    Z-extremization and F-theorem in Chern-Simons matter theories

The three dimensional exact R symmetry of N=2 SCFTs extremizes the partition function localized on a three sphere. Here we verify this statement at weak coupling. We give a detailed analysis for two classes of models. The first one is an SU(N)_k gauge theory at large k with both fundamental and adjoint matter fields, while the second is a flavored version of the ABJ theory, where the CS levels are large but they do not necessarily sum up to zero. We study in both cases superpotential deformations and compute the R charges at different fixed points. When these fixed points are connected by an RG flow we explicitly verify that the free energy decreases at the endpoints of the flow between the fixed points, corroborating the conjecture of an F-theorem in three dimensions.Comment: 28 pages, 3 figures, JHEP.cls, minor corrections, references adde

    Relating U(N)xU(N) to SU(N)xSU(N) Chern-Simons Membrane theories

By integrating out the U(1)_B gauge field, we show that the U(n)xU(n) ABJM theory at level k is equivalent to a Z_k identification of the (SU(n)xSU(n))/Z_n Chern-Simons theory, but only when n and k are coprime. As a consequence, the k=1 ABJM model for two M2-branes in R^8 can be identified with the N=8 (SU(2)xSU(2))/Z_2 theory. We also conjecture that the U(2)xU(2) ABJM model at k=2 is equivalent to the N=8 SU(2)xSU(2)-theory.Comment: 16 pages, Latex; v2: references added; v3: Clarifications adde

Operator Counting for N=2 Chern-Simons Gauge Theories with Chiral-like Matter Fields

The localization formula of Chern-Simons quiver gauge theory on S3S^3 nicely reproduces the geometric data such as volume of Sasaki-Einstein manifolds in the large-NN limit, at least for vector-like models. The validity of chiral-like models is not established yet, due to technical problems in both analytic and numerical approaches. Recently Gulotta, Herzog and Pufu suggested that the counting of chiral operators can be used to find the eigenvalue distribution of quiver matrix models. In this paper we apply this method to some vector-like or chiral-like quiver theories, including the triangular quivers with generic Chern-Simons levels which are dual to in-homogeneous Sasaki-Einstein manifolds Yp,k(CP2)Y^{p,k}(\mathbb{CP}^2). The result is consistent with AdS/CFT and the volume formula. We discuss the implication of our analysis.Comment: 23 pages; v2. revised version; v3. corrected typos and clarified argument

Operator Counting and Eigenvalue Distributions for 3D Supersymmetric Gauge Theories

We give further support for our conjecture relating eigenvalue distributions of the Kapustin-Willett-Yaakov matrix model in the large N limit to numbers of operators in the chiral ring of the corresponding supersymmetric three-dimensional gauge theory. We show that the relation holds for non-critical R-charges and for examples with {\mathcal N}=2 instead of {\mathcal N}=3 supersymmetry where the bifundamental matter fields are nonchiral. We prove that, for non-critical R-charges, the conjecture is equivalent to a relation between the free energy of the gauge theory on a three sphere and the volume of a Sasaki manifold that is part of the moduli space of the gauge theory. We also investigate the consequences of our conjecture for chiral theories where the matrix model is not well understood.Comment: 27 pages + appendices, 5 figure

    M-theory and Seven-Dimensional Inhomogeneous Sasaki-Einstein Manifolds

Seven-dimensional inhomogeneous Sasaki-Einstein manifolds Yp,k(KE4)Y^{p,k}(KE_4) present a challenging example of AdS/CFT correspondence. At present, their field theory duals for KE4=CP2KE_4=\mathbb{CP}^2 base are proposed only within a restricted range 3p/2≤k≤2p3p/2\le k \le 2p as N=2{\cal N}=2 quiver Chern-Simons-matter theories with SU(N)×SU(N)×SU(N)SU(N)\times SU(N)\times SU(N) gauge group, nine bifundamental chiral multiplets interacting through a cubic superpotential. To further elucidate this correspondence, we use particle approximation both at classical and quantum level. We setup a concrete AdS/CFT mapping of conserved quantities using geodesic motions, and turn to solutions of scalar Laplace equation in Yp,kY^{p,k}. The eigenmodes also provide an interesting subset of Kaluza-Klein spectrum for D=11D=11 supergravity in AdS4×Yp,k{\rm AdS}_4\times Y^{p,k}, and are dual to protected operators written in terms of matter multiplets in the dual conformal field theory.Comment: v2 refs added. 19 pages 1 figur

New Gauged Linear Sigma Models for 8D HyperKahler Manifolds and Calabi-Yau Crystals

