide redshifts for 7,257 galaxies in the CfA2 redshift survey not previously published; for another 5,625 CfA redshifts we list the remeasured or uniformly re-reduced value. Among our new measurements, Nmul are members of UZC "multiplets" associated with the original Zwicky catalog position in the coordinate range where the catalog is 98% complete. These multiplets provide new candidates for examination of tidal interactions among galaxies. All of the new redshifts correspond to UZC galaxies with properties recorded in the CfA redshift compilation known as ZCAT. About 1,000 of our new measurements were motivated either by inadequate signal-to-noise in the original spectrum or by an ambiguous identification of the galaxy associated with a ZCAT redshift. The redshift catalog we include here is ~96% complete to m_Zw<=15.5, and ~98% complete (12,925 galaxies out of a total of 13,150) for the RA(1950) ranges [20h--4h] and [8h--17h] and DEC(1950) range [-2.5d--50d]. Objective. The aim of this study was (1) to examine the leukocyte mtDNA copy number (CN) in unmedicated (SZ (m−)) and medicated (SZ (m+)) male patients with paranoid schizophrenia (SZ) in comparison with the healthy male controls (HC) and (2) to compare the leukocyte mtDNA CN with the content of an oxidation marker 8-oxodG in lymphocytes of the SZ (m−) patients. Methods. We evaluated leukocyte mtDNA CN of 110 subjects with SZ in comparison with 60 male HC by the method qPCR (ratio mtDNA/nDNA (gene B2M) was detected). SZ patients were divided into two subgroups. The patients of the subgroups SZ (m+) (N=55) were treated with standard antipsychotic medications in the hospital. The patients of the subgroup SZ (m−) (N=55) were not treated before venous blood was sampled. To evaluate oxidative DNA damage, we quantified the levels of 8-oxodG in lymphocytes (flow cytometry) of SZ (m−) patients (N=55) and HC (N=30). Results. The leukocyte mtDNA CN showed no significant difference in SZ (m+) patients and HC. The mtDNA CN in the unmedicated subgroup SZ (m−) was significantly higher than that in the SZ (m+) subgroup or in HC group. The level of 8-oxodG in the subgroup SZ (m−) was significantly higher than that in HC group. Conclusion. The leukocytes of the unmedicated SZ male patients with acute psychosis contain more mtDNA than the leukocytes of the male SZ patients treated with antipsychotic medications or the healthy controls. MtDNA content positively correlates with the level of 8-oxodG in the unmedicated SZ patients
