    Adaptive Light Control System

    Get PDF
An adaptive traffic light system for crossroads is to be developed with the control being the data obtained through fixed cameras attached to the light system. The control itself is to be adaptive as there is no need for collecting data during the time when there is no traffic at all. Thus the problem is to collect data adaptively and control the light system accordingly. The idea, of course, is not to have people wait for unnecessary amount of time along the way, while there is no traffic across roads. Though looks rather reasonable, a very good adaptive strategy and an accompanying algorithm need to be developed. The study group is asked for such an algorithm

A Psycho-Geographic Analysis of Eateries in Ogbomoso, Nigeria

Against the background of incessant proliferation of eateries in our urban centres, the study analyses the psycho-geography of eateries in Ogbomoso North Local Government, Nigeria. The study appraises the physical attributes (including the presence and state of facilities), users perception and imageability of the eateries. An empirical measurement was done by administering a questionnaire to 320 respondents across selected eateries from parks nodes, CBD, Institutions and other activity centres. Multi-stage purposive sampling procedure was used. Major activity centres were selected. A centre for each activity centre was determined on the map of the area. All eateries within 200m radius from the centre were sampled. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used. Factor analysis was used to re-summarize the variables describing the physical attributes of eateries on the one hand and the user’s perception on the other. Canonical model was used to explain the causal factors of imageability of the eateries. The study observed a high relationship between the physical attribute of the eateries and both the performance of the eateries and the imageability of the immediate environment. The study thus recommends the imperatives for a careful consideration to planning for such uses like eateries in the broader land use planning

    Capsule Endoscopy in Celiac Disease

    Get PDF
Capsule endoscopy (CE) has been increasingly used for diagnosing disease of the small bowel. It is an attractive technique for assessing celiac disease (CD) because it is noninvasive and provides a close and magnified view of the mucosa of the entire small bowel. The aim of this paper is to update the current data on the use of CE for diagnosing villous atrophy and complications of CD

Assessment of the Qualitative Adequacy of Newly Constructed Public Housing in Ogun State, Nigeria

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to present research assessing the level of qualitative adequacy of newly constructed public housing in urban centres in Ogun State, Nigeria. Design/methodology/ approach – The study followed a quantitative research strategy. A survey of 517 housing units constructed through four different strategies and selected based on quota of their existence in nine public housing estates was conducted with a questionnaire as the key data collection instrument. A five-point Likert scale was used in measuring the level of qualitative adequacy of four key housing sub-components. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics. Findings – Residents found the overall housing to be inadequate; they indicated that housing unit attributes were the most adequate and thus contributed most, while neighbourhood facilities were the least inadequate and contributed the least to qualitative housing adequacy. Research limitations/implications – The sample population comprised mainly house heads in public housing constructed between 2003 and 2009 therefore, the findings may not be considered to be applicable to all the public housing in the study area. However, the findings can form the basis for judging the performance of public housing in the current democratic dispensation in the study area. Practical implications – The findings imply that giving adequate attention to the provision of infrastructural facilities and maintenance of existing ones can enhance the qualitative adequacy of public housing. Originality/value – This paper is a pioneering effort at evaluating the qualitative adequacy of most recently constructed public housing in the study area

Parametric Modelling of Impact of Unemployment on Economic Growth in Nigeria

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between unemployment figures in Nigeria and gross domestic product using curve fitting regression model. The following models of regression analysis were examined to determine the most suitable one to the data collected: linear, quadratic, cubic, exponential, inverse and logarithmic. Our findings revealed that the pattern of relationship between gross domestic product and unemployment is significant in all the models considered. This implies that there is significant relationship (negative or positive) between unemployment and gross domestic prodution (GDP) in the country. Also, the best model that fits the data in terms of the relationship between the two variables is the linear model because the quadratic variable is not significant in the quadratic model. The order of the next models are logarithmic, inverse and exponential models; the cubic variable and the quadratic variable are not also significant in the cubic model. Keywords: Unemployment, Domestic, linear, inverse, logarithmic, exponentia

Multicriteria sustainability evaluation of transport networks for selected European countries

    Get PDF
As an essential economic activity, transportation has complex interactions with the environment and society. Since the concept of sustainable development has become one of the top priorities for nations, there has been a growing interest in evaluating the performance of transport systems with respect to sustainability issues. The main purpose of this study is to introduce a decision making framework to assess the sustainability of the transport networks in a multidimensional setting and a technique to identify non-compromise alternatives. We also propose an elucidation technique to identify according to which criteria a system needs to be improved and how much improvement is required to attain a certain level of sustainability. The proposed methods are applied to a set of selected European countries within a case study

Quantum efficiency enhancement in nanocrystals using nonradiative energy transfer with optimized donor-acceptor ratio for hybrid LEDs

Cataloged from PDF version of article. The quantum efficiency enhancement in nanocrystal solids is critically important for their efficient use as luminophors on color-conversion light emitting diodes (LEDs). For this purpose, we investigate energy gradient mixture of nanocrystal solids for recycling their trapped excitons by varying their donor-acceptor nanocrystal ratios and study the resulting quantum efficiency enhancement as a function of the donor-acceptor ratio in the solid film for hybrid LEDs. We achieve a maximum quantum efficiency enhancement of 17% in these nanocrystal solids when the donor-acceptor ratio is 1:1, demonstrating their highly modified time-resolved photoluminescence decays to reveal the kinetics of strong energy transfer between them

INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES (ICTs) USAGE AND HOUSEHOLD FOOD SECURITY STATUS OF MAIZE CROP FARMERS IN ONDO STATE, NIGERIA: IMPLICATION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT.

The poor performance of agricultural sector as a result of insufficient information has lead to food availability, access and utilization problems at the household and national levels. However, farming households have not maximally explored the full potential of ICT for accessing information related to food security. This study therefore, assessed ICT usage and household food security status of Maize crop farmers in Ondo State, Nigeria. Multi-stage sampling technique was employed in selecting 212 maize farmers who were household heads. Structured interview schedule was used as data collection instrument. Descriptive statistics (frequency counts, percentages, Mean) and inferential statistics (binary logit regression) were used for data analysis. The finding revealed that cell phone (92.5%), radio (86.3%) and television (67.9%) were the most available ICT tools for accessing information on food security dimensions. More than half (52.4%) of the respondents were food insecure in the study area. Mean while, the estimates of Binary logit regression analysis showed that household size, membership of social organization, farm size, cell phone usage and perception towards contribution of ICT usage were found to have significant effect on household food security status. The study therefore recommended that extension institutions should concentrate on the identified ICT tools especially cell phones in disseminating relevant and timely information to farming households for sustainable food security.