We propose two kinds of gauged linear sigma models whose moduli spaces are real eight-dimensional hyperKahler and Calabi-Yau manifolds, respectively. Here, hyperKahler manifolds have sp(2) holonomy in general and are dual to Type IIB (p,q)5-brane configurations. On the other hand, Calabi-Yau fourfolds are toric varieties expressed as quotient spaces. Our model involving fourfolds is different from the usual one which is directly related to a symplectic quotient procedure. Remarkable features in newly-found three-dimensional Chern-Simons-matter theories appear here as well, such as dynamical Fayet-Iliopoulos parameters, one dualized photon and its residual discrete gauge symmetry.Comment: 20 pages, 1 figure; v2: minor changes and references added; v3: statements improved, newer than JHEP versio

Baryonic symmetries and M5 branes in the AdS_4/CFT_3 correspondence

We study U(1) symmetries dual to Betti multiplets in the AdS_4/CFT_3 correspondence for M2 branes at Calabi-Yau four-fold singularities. Analysis of the boundary conditions for vector fields in AdS_4 allows for a choice where wrapped M5 brane states carrying non-zero charge under such symmetries can be considered. We begin by focusing on isolated toric singularities without vanishing six-cycles, and study in detail the cone over Q^{111}. The boundary conditions considered are dual to a CFT where the gauge group is U(1)^2 x SU(N)^4. We find agreement between the spectrum of gauge-invariant baryonic-type operators in this theory and wrapped M5 brane states. Moreover, the physics of vacua in which these symmetries are spontaneously broken precisely matches a dual gravity analysis involving resolutions of the singularity, where we are able to match condensates of the baryonic operators, Goldstone bosons and global strings. We also argue more generally that theories where the resolutions have six-cycles are expected to receive non-perturbative corrections from M5 brane instantons. We give a general formula relating the instanton action to normalizable harmonic two-forms, and compute it explicitly for the Q^{222} example. The holographic interpretation of such instantons is currently unclear.Comment: 92 pages, 10 figure

Emerging Non-Anomalous Baryonic Symmetries in the AdS_5/CFT_4 Correspondence

We study the breaking of baryonic symmetries in the AdS_5/CFT_4 correspondence for D3 branes at Calabi-Yau three-fold singularities. This leads, for particular VEVs, to the emergence of non-anomalous baryonic symmetries during the renormalization group flow. We claim that these VEVs correspond to critical values of the B-field moduli in the dual supergravity backgrounds. We study in detail the C^3/Z_3 orbifold, the cone over F_0 and the C^3/Z_5 orbifold. For the first two examples, we study the dual supergravity backgrounds that correspond to the breaking of the emerging baryonic symmetries and identify the expected Goldstone bosons and global strings in the infra-red. In doing so we confirm the claim that the emerging symmetries are indeed non-anomalous baryonic symmetries.Comment: 65 pages, 15 figures;v2: minor changes, published versio

The Large N Limit of Toric Chern-Simons Matter Theories and Their Duals

We compute the large N limit of the localized three dimensional free energy of various field theories with known proposed AdS duals. We show that vector-like theories agree with the expected supergravity results, and with the conjectured F-theorem. We also check that the large N free energy is preserved by the three dimensional Seiberg duality for general classes of vector like theories. Then we analyze the behavior of the free energy of chiral-like theories by applying a new proposal. The proposal is based on the restoration of a discrete symmetry on the free energy before the extremization. We apply this procedure at strong coupling in some examples and we discuss the results. We conclude the paper by proposing an alternative geometrical expression for the free energy.Comment: 40 pages, 7 figures, using jheppub.sty, references adde

Effect of rearing system on body traits and fillet quality of meagre (Argyrosomus regius, Asso 1801) chilled for a short time

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to evaluate qualitative traits of meagre (Argyrosomus regius) from two different rearing systems (land-based tank filled with geothermal water vs offshore sea cage) and after short-term storage at chilling temperature (1, 2, or 3 days). Fish originated from the same batch were fed the same diet. Morpho-biometric traits, L*, a*, and b* colour parameters, texture, free water, proximate composition, total lipids, fatty acids, iron, and selenium contents were analyzed in the fillets. Most parameters were affected by rearing system. Compared to tank-reared fish, caged fish were shorter, poorer in visceral fat, and had higher incidence in cavity content and liver, lower incidence in gonads and head. Caged fish also had softer fillets in the epaxial site, which showed a higher tendency towards greenish colour. Caged fish also showed higher lipid content but lower Fe and Se content. Tank-reared fish fillets were more abundant in PUFAn-3, mainly due to DHA (18.54 vs 12.95%; P<0.001) and consequently showed the best healthiness indexes. Minimal changes, mostly involving colour and texture, were detected during the first three days of refrigerated storage. During storage, no significant modification of the parameters investigated could be ascribed to the rearing system
