    Joint space width of the tibiofemoral and of the patellofemoral joint in chronic knee pain with or without radiographic osteoarthritis: a 2-year follow-up

    AbstractObjectives: To assess the interval change of the minimal joint space width (MJS) in radiographs of the tibiofemoral (TF) joint and of the patellofemoral (PF) joint with a 2-year follow-up in middle-aged people with longstanding knee pain with or without radiographic osteoarthritis (OA) and to study the precision of the MJS measurements.Design: In the format of a prospective study of early OA the signal knee in 55 people, 28 men and 27 women (aged 41–57 years, median 50), with chronic knee pain at inclusion was examined with a 2-year interval (median 25 months, range 21–30). The MJS of the TF joint was measured using a flexed PA view in weightbearing and the MJS of the PF joint using an axial view in standing.Results: The MJS of the TF joint decreased medially by 0.056±0.44mm (n.s.) and increased laterally by 0.080±0.51mm (n.s.) during the time of observation. In knees with an MJS medially that was less or the same as compared with the lateral compartment, the MJS decreased by 0.14±0.38mm (p=0.038) and in a subgroup of these knees, without osteophytes, the MJS decreased by 0.14±0.27mm (p=0.018). The MJS of the PF joint decreased by 0.019mm (n.s.) during the time of observation. The coefficient of variation for intra- and interobserver MJS measurements of the TF joint was 1.0 and 1.1% medially and 2.3 and 2.7% laterally, and for measurement error 6.9% medially and 4.8% laterally, respectively. The coefficient of variation for intra- and interobserver MJS measurements of the PF joint was 8.1 and 5.8% medially and 7.5 and 10.1% laterally and for the measurement error it was 8.1% medially and 8.5% laterally, respectively.Conclusions: A statistically significant reduction of the MJS was only demonstrated in the medial compartment of the TF joint in those individuals who had an MJS in this compartment which was less or the same as compared with the lateral compartment as well as in a subgroup of these knees without osteophytes. The radiographic examinations and the MJS measurements were reproducible

    Heavy metals in reindeer and their forage plants

    An attempt was made to assess the level of heavy metal transfer from forage plants to reindeer (Rangifer tarandus L.) in an area in northern Lapland affected from dust from an open pit copper mine. Botanical analyses of rumen contents from reindeer provided information about the main plant species in the diet. Representative plant material was collected from sample plots within an 8 km radius from the central part of the mine and from a reference area situated about 200 km upwind of the mining site. The following plant species were analysed: Bryoria jremontii, Br. juscescens, Cladina rangiferina, Equisetum fluviatile, Descbampsiaflexuosa, Eriopborum vaginatum, Salix glauca, Salix pbylicifolia, Betula nana, and Vaccini-um myrtillus. The greatest difference between metal concentrations in the plants collected from dust contaminated area and from the reference area was found in lichens. Copper is the main metallic component of the ore and was found in higher concentrations in lichens coming from the area around the mine than in lichens from the reference area. Smaller differences were found in vascular plants. Dust particles, remaining on outer surfaces after snow smelt contributed to a limited extent to the metal contents. Species—specific accumulation of metals was observed in some plants. The uptake of lead and cadmium in some vascular plants was somewhat higher in the reference area compared with plants growing in the perifery of the mining center, probably due to the metal concentrations in the bedrock. Organ material (liver and kidney) was collected from reindeer in both areas. No noticable effect on metal concentrations in the liver of the reindeer were found. Although the lead, cadmium and copper concentrations were higher in the organs collected from animals in the reference area than in those from the mining area, the levels were still below the concentrations regarded as harmful for the animals from toxicological point of view. The material collected during this study would also lend itself to research into the trace element nutrition of the reindeer

    An embedded boundary method for the wave equation with discontinuous coefficients

    Abstract A second order accurate embedded boundary method for the two-dimensional wave equation with discontinuous wave propagation speed is described. The wave equation is discretized on a Cartesian grid with constant grid size and the interface (across which the wave speed is discontinuous) is allowed to intersect the mesh in an arbitrary fashion. By using ghost points on either side of the interface, previous embedded boundary techniques for the Neumann and Dirichlet problems are generalized to satisfy the jump conditions across the interface to second order accuracy. The resulting discretization of the jump conditions has the desirable property that each ghost point can be updated independently of all other ghost points, resulting in a fully explicit time-integration method. Numerical examples are given where the method is used to study electro-magnetic scattering of a plane wave by a dielectric cylinder. The numerical solutions are evaluated against the analytical solution due to Mie, and point-wise second order accuracy is confirmed

    Lattice Artefacts In The Non-Abelian Debye Screening Mass In One Loop Order

    We compute the electric screening mass in lattice QCD with Wilson fermions at finite temperature and chemical potential to one-loop order, and show that lattice artefacts arising from a finite lattice spacing result in an enhancement of the screening mass as compared to the continuum. We discuss the magnitude of this enhancement as a function of the temperature and chemical potential for lattices with different number of lattice sites in the temporal direction that can be implemented in lattice simulations.
